View Full Version : Steps For Entering the 160th SOAR

First off, let me just say that although I'm sixteen (17 in October), I have thought alot about my future career, spent alot of time looking into different fields, and am coming here now to ask the neccessary info.
I have always been deeply interested in aviation, and my favorite games are flight simulators, especially helicopters. When I found out about the 160th SOAR, I read as much as I could on them, and was deeply interested in them. Now don't get me wrong; I didn't see it as glamour, or think "Blackhawk Down" was a giant thriller and gave me a false rush. I always had a deep respect for the 160th ever since I found out about them.
As of late, I've realized that I'm going to have to think very seriously about a career, since I only have two more years of high school. One of my deep interests (I have four interests altogether [and I will continue to research all four]) is entering the Army aviation field. Naturally, my bent is toward the 160th. From what I've learned from other older freinds and previous posts here, a good path would be taking college for about four years, taking a FAST, then entering Army aviation, possibly as a crew chief.
But here are my questions: how do you get into ROTC and have them pay your way through college? What classes in college would be important for aviation later on? (Trig [?], aeuranautics, etc.) How long does one have to be in Army aviation before the 160th will consider them to join? If I wanted to fly, let's say, the AH-6, how would I do that? Only the 160th is allowed to fly that. Would they train a person once they entered?
If anyone could give any additional tips, or pointers, or any kind of help, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Hawk out.

Depends on how good you are. Take it one step at a time. Join the Army first, then put in an application.

First off, choose a colege with an Army ROTC program. Then apply and get accepted to that college. Contact the ROTC admissions guy and ask for a scholarship form. Fill that out and submit it. If you have at least a 3.0gpa, you should get accepted at most schools. Before you actually start getting scholarship money, you have to be able to pass the Army APFT, so make sure you can do that.
