Met him at breakfast this morning in a restaurant. Name is Joe Cochis. Said they called him "The Indian". Went into SF in 1962 and was there for many years. He gave me contact info if anyone wants to look him up.

Hey Shark I met an old SF'er that went in in 57 by the name of Joe Q. Salas, CSM (Ret.) in Guam in 92. I had written to him when I was in 9th Grade and he was in Nha Trang, soldier pen pal program.
I remember him speaking to me in 92 of friends of his he had been in with and specifically remember him mentioning, the name "Cochise".
Probably won't help but, it's info for you.

That's probably him. He did say that he also went by the name of Cochise although he looked white to me. He definitely had that meat-eating look in his eyes. Retired as an O-4 and was pissed off that, according to the US Army, he was too old to go kill something. Said he wanted a battalion of 82nd guys to take over there and get some. We had a good conversation....LOL

I believe it. Salas was the same way after several nights at the VFW with him I took on a new way of drinking and listening!!!!
I have no doubt that the beautiful island of Guam is always going to be safe with the retired SF guys over there. They probably served together between Smoke Bomb Hill and Nam. It seems that back in those days there were so few SF personnel they all knew each other right up until about 70 - 75 then I think they either started getting out or retiring and losing contact with one another.?
Real great feelings though when you sit down and really listen to some of these guys the way they trained and the equipment they used back then...
