Was an Excellent marksman at one time, but haven't used the skills for a decade.

Thinking of buying a .22 rifle in an attempt see if any skill remains.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to get. Bolt or auto?

Was actually thinking of a 10/22 but getting better sights.

Any help appreciated.

TjinAZ, What's yer price range, and what would you like to do with the rifle when you're not retraining?

A good bolt action .223 is a good gun for both plinking and varmint hunting, but likely as not won't be acceptable for deer hunting.

On the other hand, a .308 is too far on the other end of the spectrum.

I've had several Anchutz .22 target rifles, but their price is astronomical, and they're too heavy for hunting (except for 300 meter prairie dog hunting!) Your idea of a 10/22 is good for starters, but you may find that the factory trigger slop and the poor sights may have you frustrated fairly quickly. But then again, the Ruger can be worked on in just about any direction you want to take it. There is a LARGE amount of aftermarket goods available for that gun, from stocks to sights with everything in between.

Bolt Action: Dan Wesson .22 "Coyote Hunter". Great sights, good trigger, well made, shoots well right out of the box. Doesn't cost too much (Mid $200's).

Semi: Tried and true: Ruger 10/22. I don't like the sights, I don't like the stock, the magazines can be tempramental as hell too. But for $130-$160 retail you can't go wrong. I have 2 in different configurations.

If I could only have one, I'd take the Dan Wesson.

Wow that Kimber is nice. But.. for $700 I could get a full size rifle.

Can't find any info on the Coyote Hunter. If you have a link please post it.

I think I will go with the 10/22 stainless with the synthetic stock. There are some good cheap hooded sights you can get from Dillon. Only thing I don't like about the 10/22 is the size. It feels so small, but found one for $140 NIB.

Thanks for the advice.
