What do National Guard Special Forces do? Do they go throught the same selection course as active duty personnel?

Scout

Same thing active duty guys do. Training is the same: SFAS, SFQC, Language, etc.

the NG SF go on the same missions... I *believe* that all the NG units operate in latin and south america but not absolutely sure. They just aren't in the field near as much and don't train as much

Roses are Red violets are Blue...I know a hell of a lot more than all of you LOL
The SFNG are the busiest they've ever been. My closest friend is a Team Daddy with D/3/19
and I spoke with him yesterday. We were both in 12th ( and in 2nd Ranger Batt ,where we first met 20 fucking years ago! Damn I am old! lol) before it was deactivated and the company moved over to the 19th. He just got back from Bragg and this year he has been all over the Pacific on deployments and is going back to Bragg for the new high speed SOG school (I can't remember what they call it now... It was SOG back in the early 80's when I went). Dan says the line between Active and the Guard is really thin and when folks are called up they had better know their shit cause they hit the ground running. If you're single and love the life it may be a good way to go. God Bless

Thanks for the information. I had heard of them, but I just wasn't sure what their exact purpose was.

RangerHazen is right, Guard SF groups are busy as hell. Down here with 1/20th, we're sending teams down range constantly, and doing at least one full BN deployment a year.

Sam, 20th is focused on Latin America, 19th is focused on Asia, with one BN geared towards Europe, I believe.

I have a quick question. I thought I saw that there is an SF/NG Unit here in the Panhandle of Florida. Am I right, and if so, does anyone have any contact information or a web address? Appreciate any info that could be given. Thanks in advance!

Motivator,

I appreciate the information that you posted. I've already called the number, and unfortunately, all the operator could do was send me recruiting information. She did not have any numbers to give concerning a NG/SF unit here in the Florida Panhandle. However, I am sending in my request via the web to see what additional info will be sent.

I would like to talk to someone in that specific unit, if it exists, so that I know exactly what hoops I need to jump through when talking to a recruiter, who I have generally found to be 'clueless' about SF. I am not slamming Army recruiters, but generally all recruiters (Navy too), because most of them are unfamiliar with Special Operations and personnel.

Although, I do have one other question, when sending in my information the web site should I request information related to the "Warrant or Enlisted" route? I am prior service, Navy Crypto (E-4) with five years AD (RE-1). My ASVAB score: AR + VE = 118 & MC 50. I will receive my Masters Degree in two weeks (3.6 GPA). Oh, I turn 34 on 15th of December. Do you have any thoughts, ideas or suggestions? Thanks again and cheers!

The closest unit to you(?) is either in South Alabama or Ocala. When I lived in Panama City, I thought about both. If you live west of PC, I would suggest going to Alabama where 20th Group HQ is (Montgomery).

Check these out: http://216.79.119.5/SpecialForces/index.htm http://alguard.state.al.us/

I hope that this helps.

Just a quick question does Kentucky have a NGSF unit?

Just curious

CTA:

1. All the National Guard will send you in the mail is a pamphlet about the Guard (useless).

2. When you called 1-800-GOGUARD they should have gave you a number to the closest NG recruiter. Call them and tell them what you want; be persistent. If it's SF you want, then tell them SF. They will call the closest SF unit and will set you up with an appointment. The SF unit will ask you some questions and see if SF is for you. They will determine if they want you or not.

3. Being 34 years old you better be in damn good shape. It will take approx. 1 1/2 to 2 years to even be tabbed. I'm not knocking the Navy, but they don't teach land navigation, patrolling, small unit tactics, etc., so download some Army manuals on your free time and start studying those. You can find most of them on this website.

Good luck

Kentucky has a USAF CCT unit in Louisville. I'm not sure if they're Air National Guard or USAF Reserve.

One of the most-asked question but never answered is the full structure of the 19th and 20th SFGs of the NG. Can anyone provide this information and give a chart to Tom?

Glen Arm, MD... and most of this stuff is available on the web. If you just do a search (i.e. google.com --> 'Maryland Special Forces') you can just get the information for yourself.

You should try looking for yourself before you ask easily found questions, 'least in my opinion.

Mike,

There's a break down on 20th Group on MAJ Payne's Quiet Professionals page, which you can find linked in the SF secion of this website. Unfortunately, I haven't seen similar for 19th Group, though it would be nice if there was one.

This site has a lot of info on the history of berets in the Army as well as a reference to the 17th Cav training for deployment to Vietnam with the 19th SFG at Camp Dawson in 1967.
http://www.splorg.org/vietnam/

I took part in that FTX and do not remember the details of the incident mentioned ...I do know that one night my team took out one of their FOB's and "destroyed" all the choppers. I bet that somehow that incident was left out of their evaluation report (perhaps we weren't playing by their rules!). We took no prisoners and disappeared into the mountains......The next few days they tried to flush us out with choppers but were unsucessfull

There is a career counselor at Ft. Bragg who's mission is Gaurd and Reserve retention. He is SF qualified, from 19th Group and will help out anyone thinking about joining SOF. He know exactly where all the units are and who the POC's are. And he will take time to talk to anyone.

We just had a guy come back from SFAS and was selected. He is 37 years old ! One of my fellow trainees from the VA Indoctrination Program is going down in Janurary; he is 43! If you want to do it, go for yours and don't quit! The National Guard is great because most states have an Indoctrination Program or training detachment that prepares you for an 80% success rate to pass SFAS. We sent 8 this past year and all eight were selected.
