Gentleman,
Can anyone pass on to me any info about this place? Im looking at living conditions, messes, gym, and other necessities of this place. I will be deploying to this area in a few months and would like a "heads up" before heading in.
Cheers.

. . . and would like a "heads up" before heading in.
Cheers.
Given the choice of words, I couldn't pass up this opportunity . . .
In 1221, Mongols had captured Herat, left a small contingent to keep an eye on things, and the rest of the Horde continued west and south to continue their conquest of Asia.
Shortly afterward, the locals rose up and killed the Mongol garrison.
When word of the uprising reached Ghengis Khan, he returned with the main army, laid siege, and killed almost every living thing in Herat.
After the slaughter the inhabitants were decapitated, and their heads were stacked in huge piles, where the skulls remained for years as a warning to passers-by.
Sorry I don't have more current information, but "heads up" and "Herat" was too good to pass up.

sprbloggins,
youre being a bit vague..
herat province is a big place.. with several FOB's.. and several non military installations where you will find military and contractor personnel working..
are you talking about the city of Herat?
are you talking about Camp Stone (one of the larger FOB's)?
are you talking about ANTC?
are you talking about the NATO camp near the airfield (i think the Italians are still running it)?
etc..etc..
All of those places are EXTREMELY different in terms of quality of life, amenities, etc..

My last experience with Herat was in late 08, so I'm a bit dated...
I had two OD Hardig cases get stolen I mean borrowed from the flightline by a local ODA, despite its having SECRET stickers all over the two cases...
One had a Dell 1950, Dell 2950, a Dell KVM, and an APC 3000 power supply. The other had a pair of Dell MD1000s, each loaded with 15 ea. 500 gig drives.
I'm sure that the ODAs 18E saw that gear and blurted out something along the lines of "OMG... that's the BEST gaming server EVER... *grabs it*
Took a month for me to recover the damn thing.
BTW, I'd say off the cuff that western AFG is pretty much a shit hole, but that's just my own personal opinion. I never lived there.
