as for long range shooting in .308 .. I know it's probably best to handload .. but as far as factory ammo .. what would you recomend

You trying to punch holes in paper or kill something? The HPBT is more accurate. The silvertip was not designed for long range accuracy.

Actually, neither. Sharky gave the choice in bullets . But for long range work the 175gr HPBT SierraMatchKing is the superior bullet, same bullet used in the issue Long Range M118 or M118LR. This gives you improved performance by extending the rannge that the bullet goes trans sonic and also "bucks" the wind better.

it would be used for long range target shooting .. so I guess the HPBT would be the best choice .. but I suppose for hunting the SilverTip would be better ?? and I'll check out the Sierra Match King bullets .. thanks for the tips guys

It boils down to two major considerations, Twist Ratio and Barrel Length. It is not an exact science, since all factory loads are different and vary from batch to batch within the same brand. The best you can do is to buy a box or two of a couple of brands/loads and fire a couple of test groups.

Here's one for ya, I have 2 almost identical M1 National Match Rifles. They have different scopes and triggers, but the barrels are identical. One seems to like heavier ammo, while the other shoots better with lighter loads. I think it has something to do with the bedding and chamber tolerences in the "lighter" rifle.
