I posted this in GEARNET, but assumed it would be more relevant here. I have a question for all the military BTDT's out there. I am putting together a hunting kit setup and, being non military was wondering if anyone could tell me how to mount the nylon sheath for the strobe on Alice suspenders, the sheath comes with a wierd lacing system, I don't see how that can be used to mount on suspenders. I assume that the Quartermaster maybe sews it on with heavy duty nylon thread?? If someone could help me out and give me instructions or where I can get it mounted or if anyone is military and would let me send them it and give them a small "finders fee" i'd be greatful. Thanks

Shurefire,

A technique if you are going to have the military style 1 qt. canteens is to sew the strobe case onto the outer surface of the canteen carry case. This would be the convex side of the case when the canteen is in side. I have done this myself and find it very secure and easy to get to.

Another option and some what pricey ($32.00-35.00) is to purchase thorugh Blackhawk industires a 1 qt. canteen carry case with the strobe case integarted onto it.
That is of course if you intend to have canteens on the harness.

Now reading your question more closely I see "alice suspenders" is this for placement on a ruck I assume. If so I have not seen a secure way that would prevent the strobe case from sliding up and down along the straps.

Not to insult your intelligence the weird lacing would have to be undone and the case placed around the alice suspenders [if it is an LBE (load bearing equipemnt) suspender that we are talking about], then relaced as if you were laceing a set of boots snugging it down everyn two or three lacings. It still may slide up/down and wear some what odd. This is the most inexpensive way.

Sorry for the long winded reply and I hope I was of some assistance

Thanks Cecil for your help, but yes I have tried to lace it on and cinch it as tight as I can but the darn thing slips up and down. The reason i ask this is because I have seen so many pictures of Hoo ahs with the SDU-5 sheath someone attached to their ALICE Suspenders. I have never thought of sewing it onto the Canteen pouch, that is a damn good idea, but I would prefer it on the suspenders, we'll see if anyone else can lend me some assistance.

Shurefire,

A second suggestion would be to remove the ALICE suspender of choice and have the strobe case sewn onto the suspender. It may be a viable solution.

hi shurefire

here are afew more suggestions that have worked for me in the past. first dx that white twine that comes standard on your strobe case an reppace it with some gutted 550 cord. relace the strobe case around your LCE suspender strap but run the top loop of cord through the little brass loop thats sewn to your LCE. this will keep the strobe from sliding down the strap. another option is to lace it as you did before but wrap a strip of 100 mile an hour tape around the strobe case to secure it. when you do this you must be careful not to tape it too tightly to prevent you from easily removing your strobe.

finally, you can always tape your strobe case to your fixed blade knife sheath which should be worn on your pants/rigger belt so you knife/strobe becomes part of your line 1 gear meaning its always on your person even if you are separated from your LCE. in my opinion it is also better to carry your compass around your neck on 550 cord or double looped through a button hole on your BDU blouse.

hope this helps...take care

Shurefire,

I'm not sure if you're planning on carrying a ruck or not while hunting, but if you are, you may want to put the strobe somewhere other than your shoulder. I always tried to keep my shoulders/suspenders clean so I could easily don/doff my ruck without it hanging up on stuff. I liked the canteen cover idea myself, except you wanted to sew it on the forward side (side closest to your front) so it didn't get a hole worn in it every time you sat down or leaned against something. I eventually had the pouch sewn onto my tac vest for it, but started experimenting with putting it in a sleeve pocket sewn onto my shirt to keep it as line 1 gear, as Rakkisan explained.

Thanks to all three of you guys who helped me out. It is truely appreciated, they were all fantastic recomms, I will see what I can do. You're right Razor, I will most likely be humping a ruck so mounting it on the suspenders won't be an option anymore. I'm gonna go work on it right now and see what i like. Thanks again,
Jay
