In the movie Black Hawk Down, they had Delta Operator "Hoot", wearing Oakley X-Metal Juliet sunglasses. I don't think those were around back in 93.
Very cool sunglasses though.

Yeah, SF guys are sponsored by Oakley. They get all the new gear years ahead of time to try it out. Just like the Japanese. My unit is sponsored by Gatorade and Power Bar, along with Hustler of course.

No, it's a permanant sponsorship. They pay for tatoo space. It really hurt when I got the profalactic endorsement.

I've been reading on TF forums and Lightfighter about prefered sunglasses for military use. Oakley seems to be the number one choice in manufacturer due to optical clarity and safety.(I like the design idea of Wiley X SG-1 but have read some less than glowing reports about the lenses. Any Oakley models with a strap vs. arms? If so, I cannot find them.) I am, however, more intersted in the effects of different lenses when moving from bright light to shadow/dark. Are there preferred lenses that make the eye adjustments less dramatic without interfering with your vision? Are certain colored lenses to be avoided? Contrast is also a concern. In MOUT you may have to enter a dark building while patrolling in the mid-day sun. Wooded areas, depending on foliage density, present changes as well though probably not as sudden as in MOUT. Snow and sun make sunglasses a necessity. Are sunglasses on patrol discouraged in wooded areas? They were several years ago IIRC. Some of my concernes come about because I see such a variety of cheap, shitty eyewear being used. Gas station crap sometimes. Safety is an issue. What is the best, military use, "GP" lens and what should I avoid? I would do the research on my own but the thought of buying four pair of $100+ glasses tends to discourage me. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: Is this a dumb question? I have been unable to find the answer elsewhere and would appreciate the input of those that have BTDT.

the only person i ever saw wear sunglasses on patrol, was a Sgt. of mine of course he spent the good money to get the one that had the lenses that changed from clear in dark places to dark in bright places, nobody else in our section wore them.

i jnormally just used clear lenses and switched to a shooter's yellow towards dusk.
sometimes when i got tired of squinting i used a grey lens during the day. if i had to go inside i just took off the eyepro...not the best solution but better than not being able to see. once i did that i usually felt like i was a dumbass for not wearing eyepro which made me use clear lenses exclusively after that...for a while...until i got tired of squinting in the sunlight...
However,
the moral of this story is that there is NO universal solution to anything. EVERYTHING is about making tradeoffs according to METT-T. Just make your call and then live with it. The trick is to not spend unnessary time hand-wringing if the situation changes....recognize immediately that your COA isn't working and don't be afraid to switch....then when it's all over do an AAR and move on...

The simple answer from our side of the pond is don't - at least not on PSO/IS Ops. If you're wearing sunglasses you cannot keep and maintain eye contact with the CivPop.
On the other hand for driving/snow you need something. Personally I've used Oakleys for years. As abc123 said - adapt to the situation.

Good point on maintaining eye contact. I read that somewhere else as well. Today, I picked up a pair of flat black Oakley 20's with the polarized lens. The least reflective (shiney) lens of all the Oakleys I saw. Moderately dark lens. Less so than the colored or polished lenses. Similar in look to a plain grey lens. Great contrast on a grey day. We'll see how they work in the bright sun if it ever comes back out. I don't think I've seen the sun here in a few weeks.

pending on how bright and on how dense the woods is i either wear the brown oakley lense or wear the clear ones.... i wear them for eye protection more than sun light reasons and wear the clear lens at night as well to keep sticks out of my eyes.. it helps for faster movement at night and when it's cold it's a good to keep the wind out of the eyes too....

Which Oaklyes are you comparing them to?
I'm looking to buy a good pair of goggles for eye protection, WileyX and Oakley are on my list... i'm used Oakley's sunglassaes a lot and i really like them.
I've heard that WileyX tends to distort your view somewhat, which none of my Oakleys have ever done, and that is important to me.
Have you experienced any distortion with your WileyX??
Any input is greatly appreciated :)

I've been using the WileyX goggles for the past five months. Over 4,000 miles mostly as a turret gunner. I can't complain. When it gets dark I change out the lenses and use them under my NOD's.

I have a pair and found them to be ok. I used them a few times on LZ operations in Iraq, and they kept the majority of the dust out, but didn't work as well as full goggles did. They also had the tendency to fog up easily on me. A friend of mine also experienced this.

I have a pair of the SG-1s issued, and they fog up far too quickly. I use a pair of Oakley M frames with clear and gray lenses, and I have a pair of Fives on standby.
I am able to use the M frames under NODs. The only thing I don't like about the M frames is that I look like I should be wearing a mullet and driving a late '80s IROC:cool: .
I've tried to use some anti fog on the Wiley's to no avail.
There is a Gov't/Military discount floating around here for Oakley...

10 September 2004, 14:59
The M Frames are too big for my face, so I use the half jackets. Oakley makes a set specially for the military that comes in flat black frames with 3 sets of lenses in Smoke, clear, and yellow.

I found the Wiley-X SG-1's to be good to go. Had them on during the big dust storm during the invasion and didn't even have to squint. They did tend to fog up when the heat started climbing but it was nothing fog-x couldn't clear up.

I like my cheapo $10 glasses bought at the PX in pairs. That way, when my dumb ass sits on them, scratches them, or flat out loses them -- no whining about the money lost.
And when in dusty situations, well, its either on with the full goggles or roll up the window and turn on the AC (one of those civvie perks)....

I think you are the only other person here that shares my philosophy of sunglasses. My latest pairs cost about $18 each, though - I bought the polarized "premium" version :p .
In the field and in the desert, I wear my prescription glasses - and goggles if necessary. I finally upgraded my old GI "sun, wind, dust" goggles to the ESS vehicle operator model in anticipation of my next desert vacation - I've heard good things about their fog and dust resistance.

I've tried the oakley M frame, wiley-X SG-1 with V-cut and CQC, and the ESS profile NVG.
The results M Frame, and wiley-X are very confortable, but ESS are unconfotable if you wear them more than 1 hour.
In case of sandstorm the wiley-x and the ESS are very effective, the M Frame are not very effective, the sand comes from everywhere in your eyes.
And yes, you gonna tell me The SG-1 are quickly fogged up, yes even with the V-cut, it's always fogged up!!.
To sum up, for me the best buy is the Wiley-X CQC, very confortable, very effective against sandstorm, and not so quickly fogged up than the SG-1, and also NVGs compatible.
I hope my experience will help

Just a note on the importance of protecting your eyes:
I had a Marine who caught a branch in the eye while night patrolling in Oki; Doc flushed it out and seemed to be alright, when we got back he began having cloudy vision, in the end he spent 4 months getting treated for something they couldn't identify growing inder the surface layer of the eye. He was eventually medevac'd back to Balboa.
I've always worn glassess/goggles for protection in urban, but now I wear them all the time regardless of the terrain.
Oakley half-jackets with quick change lenses, and can take a beating if you sit/step on them. For goggles I use the Oakley A-frames with double pane lenses. They work great.

I've been trying to find a pair of magnesium M frames that have been out of production for awhile now, and the reps at oakley have run out of distributors to point me towards.
I tried a pair on a few years back and remember how much lighter and durable the owner said they were than regular M frames. They definately had a solid feel to them.

Look, if you're wearing SUNGLASSES, then go with SOTB's line of thought... unless you're a SEAL and require DG shades to help you look better.
If you're going OUT THE GATE, then you must use armor for your eyes. Think APEL. Spectacles or Goggles, your choice. If you're in a vehicle my .02 kopeks is that you should use goggles. On the ground and not in likely contact go with spectacles, and use the retention strap (snugged up). Getting into contact or kicking doors? Clear goggles.
Back at the team house out back by the pool? Put your cheap 10$ PX specials on. My favs are from the polarized specials found in the WallMart fishing section... you know, where they have fish hooks and reels for sale.

Solid, one peice aircraft aluminum frame, ANSI rated, they have polarized lenses, and now they also have transitional lenses (they cant call them "transition" lenses due to copyright issues) that go from almost clear (indoors) to dark (outdoors)...I have the latter and they are worth EVERY SINGLE PENNY of the $140 I spent on them. Native Dash XPs for shades. If I need more ballistic protection: M frames.
We were issued a set of ICE glasses from ESS with clear and Dark lenses. They didn't last very long. I still have a pair that I keep in my boat bag with clear lenses for night time. I've been rocking Oakley Half Jackets since last deployment, the only drawback being the ear pices digging into my head when wering comms.
I stopped by GSS just before deployment and picked up a pair of Native Ignition sunnies. These are the heat! comfortable, ventilation holes at the top and they are nicely polarized. As much as I like my Oakleys, Natives find more "face time."

I love the WileyX sg-1 kit... it is pretty much an all purpose type deal with all its different provisions. I took a scope to the face while adjusting my eye relief behind my .50 and they absorbed the entire blow leaving me chuckling stupidly... These can pull double duty as daily glasses or duty/field goggles.
I also savvy the Revision Sawfly kit and Use the Desert locust as an "over goggle" when shooting larger calibers...
The bullet ants are next on my hit list to test drive.
I have actually secured the wiley x and revision glasses brand new for under 40.00 with a little internet trolling... to me, that beats cheapie body glove glasses any day with the addition of ballistic protection...

My wife doesn't think they are as cool as I do, but I love them. I have a pair of M-frames that I wore in Iraq after I got back and went back to the fire dept I was responding to a call hot. I had set the Oakleys on the dash of the truck took a corner a little fast and they slid right out the window. Couldnt stop I was pissed. After the call I went back and picked up what was left. They had been run over several times as this was a busy road. The lense had come out of the frame and had stress fractures and lots of scratches. It was NOT broken. The frames were also somewhat scratched but not broken and Im still wearing them with a replacement lense.

They had been run over several times as this was a busy road. The lense had come out of the frame and had stress fractures and lots of scratches. It was NOT broken. The frames were also somewhat scratched but not broken and Im still wearing them with a replacement lense.
That is exactly why I wear Oakleys. Everything is indestructable or replacable.

So, members of SOCNET, what is the concensus on a nice pair of "casual" sunglasses? I'm looking for something that doesn't scream "I'm military" (ie not Oakleys) or "I'm a giant douche" (ie not.. well I don't want to offend anyone ;) )...but still of course looks cool

Because I don't need ballistic protection on a daily basis anymore and I try to be surrounded by water when the weather is nice. But I still have Oakley's for putting a few rounds out for fun.

Also, I didn't spend $45, I spent $10. All types of stores offer deals on overstocked items....

Thanks. Coincidentally, I went the same route and got a pair of Kenneth Cole Reactions a couple days ago. I didn't pay $10 though, it was more of an impulse buy at the mall.
Maui Jim's, teva's and a nipple ring - you are all set!
