I met a man named Bill Taffer, who claimed he was in Army Special Forces (70's-80's ???), I have no reason not to believe him, but was just curious.

You could start by asking him what group he was in. Then ask him what his MOS was (Most of SF falls into the 18 series but we also have 91B4S guys who are medics) Ask him what DZ's he jumped into at Bragg, Should be mostly St. Mere Eglise, Holland, Normandy and once in a while Sicily. He should know the names of all the DZ's at Bragg! He should also know the name of the hospital there. Come back here with his answers and we'll tell you if he's been there and done that.

I did ask him what group he was in and he stated "Special Forces", and I found that a little odd, when I asked him which specific Group based on geo regions he looked at me blankly, either as if he was busted or that he was surprised that I was asking questions that he didnt expect me to, but maybe he didnt want to tell me. He then said he was in a unit created by the Reagan Admin that operated with 10 man teams in Central and South America, he said he was at Grenada, Panama, Nicaragua, etc. He even said they all had regular jobs but were called into action by there Capt. when needed. (SFNG or Reserve?)Well I started to smell bs, but his family all claims it is true and he even was in the local paper years ago for succesfully breaking into a utilites plant to test their security. He looks the part, knows various pressure points (I know cause he put me into a serious hold), and has some very intersesting stories; all which seem beleivable. I know that most phonies have all the cool stories and knowledge, but something is telling me he is real. Maybe a support guy? I don't know. I have no reason to doubt his claims, but their seems to be some curious inconsistencies. I am very close to enlisting in the Navy under the SEAL Challenge and would like an experienced mentor to help guide and motivate me. I want to know if this guy is the real deal. Thanks for any reply.

Tell him I think he is full of it and to post here to prove me wrong. As for enlisting under the SEAL challenge I think you would be better served to look for a Mentor with Real World SEAL experiance.

I agree with RangerHazen. A lot of South American opns went on in that era, but no one worked "regular jobs and were called into action by their Captain...." Pure BS. If he claims to be SF, then he was in a Group or assigned to a project. There is a very slim possibility that he was Agency, but if he was, he wouldn't be selling that kind of horse dung.

Shoot me an email. Give me any more info you might have.
I'm not starting a phony check service, but the AO's he's claiming, CA and SA fall in my backyard.
In the mean time I would start looking for another mentor. I don't like the way this guy talks.

I spent some time with SOCSO in Panama which was the control HQS for most of the stuff he alludes to. Sounds like a BS story to me. Most of the folks down there who weren't in SOCSOUTH proper, were in the 3d BN 7th SFG at Kobbe. Other types down there were DEA and Customs Reps. And of course, agency types.

Hi FSU,
I've been around enough SF Operators to tell you that not a darn one of them will ever tell you where they've been, what they've done, or to whom they've done it. It's not your business if you haven't been there and done that you don't/won't really know. It's hard when your looking at a monitor to get a feel for someone but most SF people that I know are very good judge's of character and can see right through a wannabe when they're looking them in the face.
Best thing to do is to find a real deal introduce them to each other and get the hell out of the way. If he's not real the emt's will take care of the cleanup if he is you'll probably hear a great conversation and see how beer is consumed "professionally"

We have two of our BTDT's that live and work in Tallahassee. One left 5th GRP to go to us (and finish school at FSU) and the other is in on the Tally PD's SWAT team. Both are fine men with outstanding reputation's.
One thing posers just don't understand is that there are a lot of BTDT's out there. Sooner or later, they'll run into one and have their bluff called.
Try to dig up some more info and let us know what's been said. Maybe down the road, I can arrange a meeting.
Take care fsu_surfer and find another mentor. I think this guys' FOS.
Eric
(Not a BTDT per se, but I support a lot of really good ones.)

That should be easy enough to verify.
Ask him when he did that (get the month and year), then check the archives at the newspaper. Most papers will let you search their stuff for free. If not, send me an email. I can easily look into it. I know the reporter "secret handshake" http://www.socnetcentral.com/ubboard/biggrin.gif.

Just be careful when you do this. If I remember right there was a Sailor who said he was with the SEALS. His home town news paper printed that he was wonded in the GULF behind emeny lines. The paper made it sound like he was a real HERO...He was a Boson on a ship. Some how he got busted and was sent to SBU that worked directly with that team...
Don't belive everything you read when Spec Op's are involed...
To give you a little story about Somillia. Look and see who landed on the BEACH with the cameras rolling and the DO RAGS on the heads...( We had a good laugh about that at the SHOOT) QUOTE"Please stand back. Get the cameras out of our face." Reporter" Who are you? US forces?" Other "We are NAVY SEALS. Get back!!!!" In every history book written and even taught in some college classes people think it was the SEALS... The REAL DEALS know who it was... LOL :P
So don't belive everything you read either.
RAT OUT!!!
