View Full Version : BMF- advice?
Female who is not USMC and not an 03
23 February 2003, 02:25
Mid-way through my officer package, it got held up for medically administrative (DODMERB) reasons.
Now I am approaching my commissioning date and am STUCK as a SWOrrior. I have a pretty decent ranking, so I can choose both ship type and port... but a SWOrrior nonetheless.
PT scores (in OCT) were as follows: (9:03, 92, 106, 16, 8:54) (female, btw)
Question, now...
All I want to do is EOD. Period. Should I resign the commission and opt in enlisted? I don't mind the pay cut- or having to go through boot.
Just needed an experienced/ objective opinion on the matter.
Thanks, in advance, for any advice.

Tough call. Some people have had luck going SWO first and then trying to laterally convert. I think it's do-able but difficult.
I am enlisted so I'm not completely up on all the SWO crap so you're best bet is to email the 1140 community manager for guidance.
As far as being EOD goes: If you want to operate for any length of time as an EOD tech- enlisted is the only way to go. Our EOD officers really only spend about 3-4 years as an operator. Then it's of to staff/ops jobs. Enlisted techs can spend up to 15+ years as an operator. The pay isn't nearly as nice, nor is the day to day treatment but it all comes down to what you want to do. I'd do this job for free (shhhh!) but they'd have to pay me a lot more to be an admin commando.
As a side note. I may be away from the computer for a while. I'll check the site when I'm back. JW is out there somewhere so ask away and we'll try to hook you guys up.

FYI. I am a SWO-lat transfer to EOD. Took me two tries. Can be done but is competitive. I am now a Reservist partially because I saw that I'd be behind a desk after making O-4.
Agree with all above...JW ( I was on a det with him for a short time) will tell you that I have said often that I wish I had enlisted. I'd probably still be on active duty. So I agree that you will get more pure EOD stuff as an Enlisted. But, be ready to accept a job in the fleet if you are unable to complete training for whatever reason (Medical, academics, etc.) If you'd rather drive the ship than paint it...maybe you should go O.
Also know that as a female there are some restrictions on the billets that you can hold. I had a female on my det who was good -to- go but she was unable to go with us on some missions. For example we deployed on small boys that were not female -equipped and they would not let her go...it hurt her a little through no fault of her own.
Good luck.
