Caught the tail end of the story this morning. Didn't hear anything about Seals securing the ship. Although they did show a group of what looked to be Seals running down the side of the ship. Maybe Tom or someone can find an article and post it on the forum.

Didn't see the vid myself, but on NBC Nightly News, my parents saw video of SEALs choppering in and taking it while it was under way.

10 SEALs from ST 2. No shots fired, no casualties. Smooth as it goes.

Did the tanker try to run the blockade? I heard they were co-operative. Why were SEALS neccessary. I did one cvbg and 2 marg cruises, and usually the shoes did boardings where there was no resistance. We did not want to end up doing a lot of waste of time law enforcement stuff.

It's not in the job description for the shoes to motor over in their launch and board an uncooperative fast moving vessel, as I understand the crew only cooperated once the guys roped in.

So whats the option when the Navy needs to board and no SEAL's or Marines are around?
Give em the 5"?

I went ahead and put together an article on the boarding at: http://www.specialoperations.com/Focus/News/Volgoneft.htm
Added a photo I found on a Navy site as well that was taken during the boarding.

enforcing the embargo during the gulf war, i was on "toto station". seal team "x" came aboard at port said and did ALL boardings of iraqi merchant ships. we came in on the third helo with our cti's. these nice young men are trained to stop ships. don't try this at home.
