What and why is there a probatonary period after BUD's and how long is it for??

It is a period of time for which you are assigned to a SEAL Team, but do not have a Trident (SEAL Qualification). The actual time varies according to individual and command, but between 6 months and a year has been normal in my experience. The purpose is to further screen f@#%-ups. Why? - some guys have a hard time transitioning from a highly structured environment like BUD/S to a situation that calls for more maturity, accountability, and self-reliance.
