I only ask because I had seen the name on a list of honor. Robert Fay was the name of the first SEAL to die in Vietnam, I think he was attached to SOG.

The only "Bob Fay" on the list is the MACV SOG guy killed in Vietnam.

Daredevil, if im not mistaken it was a SEAL named PO Billy Machen who died first in VN, trident86 can correct me if im mistaken.
Machen walking on point spotted an ambush and initiated it before patrol was caught in it. He died during the firefight that followed, another Petty Officer by the name Moscone carried Machen s body over 500 yards through heavy swampland until they got extracted. Machen was awarded a posthumous Silver Star.

Gentlemen,
We are all correct in a sense. Billy Machen was the first SEAL COMBAT fatality. The first SEAL to actually die in Vietnam was Robert Fay. His death was not combat related.
Just at a side note, I happen to know the officer in charge of Machen's platoon the day he was killed. He works for the Navy as a contractor now.
