Get this one. I recently went to purchase a firearm in Fayettenamn only to find out that in order to obtain a weapons permit from Cumberland county, I have to get a form from the Provost Marshall that my CO has to sign giving me Permission to purchase a pistol. I don't know about anyone else, but I think that a 28 yr old Spec Ops. NCO has enough responsibility to determine whether or not I can defend my residence. Without an officer making the determination for me. I thought that was the whole point behind getting a permit in the first place. I tell you I'm P.O'd. I'm gonna follow the rules yada yada... What do you think??

1. It was like that 20 years ago. Never changed, never will.

2. Cumberland County Sheriff Dept doesn't KNOW you. So they rely on the PMO to let them know if you're not another nut-case looking for a weapon. This is an extra measure of safety for the SD; because most military personnel are transient. They could be giving a permit to some schmuck who has a domestic violence rap sheet at Ft. Benning.

3. If you're an SF NCO, then play the quiet professional. Just pretend you're buying your weapon from some indigs in South Bungf**k Egypt. Their turf, their rules.

If #2 is the main reason, who signs the permission slip when an out-of-towner wants to buy a gun?

Better get my pistol before I leave then (and promptly put it into storage for three months).

I'm under the impression that the nationwide minimum age for handgun purchase is 21. Is that accurate?

21 seems to be the standard for most states; some might have it a little lower ( 18 )

According to the Gun Control Act of 1968, one must be 21 to purchase a handgun and 18 to purchase long guns.

In NC a pistol permit is required to be issued by the Sheriff's office of the individual county of residence. Requirements are NOT set by the state, neither are fees. This was initially done as a "Jim Crow" law to keep handguns out of the hands of minorities. Most counties do require a character witness, evidently in the case of military personnel Cumberland County has gone a step further... Time turn around can also vary from county to county. Less urban counties are far more liberal with issueance, I have worked gun shows near the coast and eastern NC where a deputy would be on hand to issue a permit if someone attending wanted to make a handgun purchase--if picking a permanent residence in NC this might be a factor, but for you guys that are assigned here that does not help much. Please remember that any law that prohibits/creates artificial hoops to go through/limits firearm ownership is in violation of our 2nd Ammendment rights (IMHO).

Good points, xcop. Many people don't realize that the communist inspired "gun control" racket had its origins in racism. How many know, for instance, that the term "Saturday Night Special" was originally known as "The Nigger Town Saturday Night Special?" Also, this demonstrates some of the lies told by the left. They constantly harp about training and certification for gun owners; if a specops NCO such as jtorak28 isn't qualified to own one, then who is?

There was a law passed by the liberal feminists congresswomen last year that any military service members cannot buy a gun if he/she was convicted of domestic violence. Same thing for cops and others. Maybe that why the PM office is required to sign your -gun-purchase-paper. Imagine a F-14 pilot learning he cannot fly his bird loaded with missile. The point is, "Don't beat your wife. Learn how to cook and clean so she can be happy." A conviction can carry with you for life.

Mike- You're thinking of the Lautenberg Act, authored by Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey; it was passed under the radar screen as an amendment to a pork-laden highway bill. I'm certain most of the shiny eyed, fanatical gun grabbing females also sponsored it.

Re the Lautenberg Ammendment, it has cost police officers their jobs throughout the nation--in many cases officers (or others) have had fabricated charges drawn by wife/girlfriend/etc. and entered a plea to avoid having a drawn out trial (in most cases a misdemeanor, or minor offense), and although no law is supposed to impose a penalty for an offense that occurred prior to the passage of the law, that seems to have been ignored in this instance. BTW, the law also applies to joe citizen and does not only include spouses--children are covered as well as it is a penalty against "domestic violence". Since some jurisdictions judge corporal punishment of a child as assault--well you can figure out the rest.
