how can you know if someone is posing as a Ranger? I know this guy who says he served in the Regiment, but i get the feeling he's a poser.

Tough one.
There are a few subtle things you can ask, but if I post them here, who says the same wanna be won't read 'em. Here's a couple that might work.Post his answers anbd we'll clarify them.
1. Ask him where RIP was conducted (as in the area and the post) and what year, then post his response and we'll sort it out.Ther was atime before Regt existed when RIP was at the actual Bns. Then it was moved to Benning at a cnetral site, and then those buildings were bulldozed (goodbye Downing Mile)and the RIP AO was moved again.
2. If he was in 3rd Bn, ask him what year and where the barracks were. They've moved once that I know of to the complete opposite ends of Benning. Also, if he was in 3rd Bn, ask him if there was a fence up around the AO. Ther was a time after they moved across post that there wasn't.
If he was in 1st or 2nd Bn, I can't really help out, but I'm sure some of the others can. You could always coin him. Even if you don't know what that means, he should.Or even ask him to recite the creed. We never forget it, ever.

Try coining his @ss. If he returns with some poge coin or looks at you like your stupid, then hes a phony.

You find these types everywhere! It is tough sometimes because of the affiliations between the RTB and REGT. EVERYBODY has a Ranger buddy who was in BATT and has heard enough stories to sound legitimate. Here is a couple of suggestions... 1. Coin checks dont always work because I know alot of my fellow Rangers who "Just dont Carry' em" 2. Ask them their Ranger school class # and then suprise him by getting on the RTB website and have him point out his picture in the class gallery! 3. Nonchalantly ask him who the Regt CSM and CO were? you can then confirm this through sources on this net. 4. This is probably a BIGGY... I have not met a HOOAH yet who doesnt have Hooah pictures of his time spent in the REGT or a going away plaque on his wall. ask him to see his pictures. If the s@#!bag says shit like "all the stuff we did was secret" or " no pictures of the compound or ops/deployments were allowed" HE IS LYING! And lastly, 5. You can always ask to see his DD214 and other documentation such as orders to the REGT etc. Any Ranger who served in the regt will be able to produce factual material without hesitation. For any 2nd Batt Q's mail me at alohanick@earthlink.net Good Luck Nick

How does the whole coin thing work? Are y'all sure you have to be a Ranger to have one?
LRSC Grunt

Coins are given for "atta boy" awards for something less than what a medal such as an AAM or ArCom. You can also buy them. Almost every unit in the army has its own minted coin, it shows where you came from.
For the history try this URL:

For coin rules try this URL:

I use my coin(2/502nd Inf) to ward off recruiters when they bug me. I lead them on then......bang!!! Coin check!!! Make them look stupid in front of their recruites. They deserve it, cant they tell im prior service active and in the guard by my high and tight and blue cord hanging on my rear view mirror.
SURGEON GENERALS WARNING:
Impersonating a Ranger or carrying around a Ranger coin that wasnt awarded to you, can be hazzardous to your health and personal safety.

Having a coin proves nothing. They are sold by thousands of vendors to anyone who is willing to pay for one. SF, Ranger, CIA, SOG, etc, etc.

E19 is absolutely correct! That is why I stated previously that I know many a Hooah who does not carry a coin because what does it prove? They would just as soon buy the pitcher of frosty malted goodness and share it with a NEW Ranger Buddy.

So if a Ranger can tell me if he was in Iran in 1980, Grenada in 1983, Panama in 1989, Iraq in 1990, then it is not secret? Hints like this can tell me Delta Force was there also.
Thanks.

Ok..as far as coins go...yes vendors DO sell them...BUT OFFICIAL coins are the ONLY ones wtih a Serial number on them..so look on the edge of the coin, if it has a phone number on it..it is PHONY if it has a seriel number of 3 or 4 numbers it is at the very least a legit RGT coin. Now he may not have earned it..but that coin's point of origin was from a BN.
If he was in 1st batt as him what barracks he stayed in, if he was in 2d ask him the gross average yearly rain fall and how it affects the use of a Gustav as per the number of rounds that may be safley fired per minute. Then ask him the size of Col Darby's boot size. Post THOSE answers and we will know the truth...and of course the FINAL question..what was the name of Francis Marion's "War Mule".
Legit Rangers...keep you're mouths shut on this one..and no Im not crazy.

I asked about the coin because I haven't made it to a Batt YET (Hell, I don't ship out til 01Feb) and I was already given a coin. So that is a bad thing?
P.S.- It has a 5 digit serial # (first digit is 0).

I was in 1st Batt. There is only 1 person that I know of that has been to all those places. He has since retired and, last I heard, he was in Kosovo. If this guy that you met doesn't answer to the name of "Doc", then he is a liar.
This person that you've met has claimed to be on missions for different companies in 1st Batt.
Eagle Claw (Iran) was C co. 1/75
Desert Storm was B co (with a few others) 1/75
If you could, send me his name and when he was in, I will try to verify it.

My NEW 3d batt coin, released over the summer has four didgets and it is very new. One of the first 100 stamped. So no, it doesnt have 5 numbers as yours does, but thank you for adding to my post in case the guy has a coin with 5. Still though, be wary of telephone numbers stamped onto the edge.

Yes, the serial numbered coins add a little credibility. However, if you just happened to lose your original Sterling Silver, Pre-Panama, numbered coin while hanging upsidedown, drunk, off the bow rail of a Bertram yacht, while ferrying it down Long Island Sound in 1990...Then the commercial one will have to do:-)

That day could have well been the worst day in my life, I was suckin pretty bad in my bran new boots!!

Pull-Dick is OVER! Don't even get me started on the absurdness of sending Batt Boys, or graduates of the course to this worthless waste of time and money!!!!!! Have fun in KS, and buy a round from me, you'll get it back in the future. By the way, if you didn't get my landline # that I mailed, let me know. Meph- it was your last 30 miler...so quit the whining:-) No, I was in the above mentioned useless school at the time...wishing, along with the other Hooahs, that we WERE doing a 30 miler instead!

Suppose you see someone with the Ranger tab, would that mean he served in the RGT? Is wearing the Ranger scroll authorized after leaving the RGT to other units?

Hi Ted,
When did Doc retire? He has a long list of accomplishments, to include his mug on the cover of "LIFE" and he was also requested by President Reagan to be one of his personal medics, he said "no thanks" and stayed in Bn.
He was one of the greatest guys I've ever known.

Mike,
The tab only indicates that a soldier has completed Suck School; it has no bearing on whether he was in Rgt or not. A case where someone who was in Rgt would wear the scroll after leaving would be if it were worn as a combat patch on the right sleeve of his uniform. Other than that, I can't think off-hand of a situation where a former Rgt member could officially wear his scroll after leaving the unit.
RKW
28 December 1999, 22:14
When the patch is on the right sleeve, does that mean that it is the former unit?
RKW

28 December 1999, 22:29
RKW,
An SSI from a unit that the individual served in combat with may be worn on the right sleeve. If the individual has served with more than one unit in combat he may wear any one (only one at at a time) of those SSI's on the right sleeve. Individual skill tabs (SF or Ranger) are not authorized
for wear on the right sleeve.

The 75th Ranger Regiment is not part of the JSOC. The 75th is part of USSOCOM. Parts of the 75th do work for JSOC but the entire 75th Ranger Regiment DOES NOT fall under JSOC.

A kid who lives next door to me in school said he once was hanging out with (drinking with) some guy who said he was ex-Ranger. The guy said that his "training " as a Ranger involved going to Colombia and killing some drug dealers. He also supposedly said he didn't like being a Ranger because, supposedly, all your family gets if you die is a letter. This is ALL the info I have, nothing more, and I don't really know what to make of it, so I'd like to hear what you guys have to say about this. Thanks.
