I know that SEALs can request Ranger school, but can Boat guys? I know their primary mission isn't land-based DA, but I was curious if it was an option for them to apply to those types of schools - being they're still in the special warfare arena.
Thanks for your time,
Tosh

Actually a guy from SBU-20 just went to Ranger school not too long ago...don't know if he graduated though.
I was also told by their command master chief that they do.
I would hope every able bodied man would at least try, I believe it would make you a better all round operator.

Let me ask this. Why in the hell would a "Boat Guy" want to get feet dry and go to Ranger School?
If a Boat Guy is on the ground he is in alot of trouble. We fight from our boats and thats what we do the best. Now dont get me wrong, a Boat Guy needs to know how to navigate if he is on the ground, but he isn't going to assualt a target from the ground. He is going to be hiding out and making his way to a pick up point.
Granted there is some very good information that a Boat guy could pick up from Ranger School, ie leadership skills, field skills and how to survive but as a whole we fight from our boats. We are some of the best Boat guys in the world and we take great pride in that.
Remember "Never get off the Boat"

Now dont get me wrong, I became a boat guy way before SWCC school was even thought of. But doesnt SWCC school have a land phase ? I seem to rememeber seeing students at La Posta doing Land Nav exercises.
Now dont forget, getting you boat shot out from under you is still a high danger, Hell the Sri Lankans are learning that lesson now, and they have MK-V's just like we do.
BUT Ranger school ? Man, the Teams sent guys there when I was on active duty, and all they did was operate while eating one MRE a day. It was a great weight loss program. Also, the instructors, being what they were, constantly tryed to get our guys hurt. Another one of those rivalry things that folks get too involved with. Who's the toughest and all that crap.
If SWCC school has a land phase, then I dont see the nead.

Yes SWCC has a land phase it's a week long actually it's alittle over a week you get cover and concealment training and land nav then you go into the field up at la posta for a wekk and you do land nav during the day and night and they have a little op 4 for the night ops so the quicker and quieter you get to your lay up site the sooner you get to sleep.
