I heard a rumor that they reduced airborne school down to just two weeks. Can anyone verify this?

Are there any other recent changes?

I am going in late March and want to know what the real story is. The Benning school page for the basic airborne course has not changed or been updated.

Thanks for the info.

I cant imagine they could reduce it down to only 2 weeks. The first 2 weeks are crammed down your throat with Ground and Tower weeks. The 3rd week with the 5 qual jumps and graduation rounds it out. I just dont think they would try Ground and Tower weeks into 1 week. I went in '93 so if you hear anything different, please pass it along.

You might be Airborne if... you yell "GO, GO , GO" at the car in front of you when the stop light turns Green. :D

It's possible to "shorten" jump school to two weeks. The 82nd (and 5th SFG) used to run Basic Abn at Bragg. They eliminated the 250(?) tower, had class on Saturday, and a longer training day.

I always thought jump school was about 3 days of instruction crammed into 3 weeks! If you are pitiful shape then perhaps the course would challenge you physically, but for most guys it seemed that the real challenge was running so slow without cramping up.

There are plenty of past instances where MTT's trained people and had them start jumping in as little as 3-4 days. As one post already mentioned, there were also some formal schools that pushed folks through in less than the current 3 weeks. S/F

We had the thanksgiving holiday break in the middle of mine so in actuality the school was only 10 training days. We skipped the 250ft tower. The black hat's said: "It was a waste of time anyway, just jump out of the damn bird..." I heard this rumor last fall as well but have seen no truth to it actually happening.

The hardest thing about jump school was putting up with all the Pvt.’s strait from Sand Hill that were there. (85% of the class, at least!) They got their first taste of a little freedom and you think they had lost their F-N minds.

My class was "small" with about 380 starting the course. We were on the 34' towers by Thursday morning of ground week. Our weather was perfect for most of training so we could've done it in two weeks.

Treat it the way other schools are with a normal training day on the weekends, cut the 250' towers, and two weeks wouldn't be a problem unless weather played a role.

They did that at Devens with 10th SFG, as a matter of a fact my dad put our familys good friend though the school. Although I don't remember how long it lasted, I was just a little boy way back then.

I agree that Jump School could and should be shortened, but I can't believe the Cadre would shorten the school. We were put through the same drills all day, every day. Getting rid of the towers and incorporating weeks 1 & 2 would be a great idea.

I am a September 1979 graduate of the 36th Airborne Brigade, Texas Army National Guard Basic Airborne Course. Direct from AIT we went back to home companies/battalions in Texas, and took ground training at Camp Mabry (in Austin) the first MUTA-5 weekend (Friday 1900 through Sunday 1700). If I remember right, second MUTA-5 weekend was finishing ground and 34-foot tower training. Third weekend was pre-jump on Friday night, board C-130s at Bergstrom Air Base, and three jumps on Saturday, two jumps Sunday (including night/CE graduation jump) on Camp Swift. Total training days = 7 1/2.

At one time, a Reserve Component course was taught (early-mid '80s) with no weekend breaks. It was a two week course.

Guys, when I was at MEPS two weeks ago my counselor told me that Basic Jump School will be two weeks in length. Will this contribute to more injuries or will it make jump school easier?

My bet is that your counselor is blowing smoke because they don't know any better.
