View Full Version : 500 meter swimtime
I am curious as to, what is a competetive swim time for the 500 meter swim in the test before BUD/S, enlisted and officer?
For the PFT i've heard that some SEALs will not give a letter of recomendation if one can not achieve the min. below
Enlisted: sub 9 minutes
Officer: sub 8 minutes
Stew Smith recommends a 7:00 - 8:30 for competitive range.
Bear in mind it is a 500 YARD timed swim - not meters. It makes a difference!

Sub 9 is pretty darn fast compared to the 12:30 mandatory.
When I passed my SEAL PT test at Boot Camp I got a 11:55.
At BUD/s prior to first phase I was in the mid 8. I was definitely in the upper 25 percent being sub 9.
I'd concentrate on running over swimming for anyone going to BUD/s.
Thanks for the info fellas,
I just did a lifeguard tryout and got 8:20 on the 500m test. I guess I should start concentrating on UW stuff. At BUD/S do you guys do eval swims with fins or no fins? What is run distance/time for the PT test? How much running will one end up doing at BUD/S? Thanks...
Tosh--where have you been--you have not posted in a while.

Nep,
I was temporarily distracted with being lazy. :) Just been training for the Triathlon and with the nice weather lately, it has taken me away from the boards for a bit. I'm back now. Do not dispair. :)

Hello everyone. Riptide, you said that you swam your 500 in 11:55. Was that the best you could do at the time? I'm just trying to get a handle on where I am and where I need to be. Faster than yesterday is my daily goal, but I have a long way to go. How much improvement can one expect to make on swim times and technique, if any, by working out with the dive motivators during boot camp and A school? And also, I can't seem to find this on here. Are flipturns required? Or can you just grab the side and push off? Just wondering, because I hear that anything considered a pause is the end of the test for you right there. Thanks
