Not a clue; but I know it's been used since the '50s.

IN the 80s, SOCOM put out a directive on operation names:

Two words.
First word was the sponsor.
Second word was for that particular operation.

For Example: In 1985, any operation directed by 1st SOCOM used the word CASINO. 5th Group got involved in LTD training ops that SOCOM sponsored. They were called CASINO GAMBIT I, II, III, etc.

Each unit subordinate to SOCOM got a set of sponsor code words for ops they ran. These changed yearly.

I don't have a clue either, but I think you are incorrect that the name was used back in the 50's.

I thought the name Robin Sage had something to do with Robin Moore?

If I recall correctly, Robin Moore went through the SF Officer's Course; and their FTX was called ROBIN SAGE. He went through in '62(?). The enlisted FTX was called something else at the time. I do know that when we changed the SFOC to a Phase 2 course, ROBIN SAGE became the 'official' exercise name for Phase 3.

BTW, I found out the hard way about the operation code words when I was organizing the support for the first HAHO course. I had to go to SGM Pappy Jones and sign for a code word designation. By the time I got the list for 1988 in December 87, 52 operations were code-worded(sp) for CY 88 already. So I got CAB (5th Group) for sponsor and ACRE for the operation; the 53d operation scheduled for 5th Group. Now THAT is a high op-tempo!
