I figured I'd post this here before trying to sort out the BBS system at specialtactics.com or usafcct.com . . .

Anyway -- does anyone know if the 20/70 best eye, 20/100 worst eye vision requirement for CCT is waiverable? If it is not, does anyone know the USAF's stance on LASIK, PRK, etc.?

Your best bet is to search specialtactics.com they people who know run that site, and can probably give you better advice.

Have you talked to a recruiter yet? Ask him/her what the vision requirements are for Air Traffic Control, and are they waiverable? That should give you a good starting point.

Oh yeah . . . I've been dicking around with my current (Army Nat'l Guard) and prospective service's bureaucratic hard-chargers for almost a year now trying to get from the ARNG to active duty with the USAF. My recruiter is of the opinion that I'm medically qualified for CCT (and for ATC, but the vision requirement for that is lower), but I'm not sure how much experience he has with getting people placed in special tactics slots. Just thought I'd try and do a bit of research before bringing the vision issue up with him.

The real plus is that he also thinks he can get orders cut for the pipeline pretty much immediately if I pass the PAST test, which would be a bit more fun than sitting here waiting for the bureaucrats who've had my packet for months to kick loose a prior service slot for me in any of the dozen or so other career fields I told them I'd be happy to go into. Strikes me as messed up that it would be easier to get into CCT than, say, the Security Forces (no insult to anyone in the field, just an example), but I gather the military's opinion of and approach to prior service personnel in general is a bit illogical at the best of times.

I believe that recruiters get some kind of bonus for successfully signing up a potential PJ/CCT. The PAST test is the least of your worries, it is merely the door cracking open for you...

CCT and PJ are in a hurt locker for manning. I wish I could go back and come back in as a youngster again, you guys are getting some friggin' SERIOUS money nowadays. I say you should go for it, as you will not regret one moment of the pipeline etc.

Good Luck and blue skies....

Horse!

I see you've been around some military for quite a while as for myself I was active ARMY for 4 years in Artillery one of the shit hole jobs..Now I'm in the AirForce pending class date for CCT. I thought when I came in the AirForce there would be less Bull*hit
....not quite ...its Military wide...now I dont know about ARNG but I will say this when I made the transition from Army to AirForce I stuck close to my AirForce recruiter but mostly his.. BOSS...I was prior service they didnt give a sh*t about me I was on the phone almost ever day and it still took me almost 7 months.....(And my recruiter was pretty cool and forward) But about your sight I know that if your colorblind to a certain degree then ur screwed. But youll find the best answers on SPECIALTACTICS.COM many people have asked the same questions........Never the less your not alone and its not the Politics that are holding you up its some lazy ass MF somewhere who gets paid a government salery to push paperwork but does see the other end..Anyway I could sit here all night and talk shit but the bottom line is get smart! do your research on here and other sights! make phone calls till you get your answer. If you want it bad enough theres ways around everything...

{ I WOULD SAY GOOD LUCK BUT WHAT THE HELL
DOES LUCK HAVE TO DO WITH IT }
AND LIKE MY FATHER ONCE TOLD ME
(YOU CATCH MORE BEES WITH HONEY THAN VINIGAR)

P.S. I just walked my friend through the sigh up portion of the AirForce he never thought he would get in given his past but he did.
If you got any questions send me an E-mail I'll do my best to help you out in any way

Please go to specialtactics.com and get the contact info for TSG Hicks. He is a recruiter that deals ONLY with CCT/PJ trainees. He's located at Hurlburt Field, FL. He has the latest intel/requirements for USAF STS.

I thank you for your perseverance. All the DOD has lazy ass mo fo's who simply do NOT care about you wanting to better yourself. Your typical recruiter does not know squat about CCT/PJ. Our MOS/AFSC entry requirements had to be changed (costing millions) due to the USAF not recruiting properly for combat control and pararescue. Rather than fix the problem (recruiting), why not spend millions changing it?

Hang in there, keep your goal firmly locked away inside. As a prior service troop, you'll be squared away ten times more than the youngsters in the pipeline. Set the example for them (as expected) and enjoy the training!

Everybody in the pipeline is squared away. If they weren't they wouldn't be in it. If prior service has an edge it's because they have a familiarity with the way the military works.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posted with information and/or advice.

Looking over the boards at Special Tactics I get the sense that my prospects are pretty slim with my current vision -- at least one post already summarized my situation pretty much identically (20/200 vision both eyes, both correctable to 20/20) and I believe the phrase used was "nigh upon impossible" concerning a waiver.

SATCOM -- Thanks for the point of contact. I plan on getting in touch with TSgt. Hicks just to verify the information from the site. Hopefully, even if a waiver is out, I can see about cross-training into CCT if I can get some other job in the USAF before I reach retirement age (which seems questionable these days) and get my vision corrected.

lbtravel24 -- Also thanks for the information. My situation sounds similar (recruiter has been quite helpful, but the whole process seems to have stalled above his level). They'll have been sitting on my packet for about 5 months come mid-August. In the meantime I'm going to see if the recruiter can steer me towards someone higher in the process to pester.

Thanks again,
James

Okay guys,
Here it goes...I am on DEP for CCT. My leave date is Dec 17. I had color vision problems as well. The only way to get into CCT with color vision problems is to pass the Ishahara, or the D'Vorin tests. The Ishahara deals with only red/green, and the d'vorin is all colors. I passed the Ishahara test, and got my waiver. I called Tsgt. Hicks before

btw...about the PAST test and all...If you have problems with that test...get to navyseals.com and download the 6 Weeks to BUDS training regimen, or specialtactics.com and download 2LT Steve Joo's "The Workout" plan. Both tremendous workouts.
