View Full Version : Heading to Hong Kong and Beijing
I am heading out to China tomorrow for two weeks (Hong Kong & Beijing), and I wanted to know if I should or should not bring my laptop. I would like to to stay in touch with family and complete some work. Some say it is ok, others say don't. Any SOCNETers been, how recently, and what is your professional opinion?
Thanks,
-JAFO

Take it if you don't have banking, taxes and other assorted data on it, anywhere. Don't log on to on line banking while you're there.
Enjoy the visit.

I agree with SB..
if you are just wanting to send emails, etc.. you should be fine..
but I would make sure it has no personal information on the computer... no banking info, taxes, etc.. and I definately wouldnt do any online banking, online bill payments, etc..
I would just operate under the assumption that everything you do is being monitored..
If its just naughty emails to the wife... and cool pics of the forbidden city to the kids... no worries..
if youre planning on perusing corporate financials.. or filing your personal income taxes... I would say youre a no-go at this station..
Thanks guys, See you on the return.
JAFO out.

Where are tiy staying in Beijing? I have been staying at the Marriot N.E.
We are staying at the Westin Financial. Everyone of the guys in my group are wanting to have suits made. I'd rather drink the local beer.

JAFO, try out Franks Pub in the LIDO Districted, not bad, its a English Pub
Will do. We are here til next Wednesday. Just got back from the Silk Alley Market. They really do make you work for a descent price. I was sent away for being "too cheap". It has been business visits all day (Lenovo and Erricson). Tomorrow is a group sight seeing trip (Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City). Some of my classmates went to Ho Hai after the Silk Market. I'm trying to convince others to go to Hooters Beijing...just for the nostalgia. Monday is more business visits and Tuesday is a free day to do whatever.

lol.. they definately know how to work you at the silk market...
but that said.. if you do your homework.. and put those MBA negotiation skills to work.. you can come out with a great deal...
Im still wearing my knock off north face 3 layer coat that i bought there in 2005 for less than $35...
I think I've still got my fakie prada leather gloves around here too somewhere (that I paid $10 for) :)

This is my last week here in Beijing, sure will miss this place. Silk Market yes haggling capital of Beijing. Not sure if you have made out to the Pearl Market yet, but it is the same as Silk Market but smaller. I will say though that across the street from the Pearl Market is the Temple of Heaven, not a bad place to visit, just make sure you wear comftable shoes. Also you have not yet, try the subway, especially at the interchanges around line 1 and 10, get ready to do some shoving and cramming, the subway gets crazy full. Have fun.
We hit the Pearl Market last night and needed some "home-time", so we went to Hard Rock Beijing for some well deserved American grub.
Today we had a business visit with Worley Parsons and a cultural visit to Chateau Changyu winery. The Chinese have an interesting take on vino, that's for sure. Sorry, that's the California wine snob coming out there.
I have intentionally avoided the subway experience. This was a holiday weekend in China, and about half the country decided to visit Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City on Saturday. Needless to say, I have had my share of the crowds for this trip. It seems like we have spent more time on the bus and in Beijing traffic than we have at our destinations.

I have an office at Worley Parsons, fourth floor. I am here working on a PHA for a Saudi venture. Look me up if you come back to the WP office. Look for A. Garcia. aka Blue.
That is exactly where we were today. I'm surprised you didn't see us (the group of about 35 UGA students in suits touring the 4th floor).
