Hey, I have two questions about re-enlistment.
1) If a person finishs their enlistment in the national guard or reserve, and choose to enlist in the active army, do they start over as a private?
2) If a person finishes their enlistment in the Army/Navy/Marines/Air Force, and choose to enlist somewhere else, do they start over again?
I ask because I hear a whole lot about guys having to reenlist to the Navy or whatever to get in units.

It Depends, and I am not speaking from recent experience rather the early eighties. You could enlist from the guard or reserve into active duty and retain your rank if you elected to go active in the same MOS or basic field you are currently serving in the Reserve or NG. I think the rules for Reserve are better, since a healthy portion of the force is reservist. If you were NG you spent a period of evaluation, seems to me it was 2-3 years, then a board would determine what grade to retain you in. In my case I went to SF so I did not maintain my rank. I was a PFC, not due to my previous experience, simply because of my college time. To make a long story short I rocketed through the ranks and was pinning on E-6 about the same time other guys were being reevaluated to the rank
of E-5. In some cases it was payback time.
I hope that answers your question.

Spotlight, thanks, since I would go through basic with the guard or reserve, would I have to reattend basic/AIT?

No, I did not attend any other courses, but went straight to Ft Bragg. I would have had to retake basic if I had not attended my previous two ATs (Annual Training)
