You don't do this job for the money. If you want to be an O go to college, if not put your name on the line and go for an adventure of a life time. BUT DO NOT DO IT FOR THE MONEY. By the way you don't make much either as an O or E.

Right on Rat...... when it comes down to it. the honor and respect a person earns from being a SEAL should be the main drive force for wanting to be a SEAL.... Not to mention the self resect and accomplishment a person gets form obtaining the "budweiser"... DUTY HONOR COUNTRY...... but. in respose to the question... not bad pay. O's get signing bonuses if they stick around... a few grand. not much...

Its a truly sad statement when a society is willing to pay its sports professionals and movie stars millions of dollars a year for entertainment, but bristles when asked to foot the bill for a meager pay raise for its protective services (police, firefighters, military, etc).

Damn straight Razor!!! Those who provide us the most crucial of services and sacrifice so much are those who society in general looks down upon.

Well i don't know if you cansay your pay reflects how much people think of you. Sure they get more. Sure their job is tough. Sure the pay.... lets face it... sucks... but ya see, sports make merchandising... and those few who believe that the world is money and nothing else( yea i know ya need money to survive, but honor and respect are just as important) are willing to pay out rageous and ridiculous amounts of money if it makes them even more money. Cops can't merchandise. Nowadays not too many want to jobs like that or military for that matter because it is a dangerous work and most people have no courage. ( course if cops made millions everyone and their brother would be a cop as fast as you could bat an eyelash)The main pay i guess( as much as a cliche as it sounds) is the self gratification of doing a job well done.

I definately agree that police, firefighters, military..etc. don't get paid nearly enough for the amount of time and pure dedication they put into their job. However if they were paid what they are worth you would have the wrong people signing up for the wrong reasons.

base pay + dive pay + jump pay

these are the main 3

$60,000 for a 4 yr reup as a LT

not sure enlisted

foreign laungage pay is like $50-$60 per lang. also

I do not know this from experience...only from what the specwar presentation guy said at drill one day (ROTC)

Also, he said an experienced E-5 makes more than an O-1

It sounds great to me, I'm in college and broke, so $30-$35,000 ain't too bad first year back in!

How to Make a Lot of Money in the Military
(Really)
*This applies to Canadian Forces only-don't know about the US, but I'm sure a US citizen can apply as they can join the forces.

1. If you qualify for Medical school, you can submit an application for CF Medical Services DEO (Direct Entry Officer)
2. You get commisioned as a Capt, medical school is all paid for, do your summers (3 I think) doing your basic training while getting paid as full time member ($30-35K /yr) while going to school.
3. Finish Med school, become CF doctor for 4 year hitch (paid $80,000/yr plus bonuses for tours. You will get your choice of tours, ther're so short-handed.)
4. Finish service, move to US and rake in the dough in some big HMO and join Army Reserve/NG.

I'm not kidding, our brigade says they are currently 22 doctors short, with expected shortage to double. If you're gonna do it for the money, this is the only way I've heard of that works. Of course as a doctor, you're not going to get to do any high-speed stuff, but there's trade-offs to everything.

Preston- There are a number of variables in SEAL pay, as some of the guys have mentioned. Excluding dive pay, jump pay, hazardous duty pay, et al, at the basic level it is determined by the paygrade, time in rate, and time in service of the man. There are nine enlisted paygrades, E-1 thru E-9 (Seaman Recruit thru Master Chief. For officers, it's O-1 thru 0-10, with a special category for people who served as enlisted and went officer 0-1E thru 0-3E). The point is that a man's pay is determined by his rank, hope this helps.

I never knew you even got paid to be a SEAL until a couple of months ago . A place to sleep, eat and have the opportunity to be trained by SEALs is unbelieveable in it's own right . I have TREMENDOUS GRATITUDE for the chance that I have to enlist in the military and for everyone who has help me with my endeavors . I don't think they're words to describe how fortunate I feel .

Sax:

1. You only get the language bonus if you are actually using the language in question in your duty station...you don't just get paid to know multiple languages (I wish you did.)

2. I don't know many E-5s that make more than officers...even "experienced" ones.

All of the participants on this board are not 14-18 year olds, srrf. In fact, some of the particants on this board have 14-18 years of operational experience. And, yes, even teenagers can have good ideas...

Granted, there is a great deal of guessing, posturing, and brain farting on this board...but that does not mean you should condemn everyone on the board. Please do not lump us "all" (sic) together when you yourself are an unknown quantity. Also, please refrain from your "you alls" on this board, you're offending my southern sensibilities http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/wink.gif

Preston -

Just remember that even though all the Dive Pay, Jump Pay, Special Duty Assignment Pay, and SDV pay sound great, remember that when you retire your retirement amount is based on your "BASE PAY". Which is really equal to about 25% of your ACTUAL pay.

to Baja, you wrote:<<1. You only get the language bonus if you are actually using the language in question in your duty station...you don't just get paid to know multiple languages (I wish you did.) >>

Only if you passed the DLI foreign language contency exam, right? And regardless of whether you're are using the language or not, it doesn't really matter. For example,
A Chinese-speaking SEAL in ST1 will still get paid, even if he is not in Beijing already, grin; an Arabic-speaking SEAL in ST3 will use it in SA or Bahrain; a Korean-speaking SEAL in ST5 will use Korean when in South Korea; French-speaking or German-speaking SEALs in ST2 will use it a lot whether they are in Little Creek or in France or Germany; Spanish-speaking SEALs in ST4 will use Spanish a lot, except in Brazil, for obviously reasons, haha; for for ST8, good luck with Swahili.

to srff,
got anything to contribute rather than telling people to @#$%? Obviously, since you don't know anything otherwise you will post something useful.
A wise man should have told you, "the one who know a lot are also the ones who don't know all if they have nothing to said."

Mike,

Not sure how the Navy runs it, but in SF you had to take an annual Defense Language Proficiency Test in each language you wanted to receive a rating. Most SF guys nowadays receive their initial language training at the BMLC at Ft Bragg, not at DLI. The Army has coded the 18 series MOS as a paid language position, so as long as you spoke a language at the required proficiency (most being a 2/2), you would be paid anywhere from $25 to $100 bucks a month, in $25 increments, depending on your proficiency. The language didn't even have to be in your AOR. If you spoke fluent Mandarin Chinese and were a memeber of 7th Group, you'd still be paid, but you'd be of little use to your team. That's why many groups run an annual language refresher for a variable period of time; you can either brush up on your AOR language skills or learn one, if necessary.

Mike:

There are options beyond passing the DLI tests to measure language competency (State has their own tests that can carryover...etc.), but the DLI-type proficiency tests are probably the most common.

As to not getting paid "just" for knowing a foreign language...? You do not. I may have been misunderstood in my original post. As you indicate, you do not have to be "in country" to use a language (good examples, by the way.) http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/wink.gif You may utilize your 'Swahili' skills and never leave Little Creek...and you would be paid for using those skills.

However, if you are fluent in Spanish and are NOT assigned to a team/duty station that uses that language (be it for training, intel analysis or whatever), you will NOT be paid for your Spanish skills. Many guys assume that they will automatically be assigned to ST4 if they habla...not necessarily. You go where they have openings. Language skills can play a part in determining where you are assigned, but my point is that you shouldn't count on the moolah just because you speak a 2nd (or multiple) languages...
