....yeah, it's a total waste of money, but my son and I had a hoot. He got the kids package and shot a Ruger .22 LR and a modified AR-15 with an Aimpoint sight, I shot an M-4, M-249 and M-9. The staff was professional and our range master just ETS'd from the 82nd (11B and LRS). The atmosphere was just as I expected, collegial and congenial with folks from all sorts of backgrounds just there to have a great time.

Highly recommend.

If y'all had fun, I guess it's ok - but you can do this stuff in a lot of other locations for next to nothing.

I live within minutes of the Orlando Theme parks and don't go. . . because . .

"it's a total waste of money".

"it's a total waste of money".I miss that part of Tampa. Being able to drive to Busch Gardens with my daughter on Sat morning 1-2 times per month (we had annual passes) and leaving to have lunch with the lazy woman who is my wife by 1300. And also driving to Disney World for the weekend, every quarter. And driving over to Cape Canaveral twice in a year (and watching a shuttle launch).

Living in FL certainly has it's good points....

I have been meaning to go down and take my better half to it. I have heard that they have a range large enough in Vegas and would like to have her fire the M-60. Any of you know if that is possible and what it may cost me?

I don't see an M60 on there, but an M249 is a lot of fun too. And it's an indoor range so it's not like you can get much out of shooting a machine gun anyway.

There might be a place around Vegas that will let you shoot a machine gun outdoors but I don't know of any.

When I was in HS, we lived less that an hour away (Dunedin. Go Falcons!!) and BG was a great place to go, especially in the off season when there weren't any tourists around. We'd skip school & go over during the week and there wouldn't be any lines.

Good times.

What about the range in Boulder City where they had the media shoot for Shot?

If they're d-bags because they tell tall tales that's one thing, however, if they're d-bags because some of them have criminal records then I'm concerned considering how much Class 3 is in the store.

Thanks.

Probably means their attitude. I went there a few years back. While the gun store commando stuff was minimal, it was still there.

...yeah, they all dress in commando black and some of them are heavily tatted up, but I also found the staff courteous and generally interested in helping the shooters/clients.

It'd be fun to shoot all that stuff again, but I'd rather a range that had MK19s and GAU17s, and other stuff that came after my time. Maybe a SMAW. If anyone finds one drop me a PM.

"duchebags", huh? I hardly know where to start with your characterization of myself and my friends/ former co-workers so maybe we better do this by the numbers....

1) It's spelled "douche bags". And since you live there, you should know that vegas is capitalized, ie. "Vegas". Acquaint yourself with spell check.

2) You didn't know it, but you are talking not only about me, but about friends of mine. Another member on this board (Iraqgunz) and I have a mutual acquaintance who used to work there. I used to work there. May again some day. And a very large percentage of the staff who work there, or have worked there, are ex-military and/or prior LE of some description. One guy, a good friend of mine, has 3 tours in Iraq starting in 2003 and is currently in Afghanistan doing PSD. I'm in Iraq doing PSD. One of the senior guys there is a retired Rochester, New York SWAT cop who once worked in a country called Rhodesia, which you likely only know by it's current name. And that's only scratching the surface of who works or has worked there.

3) The owners are EXTREMELY supportive of the troops. Anyone who works there that gets called up for a year has their job waiting for them when they get back, even if they are fully staffed. Room is made. Doesn't sound like a place run by douche bags to me.

4)Yeah, I looked at your bio. You're Mr. HSLD, so everyone else is a duchebag. Excuse me, "douche bag". I'm not as impressed with you as you doubtless are with yourself. But then I don't work an OGA contract (why would you even put that out there?) as you say you do, so my Light 11B "humping a ruck and a '16 a decade before you were born" self is obviously not as cool as you are.

And lastly:

5) Although I'm not a BTDT as defined by SOCNET, and am therefor a guest here, I like how you come on here with 4 posts and use your 5th to call out a bunch of people who you should now realize you don't know as douche bags and in the same breath try and plug your buddy for people's business.

Sounds to me like the kind of thing a real "duchebag" would do.

Everyone who works there has passed a criminal background check, for exactly the reason you name. A lot of the staff don't really need access to the store to have Class 3, they have their own.

they all dress in commando black

Well, we just call it black.....

The owner decides how he wants his staff to dress. The shirts with the store logo are issued. You have to buy your own pants. They have to be black. Wasn't that way when I first worked there but as usual, one or two people came to work wearing stuff that was deemed less than completely professional, so that changed. It has the upside of making staff immediately identifiable as such on a range where everyone is wearing ear pro and customers are often handling firearms for the first time. And the first time is an UZI or some such. You don't need anyone wondering who that guy is that's giving them direction.

some of them are heavily tatted up

The guy who jumps to mind at that (full sleeves) is a Marine. S.S. IIRC.

I also found the staff courteous and generally interested in helping the shooters/clients.

That would be correct.

I think he should post it. Then we can all see who he thinks your money would be better spent with. Informed people may have a different opinion, and even be able to tell you why.

Bear in mind that there is some jealousy with other people in that town who try and make money renting machine guns to tourists. The Gun Store originated the concept, and no one else is even as remotely successful at it. But they wish they were.... ;)

your post..

BOB, thank you for your post. Very well said. I go to Vegas once or twice a year, and this next trip, I will stop in and check it out.

Sounds like a great place to go and check out after blowing a few hundreds to the slots...

Be safe!

I'll have to check out The Gun Store the next time I'm in Vegas. I thought about it when I was there in 2008, but I didn't have enough time. It might be a waste of money, but it will be a fun waste of money.

I stopped at the Gun Shop last time I was in Vegas. I chose to burn a couple mags from a Thompson SMG. I always wanted to see how one fired. Once I got used to the strong muzzle climb, it was a lot of fun.

The staff was professional and polite. Next time I'm there I'll try the MP-40...

I had the opportunity to shoot a Thompson last month for the first time. Found it to be one of the smoothest weapons I've ever shot; right up there with the MP5K.

Not to nitpick, guys, but it's The Gun STORE, not shop.

The Gun Store
2900 East Tropicana

It's about 3.5 miles east of the strip, the bus will drop you right there and pick you up going back. All day ticket is $5 last time I checked, cheaper than a cab if you care about that, also you can be waiting for one a while sometimes depending on what day it is and what time it is.

Here's the website, add www of course.

Nah, I did the exact same thing when I first worked there.

Me: (answering phone) "Hello, The Gun Shop, may I help you?"
Manager giving me the stinkeye, conversation ends...
Me: "What?"
Him: "It's The Gun STORE, not The Gun Shop".
Me: "Oh. Yeah..."

I agree with everything you said. They have been in the business a long time and they were the originators of having a gun store/ range that catered to tourists.

I got my Nevada/Utah CCW there as well back in 2006. The staff was always helpful and friendly even when being overrun by asian tourists.

I remember meeting the owner a few years back. He was a bit too serious, but he had a business to run.

Characterizing them as douchebags is just down right uncalled for. I can only guess it has something to do with that other clown having an interest somewhere else.
