this is NOT my part of the forum, as an enlisted Marine. However, I have been reading up on the NSW community, and I was curious to know what the Officer washout rate is? The officers SEEM to wash out less than the enlisted men, but that's only my impression...I believe someone said in another post that there is a 70% washout rate, 30% pin rate. Is this also true of the officers?

I apologize if this has already been asked, but I did not find it directly asked anywhere. If it has, point me to it and I'll read it over immediately.

Thanks for your time

You should do some research into the SEAL officer application process. It may help you in regard to this question.

Its one of my goals to be a SOF officer, and I have been looking at NSW as one of my options, so I actually have been looking into that. I spoke just yesterday to a Navy Officer Recruiter. The process of selecting potential SEAL Officers is very difficult; you must bring to the table your A-game on everything. Your scores on the SEAL PST must be perfect, you should to bring around a 3.5 GPA (or better) from college, letters of recommendation, preferably from SEALs or military officers (the recruiter recommended my C.O.) who know you well and can clearly state what they believe you can offer the SEAL community.

However, my question was more directed at how many of these stellar candidates fail BUD/S. Obviously not all make it, despite the extremely selective process. I understand that not all officers who go to BUD/S are OCS sailors. The Naval Academy sends some every year.

Thanks for your time

If my memory serves me correctly, the officer wash out rate ranges between about 25-50%. The competition for the few slots available is higher so naturally the graduation rate is higher.

Brian 1/75 and d322

thanks guys. I spent some time today talking to the recruiter again, and he told me to get through my degree then come back. I'm going to be in country within a few months, hope to get some of my degree done there but I am doubtful I will have time for more than a few classes.

This is correct. The "O" washout rate is a little less than the "E" because the competition is so fierce for the few slots (3-8 per class) the lesser qualified candidates don't get a chance to even start. Statistically Naval Academy grads have a higher graduation rate over ROTC or OCS. (I was ROTC, prior Marine).

I think of the original 12 screened only two from that group made it through the process. and I think a couple after.
