I read an article indicating that the Commandant of the Marine Corps authorized a PMOS for MARSOC yesterday which effectively ended the five year rotation for MARSOC personnel. That is great news for the unit. Now they can finally maintain the personnel with the training. Good day for Corps.

Well done by the the Marine Corps to get a much needed MOS identifier for their SOF guys in such a short period of time. Look how long it took SF.
Cheers!

I believe it's a primary for enlisted and a secondary for officers.

Sir,
0372, Critical Skills Operator is a primary enlisted MOS.
There is a new NMOS (necessary MOS) for Officers, 0307 Expeditionary Ground Reconnaissance Officer, which is not directly related to MARSOC. If you are a Team Leader, Company Commander, etc. and do not have the requisite Reconnaissance experience you will not receive the NMOS as the requisites relates to Reconnaissance schooling/experience and not SOF schooling and experience. How all that is going to play out is anyone's guess. The Marine SOF enlisted career track is established, Officers is still a work in progress. The NMOS is outlined in MARADMIN 650/11. MARSOC Officer's with a recon background received it, those who have no recon background did not. Based on the MARADMIN it seems as though the NMOS functions to screen for command in a Reconnaissance Battalion or Force Reconnaissance Company. YMMV.

If you are a Team Leader....A quick question, based on my ignorance of things today -- when you mention TL, are you referring to a MARSOC TL or a FR TL? As in, are there now FR TLs that are officers?

Team Leader in MARSOC is an Officer Billet for the Officer that commands a Marine Special Operations Team. Team Chief is the Senior Enlisted.
I've always thought that the title should be Team Commander vs. Team Leader. Words having meaning and all that.
Team Leader in Reconnaissance Units is the same as it always has been, another reason why I think the title should be Team Commander. (for an MSOT)

(for an MSOT)Right on, thanks -- I had a moment of nostalgic heart pain, but then I had to remember that before I joined, there had been officer TLs in reconnaissance patrols. So my pained emotion was unnecessary, although I do like to see from your post that raccoon patrols are apparently still led (today) by NCOs....

For what it's worth, officers led patrols in Vietnam. After the war there was a move to put the officers in more of a liaison/COC role.

For SF, we call the 0-3 a "team leader" but the official title is "detachment commander." MARSOC probably needs to make a change to that title. I was pretty involved with MARSOC in the past, and privvy to a lot of MARSOC's growing pains. I suspect that the "team leader" title was copied from SF, in ignorance of the actual title for an 0-3 in command of a detachment. The job (MARSOC v. SF) is the exact same position, i.e., an 0-3 commanding a tactical-level element.

Team leader was chosen on purpose. I was on one of the MarSoc committees early on. Some other unit/MOS used TL for the officer billet and the path of least resistance brought about TL being the title that officers could hold when leading a team. The issue of TL being a title used for enlisted in FR was brought up and shot down. It had nothing to do with any other org outside the Corps. Like other titles and T/O it will probably change as HQMC and MarSoc comtinue to refine the direction the org is going.

The "Team" is now the key word in all of this. Marine Special Operation's Team. It
makes sense the the big guy be the Team Leader.

In all things MARSOC, I defer to Petey. Not only is he the real deal, he also saved my life, which I try to remind him of as often as I can.
I'm the lone SF guy in the room defending MARSOC often, since most SF guys think MARSOC is trying to steal "our mission," which I find somewhat puzzling...but I've probably got Stockholm Syndrome when it comes to MARSOC.

After I did a tour in AF with MARSOC, I started pushing for regular exchange tours between SF and MARSOC. Unfortunately I got zero traction with my SF chain of command. I still think it would be very beneficial to both organizations, but, no one else in SF seems to think so.

I know on the original Steering Committee that was envisioned. Then again, the T/O and mission focus has evolved to what it is now. Based on that it would make even more sense.
Does SWC still have a Marine or 2 or has that gone away as well?

I don't know. I see Marines in the HQ building regularly, but they don't wear gold wings/bubbles, so I don't know if they are FR/MARSOC. Whenever I meet with TDY guys that I know are FR/MARSOC, they wear their awards.

Whenever I meet with TDY guys that I know are FR/MARSOC, they wear their awards. There might be a couple of things driving this, in addition to the possibility that the guys you are seeing are not FR/MARSOC.
Due to the current OP cycle, some of the guys might not be going to certain insert schools. I don't know how prevalent this is today, but I've talked to a number of guys who've remarked that the deployment schedule simply prevents them from going to certain training.
The other thing is that the guys you met in the building -- on those days -- aren't into the badge thing. When I worked at SWC (granted, awhile back), I didn't wear my stuff about 75% of the time -- especially in cammies....

SOTB,
That wouldn't impact the dudes who may be walking around SWC. The school issue is only impacting those who join and end up in the company on the short end of the pre deployment cycle, not those who have some time in the unit.
Thanks

I may need you on that, I may push for it again.
