Hi, seeing as you want to go S/F's another option maybe(if your in sydney) to join 1 cdo at mosman, I think their still there or a reserve unit where your living, they will put you through intiall training, once your in a reserve unit you will be eligable to apply for SAS selection when it comes up, already being an armed forces member. If you go through the normal channels you might find it difficult to get from the battalion your sent to into S/F as they don't like training guys up just to lose them & as said before if you mention that you want S/F's in kapooka or where you go, they will label you a wanker & this will filter back to your CO, this could start a few problems, if it's not to late check the reserve option, ring 1 cdo reserve unit, army careers office should have the phone no. but don't mention the S/F thing, you can always join the regular army from the reserves later & I think your chances of getting to S/F's will be better, when I was in the reserves getting on a selection course was not a drama. Good luck!

Thanks for the info there. I enlist on June 18. I'm not sure if I have the time to change things around now. I have waited quite awhile to get this far. I applied last November, and I am only just now going to enlist in 3 weeks. I will do whatever it takes once I feel I am ready.
I am grateful for you taking the time to let me know another option. I don't want to risk having to wait for another extended period of time. I am already at risk of losing my job in the civvie world due to poor managerial staff. I need to get in and I need to get in now. Again I appreciate your insight, and willingness to help me out. Please don't take this for blowing you off. My back is against the wall at this point.
Thanks

As for non conventional units, well it all depends upon where you are.
Melbourn - 2 Commando company
Sydney - 1 commando company, 1 commando HQ, and 4 RAR (commando) reserve section or regular.
Perth - SASR, including reserve elements.
Brisbane - 3 commando company (if that gets up and running).
There are also 3 regional force surveilance units;
51 Far North Queensland Regiment
NORFORCE
Pilbara regiment
It also depends upon what you want to do. Australian commandos are in a similar vien to the US rangers. Direct action (piss em' off) missions.
I hae heard you're in Sydney - if that is the case go for commando. If you are so inclined, specialise as a medical assistant or signals.
There are sooooo many rumors as to how the Australian army will expand. Some say that they might raise a second reserve commando regiment or a reserve SAS regiment (similar to what the Brits have being tasked with covert logistics and surveilance/recon). But don't hold your breath.
Email me if I can be of any more help. Anyway have a good one.

....Thanks for the post. I did not know exactly how many units the ADF had in SOF's. For now when I feel I am ready I think that one of the CDO units will do me just fine.....to start. I had a guess that CDO was like the Rangers. I would really like to be able to stay in Sydney as well.
I enlist on the 18th so I'll begin there. We shall see how things pan out. For now I will just take things one step at a time.
Thanks again.

...and then I'm off to Kapooka. I really looking forward to getting back into things. I was at Steele Barracks last night and had a chance to meet some good people. Real professional guys.

Hey castle if you want to stay in Sydney volunteer for a Para course, there is an engineer spliter group attached to 3RAR.Once you get para wings being posted out of sydney becomes slim.
As for joining reserves CDO its not a living is it?Its a hobby. You might as well join Regs compared to all the time you'd have to put into chocdos.

You have a point there. I was thinking the same thing. Airborne is definitely something I want to do as well. Wether i go outside of SASR or while in I don't mind.

C37B, am I correct in assuming you were once a US citizen?

...I am able to join, because I have permanent residency. Once I join I will file for dual citizenship. So I will be both a U.S. citizen and an Australian citizen. That's how it works....
Look man it's ok. There is no harm in asking, and that was a valid question. :D Hope that helped.

I thought you lost your US citizenship if you joined another countries military?
Gracias mi amigo and buenas suerte,

It wasn't always the case here. At one time you did lose it. Now though, you can gain dual citizenship here. If that wasn't so I would not do it :)
ĄDe nada y muchas gracias mi amigo! :D

So how long does it take to get permanent resident status? How long is the average wait for a "wetback" to get into the OZ military from the time he steps of the plane? Does the samego for the Kiwi military?
BTW, best of luck to ya.
I'm sure you have to be a citizen which takes 2 yrs i think.Unless you are a kiwi then you can join and become a citizen

I hope this bloke doesn't babble on about wanting to join the SASR before he's even finished infantry IET's at Singo.
I remember going through PTS, parachute training school, down at Nowra. One of the blokes on the course was always raving about SASR, when he was out on the town he even told the local slags that he was a Trooper, hoping it would work as a leg spreader.
Only prob was our instructor was a corporal in the SASR, when he eventually heard the bs he was pretty good natured about it all and only laughed and put shit on the guy. Real SASR blokes doing free fall courses at the same time as our basic para, used to cheer the bloke whenever they saw him.
Later on I did the cadre myself, failed it, along with a bloke from Britains 1para who everyone thought was a living legend and a shoe in for selection.
This bloke was loved in the Bn, everyone loved to hear his nothern Ireland stories and other crap. Surprisingly the cadre staff didn't take to the bloke and by day three were saying he had the makings of a real jack cunt, truer words never spoken! Second week I ended up having to help stretcher carry the malingering fuck to the medics wagon, the terrain was so rude and the pommie so heavy it was like a mini sterlings.
Mangda, the name of the guy wasn't Haddock by any chance was it?
Just curious.

That's the cunt! Nick Haddok.Couple of years ago I saw him on 'Bourkes Backyard', I pissed myself laughing, last time I'd seen the bloke he was in sig platoon 1RAR, and had just scored a 10k debt after he totaled his girlfriends car when he was drunk or unlicenced or something.
On Bourkes Backyard he was Sergeant at Duntroon or General Cosgroves boot boy or something, showed him trying to look, and sound, like a regi cunt.
On more thought my story was arse backwards, on the cadre the DS hated the bloke, JC status etc, but the malingering stretcher carry happened during sub 2 for corporal at Tully that same year. On the sub 2 we had sasr guys as well as a DS who had been cadre staff on the selection we'd both flunked, and they gave him a hard time.
Small world!:D
I know where you're coming from. The guy definitely ran hot and cold on a whim. He could be a decent guy if he wasn't such a deadshit at times.

The blokes biggest malfunction was that he was a pussy, no goddamn honour! Pretending to be exhausted/down with heat and having other blokes, equally shattered, have to haul his sorry arse.
I remember another funny bloke from recon plt 1RAR, this was about 87/88, this dude was covered in tatooed insignia, 2REP, waffen ss, Selous Scouts etc. We were in the boozer one afternoon and this tatooed freak was trying to tell me he had served in the Selous Scouts, he had the tatt so it must be true! He must have been the only 13 year old to serve though!
It wouldn't be the Army if it were any other way!

Just out of curiosity did you know 'Rufus' and Gareth Jones? Rufus was a top notch soldier, but sometimes drifted off into a bit of a psycho drama.
In 3RAR we had Preston, 'Stomper' and a few others, although Preston got killed years back.
Last I saw of 'Rufus' was just before I got out, he'd been posted down to 4RAR.
