Actually, I watch a program about Zaitsev that said he had a girlfriend that was also a sniper. They both racked up a lot of kills.

check out the book "War of the Rats". Its the fictional story that the movie is based off of. Names are correct but it imbellished the facts.

I saw something on the history channel on snipers and it told the same story that the movie looks based on (and maybe the book).

The fight between Zaitsev and Koening is well known in the Sniper Community.

Didn't it end when the German sniper stepped on a land-mine or something? Blew his leg off?

No...it ended with lead poisoning of Koening, by Zaitsev.

But Gunny, the important question is:
was it .308, or 7.62???

Ah....7.62X54R from a 91/30 Moisin Nagant with a 3.5X PU scope.
There is a second fairly good movie currently on HBO, "Shot in the Heart" set in Sarajevo about two friends, one Muslim one Serb both rifle team memebers. The Serb ends up one of the snipers killing civies and the Muslim a counter sniper. Though a lot of heart pulling is involved the tactics that do emerge are great MOUT sniper ops. The sniper advisor "Ivan Steiner" did a decent job http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/biggrin.gif In all gives a good idea of that conflict and the friend against friend side of it.

From what I remember, Zaitsev propped a helmet up somewhere and waited in another location, Koening shot the helmet and stuck his head up to confirm his kill. When he did that he got lead poisoning. By the way, what makes a kill a confirmed kill on the records?

What makes a confirmed kill ? This one has been debated recently on some of these forums, and no one could provide an uathoritative reposnse. The Marine Corps has no policy on this. To the contrary, during the Gulf War we were told that trying to confirm kills would not be tolerated.
In vietnam, it requireed a person other than the shooter, to witness the shot, and the the casualty.

I git da sam prolem.
Koning is the way to spell it, I think lol
Major Konings correct spelling, Zaitsev's partner Nikolay Kulikov a political instructor.
The following is a direct quote made by Zaitsev about the last shots fired in their four day duel, enjoy.
"The sun rose.Kulikov took a blind shot:we had to rouse the sniper's curiosity. We had decided to spend the morning waiting, as we might have been given away by the sun on our telescopic sights. After lunch our rifles were in the shade and the sun was shining directly on the German's position. At the edge of the sheet metal something was glittering an odd bit of glass or telescopic sight? Kulikov carefully, as only the experienced can do, began to raise his helmet. The German fired. For a fraction of a second Kulikov rose and screamed. The German believed that he had finally got the Soviet sniper he had been hunting for four days, and half raised his head from beneath the sheet metal. That was what I had been banking on. i took careful aim. The German's head fell back, and the telescopic sights of his rifle lay motionless, glistening in the sun until night fell"
Take care...Jim
