what are some of the best war movies of vietnam and +? i got full metal jacket and hamburger hill. Any suggestions?

I hesitate to recommend "Platoon", Oliver Stone production, because it mostly features uncommon actions of the war. When I first saw this movie, I felt that it was disrespectfull of the honorable service of many Americans. I still believe it gives a false impression of Vietnam Veterans. I served two tours in III Corps as an VN Advisor and participated in several combined operations with elements of the 1st Div., 11th Arcav, 1st Cav., and 25th Div. The tuff combat conditions were accurate, but the drugs, rape, and murder certainly was just movie crap. Just keep that in mind!

Tracy,
Just rented "Siege of Firebase Gloria" a couple of nights ago. It gets my nomination for best 'Nam movie. R. Lee Ermey is a freakin genius, and a VietVet to boot! The one-liners in that movie are incredible.

So it really hurt us to see their

One of the more obscure Vietnam movies out there is "The Boys in Company C", which could be called "Full Metal Jacket Light."

It follows agroup of Marines from basic to Vietnam, narrated by the guy who wants to be a writer AND it features R. Lee Ermey as their DI, but it was made almost 10 years before FMJ. I think it was a joint venture between Canon, who did the Delta Force movies, and Golden Harvest, an HK chop-socky studio.

I wouldn't recommend buying it (probably out of print) but it's got its moments. Might be worth renting.

Anybody ever see the Eye of the Eagle series? I almost rented em, but decided to get Chopper Chicks in Zombietown instead. ;-)

My vote goes to Odd Angry Shot. Aussie SAS in Vietnam. That "wanking machine" kills me.

I've got to add some thumbs up for "The Odd Angry Shot", and recommend "The Final Option" (about the Brit. SAS).

I know we're looking for Vietnam and later, but I have to take a step back and add "Cross of Iron", "Saving Private Ryan", and "Submarine X-1".

Stripes was good...... but 1941 offers a more accurate portrayal of what could have happened had Slim Pickens not ate that compass from the Japanese sub. Also, I'm sure all Californians slept better knowing "Wild Bill" Kelso was patroling their skies.

Kelly's Heroes, by far...

Best part of the flick was the homage to Clint's spaghetti westerns, when Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, Clint Eastwood and Don Rickles do the "Gunfight at the OK Corral" stand-off against the Tiger Tank.

Thats easy.

Any of the new generation B rated military movies that are on display at any of your local video rental places.

US SEALS,

US SEALS 2

Rangers

Rogue Force

etc.

They don't have a plot worht shit, The acting is utter crap, they completely disgrace the real military forces that they are supposed to be about, the script is shit, the actors are either no-names, or has-beens, and they have crappy music in them to boot.

My only serious problem with those types of movies is that Tim Abell acts in many of them, and I don't understand how he can disgrace hisformer Batt brothers like that.

Which Delta Force movies are you talking about. The ones with Chuck Norris or the crap(ier) ones? Anything with Chuck Norris has about a 50% chance of being damn entertaining, which I would say his Delta Force movies were. Accurate, well I don't know about that.

Pauly Shore's "In the Army now"...

Sgt. Bilko was pretty funny...

Two of the best "seriouse" military flicks:

Full Metal Jacket & Platoon

Best actor to play an an officer was Burt Reynolds in Canon Ball Run (1?2?3?) when he played a General on an OPSEC mission with Dom Delauise as his driver (Pvt.) (They even had Gommer with them for a while... :D

Slim Pickens riding the H-bomb like a rodeo bull

Not sure of how many of you saw this piece of crap

http://images.rottentomatoes.com/images/movie/coverv/74/118774.jpg

The film claims: An elite corp of military experts travel to a democratic nation whose government is in danger of being overthrown by a band of mercenaries. Fantastic special effects add much to this exciting feature

A online review- "folks, this movie hurt. It hurt me bad. I mean hurt like having your girlfriend screw your best in front of you and then beat the shit out of you in front of everyone you know bad."

and for more insight-
"Megaforce defeats the enemy with completely ridiculous means. I'm talking every superhero/James Bond trick in the book. Smoke coming out of their assault motorcycles, laser weapons, even FUCKING FLYING MOTORCYCLES. You have to see this to understand. I'm dazed. I am writing this minutes after viewing it. It hurts...lord, please stop the hurting! "

and finally -

"No synopsis written by man can describe the badness of this movie. You'll really have to experience it for yourself. I really can't describe the sheer pain this film will induce!"

Band of Brothers was great. I was only able to get the first 5 parts taped, and can't wait for the DVD box set.

You people need to put that one into context. It was the 80's when that came out. NOTHING was real in the 80's. Hell, If the Army had those gold zip up body suits wtih the flash dance head bands as the uniform today, think of how much different the military would be.....

Modern: BHD Rocks, best modern war flick so far, though 3 kings is enjoyable aside from the zoom in iron sights =-) I saw behind enemy lines which is a good action flick and a shitty war movie, I'm surprised no one mentioned Rules Of Engagement, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Also Heartbreak Ridge is always a good one to watch (damned digital cable and me having all this reading to do =-) Major Payne is one of my favorite comedies, hell, i still do the robot =-) Also when he retaliates with chemical weapons against their cupcake attack is a classic scene. Also I just watched In The Army Now the other day while eating some wendys (R.I.P. Dave Thomas, you have given us Bacon Mushroom Melt and we will never forget you for it =-D ) and it's got some great scenes, David Allen Grier and Andy Dick (a nice guy) are hillarious in it.

Vietnam/Korea: I love M.A.S.H. one of the greatest football games ever, aside from all sorts of hilarity otherwise, not to mentinon I love the show as well. 84 Charlie Mopic is a great flick and they actually tried to be realistic (and a great plot) The Manchurian Candidate is always interesting (side note, I ended up being the defacto uniform advisor for an off broadway modernized version because I happened to be in the A/N shop they were getting the uniforms at (Kaufmans on 42nd Street between 8th and 9th Avenues, across from the Port Authority Bus Terminal coolest surplus shop in the city)) I always enjoyed Hamburger Hill and FMJ as well, not too big on Platoon or Apocalypse Now. And yes I like Stripes as well as Animal House A PLEDGE PIN ON YOUR UNIFORM!?!?!

WW2- SPR and BoB for starters, Kelly's Heroes is also a favorite as is Stalag 17 (and Hogan's Heroes =-) Patton is a classic, as are so many others... Go For Broke and Hell To Eternity are two of my favorites. The Big Red One is a good one too. (there's one I watched recently that I can't remember the name of that was really good) Dirty Dozen is great, and the second isn't bad (nothing like switching armbands) We actually watched A Midnight Clear in sophomore english in my high school, and I loved it (I plan on naming one of my kids William Knott and another Wyohming Knott =-) Also what's the movie where the guy impersonates the British General? This has turned into an excellent thread...

OK...

Pre-WWI: "Zulu": One company of British Infantry against 4000 Zulus...9(?) Victoria Crosses in one battle...

"Waterloo": Jeez...whata mess that was...

WWI: "Paths of Glory" w/Kirk Douglas: Honest army officer fights the higher ups when he sees his men being sacrificed for nothing

"Galipoli": Frontal attacks on entrenched HMGs really isn't fun...

WWII: "The Big Red One" w/Lee Marvin: Really underrated...from D-Day to Germany with one squad...

Korea: Haven't really seen many Korean war flicks out there...something on the Marines at Chosin or the Canadians/Aussies at Kapyong might be a good show...

Vietnam: "FMJ": R. Lee Emery is God.
"The Odd Angry Shot": Hours of boredom, puntucted by moments of sheer terror...the scene when Bryan Brown in the hospital is great...

Modern: Nothing yet....

Could not agree more. And along those lines, has anyone seen him in Saving Silverman ? Now, I respect the guy a whole lot, however, his character being gay and then kissing Jack Black in the end? It was kind of funny, but also kind of a "what the..." moment. Guess the guy has some serious balls to be doing that on screen. It was funny as all hell though.

Guess that I will jump in on this one.......

I have always liked Crimson Tide with Gene Hackman -- the scene where the Captain is addressing the crew before they man the sub always made me smile------

"What is the name of this ship, Mr. Cobb?"

"Alabama, sir!"

Another one of my favorite movies (as a kid) was a Hackman project by the name of Uncommon Valor. It had Randle "Tex" Cobb and Patrick Swayze as supporting cast members, and was about a retired Colonel going back to Nam to look for his MIA son. Ahh, to be young and stupid once again.

Can we include Braveheart as a military movie?

I didn't have a good opinion of Semper Fidelis, some movie about Marine Bootcamp. It looked so much like Marine propaganda to me ;) Funny thing is that a Canadian station was playing it.

Tour of Duty was a good show for this reason: It showed younger Americans that not all Vets Were F#cked up, not every one was a baby killer and that Protesters were just as much part of the Problem as GI's (in terms of conflicts state side) If they made characters that you liked then you would feel there pain when they were hurt or abused. You have to remember that this was a time when All they taught us in school about Vietnam was that we lossed and it was our (Americas) fault. So If it changed even one persons mind or forced people to rethink what they percieved about the war then the show did its Job and the rest of Cheezy 80's action jazz didnt matter. Just my .02.

I was raised by vets so maybe my opinion at the time was biased.
I think there should be more movies about Vietnam or more TV Documentaries so that everybody knows what Our Fathers (my Generations fathers anyway) went through and how they werent all like we see in Platoon. There were Plenty of guys who just went and did thier Job if for nothing else then thier buddy.

I know.....Im preaching to the choir

It hasn't been released yet, but I suspect that "We Were Soldiers Once," which will be released in March 2002, will be pretty compelling.

It is based on the Battle in the Ia Drang Valley and is the first time the USA mobilized and deployed USCAV Air Mobile. Also, if I am not mistaken, it was the first time the US engaged battalion sized NVA. In retrospect, the NVA fought so fiercely in large measure because the USA was very close to a huge NVA supply depot/camp.

Speaking of R. Lee Emery...he had a great little part in Steven Seagull's ON DEADLY GROUND...the one where he played an ex-EOD, ex-CIA, ex-SEAL hippie Native American firefighter.

Emery is talking about Seagal's experience and says something like "You could drop that guy off in the Antarctic in his bikini underwear without his toothbrush, and tomorrow afternoon he's showing up at your poolside with a million-dollar smile and a fistfull of pesos!" That was great.

Another good line he had was "I want you guys to protect this entrance like it was your sister's cherry!"

Come to think of it those were the only 2 good parts in the entire movie. Fuck Steven Seagal.

I have a whole lot of fav military/war movies, so I better just list the top 10:

1. BHD...Not very original for 1st place, but anybody who watches that movie and still doesn't respect our men/women in uniform need to be kicked outta the country!

2. Full Metal Jacket...This would have been 1st until BHD came along, great movie....too bad its not about the Army

3. The Delta Force....it was cheezy, but Chuck and Lee made great D-boys back when nobody was supposed to know about them. However the sequels sucked.

4. Heartbreak Ridge...I'm mean, nasty, and tired. I eat barbed wire and piss naplam; and I can put a round thru a flea's ass at 200 yards.....'nuff said.

5. Stripes/Major Payne...These movies are only good for their comic relief, but a world without laughter is chaos.

6. Kelley's Heros/Three Kings...I put these two together due to they have similar plots: Soldiers go Behind Enemy Lines to jack a load of gold, shooting up lots of baddies along the way...Ah, if only Oddball was in Three Kings:cool:

7. We Were Soldiers...This is only #7 because the movie has not come out yet. When it does, expect it to move up to #3 or maybe even #2 on my list.

8. The Green Berets...this in my opinion, is not only a good war movie, but the Duke's best role! To relate a personal connection: My father was neighbors with SSG Barry Sadler for a short time at Ft. Bragg. SSG Sadler wrote the "Ballad of the Green Beret" heard in the movie.

9. The Patriot/Pearl Harbor...I rate these movies as excellent due to to patriotic pride that these movies filled me with watching them...I saw Pearl Harbor opening day and by the end, there was not a dry eye in the house (It could have done w/o the Titanic-like love story)

10. Band of Brothers...while not a movie, this has to be one of the best made-for-tv productions ever made. When I think of the decision I made to become a cadet, I think of two things: 9/11 and this miniseries.

Runners up: Conspiracy, Saving Pvt. Ryan, Gettysburg, Glory, To Hell and Back, The Lost Battalion

I really loved the movies "Zulu" and "Great Escape". Zulu was the epic battle of Roarks drift in the transvaal province (South Africa) where a small group of English Infantry and engineers was attacked by a vastly superior Zulu warrior army. 11 Victoria Crosses were won in the 36 hour battle before the Zulus withdrew. Even though beaten they gave the Zulu equivalent of a BZ to their enemy. AHHHH when war still had rules.

Really enjoy watching the Great Escape but thats just the SERE guy in me

I really hate "army of one" movies like rambo, Norris movies, and anything that makes your average dedicated soldier look larger than life.......Read Top Gun here.

P.S. if you get a chance to see it theres an old movie with Sean Connery in it about an English military prison in Africa. Its called "The Hill"......really worth a look

I thought Blackhawk down was an excellent movie, though my favorite is still Full Metal Jacket.

Don't care much for Military movies that sacrifice realism for big hollywood explosions, or unreal scenarios. I think I'm one of the few Marines that dosen't care much for "Heartbreak Ridge" for that very reason!

Did we forget RANGERS?

Saw it at Blockbuster and had to pick it up. OMFG! 1/3 of the movie are scenes right out of Navy Seals. Not that that was a good movie, but still, let's at least get some original footage for a new movie.

If you want a good laugh, and feel like cussing your ass off at a TV, then I highly recommend renting RANGERS, but first watch Navy Seals first. You'll see some real similarities.

Personally, if you give a flying rat's ass, my favorite movies, for no particular reason or in any order are:

Garden of Stone
Ronin
Green Berets (classic)
*Final Option (SAS)
Platoon
The Finest Hour (HBO movie)
A Bridge Too Far
The Big Red One
Heartbreak Ridge (fucking funny)
All 3 SEAL Documentaries on Discovery Channel (great for lines)

From Discovery SEAL Documentary:
I may never go to war, or do anything cool, again.

*They don't produce this movie anymore, but I highly recommend watching it if you can find it at Blockbuster. Sometimes it's in the Action section, sometimes in the Drama section. And few stores have it. You can't buy it anywhere except on e-Bay.

Any comments on the Final Option, circa 1979?

I would say Band of Brothers is my number one.

Major Payne is damn funny, pretty good too. Das Boot and The Beast were also pretty good.

Saving Private Ryan and When Trumpets Fade would have been better if they were not fictional. When Trumpets Fade would have been better had it paid tribute to those who served and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the Europe Theater or during WWII.

We were soldiers was good, but the baronet charge was very stupid, and I presume it never took place. Got to love the quote from Sgt. Maj. Basil Plumley, ¡§Sir, Custer was a pussy.¡¨ and ¡§If any of you son-of-bitch try to call me ¡¥grandpa¡¦, I¡¦ll kill ya.¡¨

Don¡¦t flame me for this, but I think Black Hawk Down would have been better if they had a better scriptwriter, better cast, better director, better producer, and better studio. It is a lot better then the usual Hollywood stuff, but I feel that they failed the servicemen from various SOF. I do not remember them paying tribute during the press releases or the awards.

Most of the rest from Hollywood pretty much stinks. The worst is probably G.I. Jane. The second worst is Rangerette? But most others trail very close behind.

(I do not know if the movie¡¦s name is called Rangerette, nor do I care. It is about a platoon of female Rangers in Korea. Ya, a platoon of females passing RIP and earning the scroll? Please, give me a break. Besides, the actresses in it are not even hot.)

I'm contemplating renting it and "losing" it just to get my own copy. It's not in production any longer and it certainlay ain't coming out on DVD any time soon.

See "The Deerhunter"

Also "La Beau Travail" (warning: is about the French Foreign Legion). A newer movie I liked alot about military hardships.

I don't know!? I've seen just about all the big Hollywood war movies but after you have done some time in uniform actors pretending to be soldiers starts to become so damn obvious and it ruins the movies for me. I'm serious. I can't sit through a war movie now without nitpicking sh** like: the fake southern accent;
rank/insignia totally FUBAR (see "Platoon Leader"); baby-faced actors who were raised on and still have not given up "the silver spoon" portraying hardcore soldiers (I'm f@#king serious- some of these guys have been taking too many ballet lessons); thinking to myself how these same baby-faces would crumple under the circumstances that they portray (so realistically???); a host of others...

Hollywood is so blatantly hypocritical about the subject of War it makes me laugh. Anti-war films then pro-War then..WHATEVER! :o

Hi fellas,
I've been a longtime visitor to socnet. So, when I discovered this thread I couldn't resist. There have been some really great suggestions...but a couple of glaring omissions!

I don't think anyone's mentioned WHERE EAGLES DARE w. Clint Eastwood and directed by the same guy who did KELLY'S HEROS. It's the ultimate cool-soldier-guys-on-a-desperate-mission flik. Sortof a standard bearer for this genre.

ICE STATION ZEBRA w. Ernest Borgnine, Jim Brown, and THE PRISONER himself, Patrick McGoohan, directed by John Sturges, of THE GREAT ESCAPE fame.

KHARTOUM w. Chuck Heston (Chuck Heston for chrissakes!!!) as a British general sent to the Sudan to quell a fundamentalist uprising. Good spectacle and action. Has parallels w. what's going on today.

A few forgotten titles from the forgotten war: PORK CHOP HILL and THE STEEL HELMET. The first directed by th man who did the original ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT, the latter directed by Sam Fuller, director of THE BIG RED ONE (and MERRIL'S MARAUDERS), and a veteran of the 1st ID in WW2.

A couple o' good paratrooper flicks: OBJECTIVE, BURMA! w. Errol Flynn, and THE LOST COMMAND w. Anthony Quinn as a French para colonel who leads his batt from Dien Bien Phu to Algeria.

THE ANDERSON PLATOON an Acadmy Award-winning documentary (1965) by a French filmmaker and Indochina vet who follows said platoon of the 1st Cav in Vietnam. The more serious of you should check this guy's body of work (what's available, that is), he is one of the few directors who knows, undestands, respects, and appreciates the profession of arms and men in uniform. His name is Pierre Schoendoeffer.

Oh yeah...does anyone remember THE BOYS IN COMPANY C?

There is a part in the book that relates someone coming up to Spears and saying something to the effect like I was in combat with you and you saved my ass. His reply, which war - WWII, Korea, Vietnam? What a fucking stud!

Someone mentioned The Lost Battalion about WWI, that is a good movie, too.

Best war movie of all time was a mini series...Band of Brothers the fact that their all true stories and about European Operations during WWII and just how great each one was makes Band of Brothers stands out..I think my fav episode was 3 I felt REALLY sorry for pvt. Blythe though..the guy got hit in the neck and didn't die from his wounds until 1948 thas alot of f**king suffering. following Band of Brothers is of course Black Hawk Down. that movie kinda hits close to home cause three of the aircrew that died that day are alumni of my school Embry Riddle. then as follows:
3. Saving Private Ryan
4. Glory
5. A Bridge Too Far
6. We Were Soldiers
7. Tour of Duty(the old tv series)
7. Stalingrad
8. When Trumpets Fade
9. Patton
10. Full Metal Jacket (Gotta love the DI :-))

Who thought these pieces of shit up:
GI Jane (omg...a chick as a SEAL...LOL)
Rangers(I think I made it through about 5 mins of this one)

Anyone know the release date for the Band of Brothers DVD collection?

Xdeth
22 June 2002, 15:42
Movies, I love 'em, got a huge DVD collection. Some of my favs are Apocolypse Now, Patton, and of course Full metal Jacket. For a good laugh Major Payne, Top Gun, Dr Strangelove. For a good cry Heartbreak Ridge or The Rock for their crap portrayals of Marines.
