I'm looking for some information on the USAR Special Forces Groups (11th, 12th) and ARNG SFGs (19th, 20th) during the Cold War -- well, up until the 11th and 12th were done away with in '95, would be fine.

#1.) What were the primary geographic responsibilities of the reserve component SFGs (i.e. had we gone head to head with the Soviets, does anyone know where these guys would have been deployed?)?

#2.) What states were the different groups based out of. I know 20th Group was Alabama and Florida and 19th was Utah, but any info on 11th and 12th would be great.

When I talked to the Recruiter from 19th, he said for a language, I'd probably learn Korean, so at this date they are in the Asian theatre. Dunno if they always were, wait for an Older, seasoned, expierenced BTDT to answer.

The 11th Grp was originally HQ'd in Boston, then moved to Staten Island, NY , moved again to Tappan, NY and then finally to Ft Meade, MD. As I recall the 11th had it's detachments located in areas located east of the Mississippi. Ohio, Maryland, Florida, Mass.

The 12th Grp was HQ'd in Chicago, then Oak Park, IL, and finally moved to Arlington Heights, IL. The 12th had detachments west of the Mississppi. Seattle, Oklahoma City, & Hawaii come to mind. I think there may have been a Co in California too. (Disco Company! lol)

The 19th SFG has been HQ'd in Salt Lake City since it inception in 61. In 1966 most the of the 16th SFG HQ'd in Charleston, WV became part of the 19th . At one time or another the 19th has had units in Rhode Island, New York, North Carolina, West Virginia, Colorado, Maryland, Montana,& Utah.

The 20th Grp was oringinally (61) HQ'd Homewood, AL, moved to Birmingham in 63.
Parts of the 20th have been located in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana (the Coonass Gang), North Carolina and Rhode Island.

At one time I compiled a complete list of all
SF units and locations (including all detatchments), but I don't have access to it at the moment due to computer problems, so please fill in locations I missed.

Good info above. In regards to wartime missions:

11th Group was a backup to 10th Group. Most teams had wartime missions (a group of them) in Eastern Europe. As an example, ODA232 (c/2/11th SFGA) had as one mission option to conduct Strategic Recon in East Prussia.

12th Group was a backup to 7th Group. At least some of their wartime missions were related to Cuba.

A better term (and correct term)than back up unit would be "Sister units"

The Reserve compopnents of SFG's were a vital and active part of the Active duty SFG's.

On almost every deployment I went on while in 7th SF, there was some representation from 20th SFG. Regardless of mission.

Now 20th Group's AO has been expanded into the Carribian and Europe to compensate for the deactivation of some of the other reserve component SFG's.

IIRC, 12th's mission was the PacRim.

3rd Bn was up & down the West Coast.

Maybe different 12th Battalions had different AOs? I knew some folks in 12th Florida way, and I'm sure they had Cuba wartime missions (at least as possibles). This was mid-80s.

As a former member of C Co 12th SFGA (LOL E19) in LA. We did have a wartime assignment.Without naming names or seeing the actual "war plan" it involved parachuting/infitrating into a certain country known to have nuclear weapons (assuming of course that this was the big one) and doing Strat Recons of the Missle sites. I am sure there were other missions... but our focus was Strat Recon and FID while I was there. And if you heard our Batt CO you would think our mission was to behave like good little boys as we were always in trouble for something LOL

The 20th Group used to also cover North Africa. This predates my involvement with the 20th GRP, but an FOB was stood up in Italy (I think) with teams deploying to various nations in N Africa for FID.

Currently, we handle the Carribbean, Central and South America, and Europe. Not bad for us "Weekend Warriors." We (3/20) were re-organized several years ago and picked up a company made up from the 11th Group. I don't know if other battalions in my Group or the 19th did the same thing or not.

My former Detachment SGT was in the 11th in NY state, and he routinely deployed to England and Norway.
