The Pearl Harbor-based nuclear submarine USS Greeneville (SSN 772) last week launched and recovered the Advanced SEAL Delivery System, marking the last significant test of the system before its operational evaluation. The ASDS is a mini-submarine that can transport Navy SEALs and their combat gear to and from hostile shores for special operations missions. The most recent test involved successful multiple launch and recovery docking scenarios with Greeneville.
The Greeneville and USS Charlotte (SSN 766) are the two Pearl Harbor submarines currently configured and certified to host ASDS. In addition, the Navy's plans to convert four Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) to guided missile submarines (SSGNs) include the capability for the SSGNs to carry up to two ASDS vehicles.

Greenville could be a terribly effective weapon if they just told the crew that that enemy boat over there was FRIENDLY.

What city was the Greeneville named after?
Greeneville, TN, or SC?
Just curious...

I remember reading somewhere that residents of the town sent cards & messages to the crew in support after the Ehime Maru accident.
Ummm Hmmm I just found out she was sponsored by Tipper Gore....

Biggest deficiency I've heard about with the ASDS is the batteries.

Over 2 weeks ago the USS La Jolla surfaced off the coast of South East Queensland (Australia) in 3m seas, and a boat motored out to drop off some personnel. The local newspaper said they were leaving probably after doing some training with the SASR. Funnily enough a day or two later they stopped at port in Brisbane anyway for 6 days shore leave! The pics of her in port clearly show a dry deck shelter on the top behind the tower which opens backwards - certainly looks like the sort of thing the ASDS may fit into!!! Would anyone want the newspaper B&W pics scanned and linked here?

The ASDS is too long and big for the DDS
ASDS's is almost 70 feet long and the DDS just under 40.
