Anybody into this shit besides me? I'm a big fan of UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) and PRIDE. Nothing quite like a good 'ole ass kicking be it in a cage or ring. Good shit.

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/Muay Thai shit is taking off, too. Anybody else into it?

My other most favorite site on the web...

http://www.sherdog.net

What are your thoughts on the Tank vs. Mir "fight"?

I think the promoters kinda messed that one up. Mir is a great fighter but that was a total mis-match. I think that Tank would've put the hurt on him if he wouldn't have fell for the ground-n-pound.

RagNar2/75

Mir pisses me off with all his shit talk after the fight.

I was really hoping tank would lay a beating on him, just like Freeman did.

By the way, I'm a card carrying fuckin' sherdogger. What's your handle over there?

I'm not hard enough to be a registered user over there :p

I haven't registered yet mainly just been "trollin".

I loved Tank's comment after the fight how Mir could come and "talk it over" in the bar. I guarantee that didn't occur!!

And what about that new Heavyweight belt holder, what's up with that shit? How does one fight on your record get you into contention for a "title" match? I kinda want to call BS on that one but...whatever.

What's your take on Bas Rutten's new training book/system?

RagNar2/75
9 March 2003, 23:08
The UFC Heavyweight division is piss poor. There are about ten HW's in PRIDE that could easily hold the UFC belt as well.

Pride's biggest downfall is lack of weight classes, in my opinion.

I don't know anything about Rutten's books or tapes, although they've gotten good reviews. He's the fuckin' man. haha

Nice website.

I'm opening one here under Marcelo. He's doing a seminar with us on the 23'rd and 24th of this month.

Are you guys Gracie barra or Carlson side, for the most part? The bjj politics get fucking retarded at times.

On this site we usually discuss these things in the unarmed combat section.

Frogstyle on here trains with Din Thomas. e5wsf trains in BJJ at a Caique affiliated school. Two weeks ago I spent the weekend training with Frank Shamrock. I study Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Frank Cucci (four stripe brown belt under Pedro Sauer and trains with Rickson Gracie) and Muay Thai under Pat Tray (Kru under Ajarn Chai Sirisute) at the Trident Academy.

http://www.tridentacademy.org

I didn't catch UFC 41 unfortunately since ComCast told me it was cancelled due to the weather when I tried to order it (Bastards!). But I do know one thing, I'm pissed at the rumor that Murillo Bustamante isn't coming back to defend his title.

Ha. I didn't even know there WAS a hand to hand combat forum.

You guys hear about Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic fighting Bob Sapp in both K-1 and MMA rules? Cro Cop by vicious KO, says I.

Daredevil
10 March 2003, 12:19
It's on here, it gets a lot less traffic, but since there are MMA fans from all services it's a good choice.

Sapp is a beast! I know Cro-Cop is tough but he'll have is work cut out for him.

I just read an interview with Liddell. He says after Ortiz he wants a shot at Silva. That's one I'd like to see. Silva's record against anything other than tomato cans is a little shaky. I don't know if Liddell will beat Ortiz, but I'm pretty sure he'll school Silva.

I have a question for you guys, is it useful for a small guy like myself (5'9", 140) to learn brazillian jiu-jitsu, or it is just making it easier for big guys to kill me?

Reaper375

One style does it for me.

Shootfighting.

There's basically 2 ways to win. Knock your opponent out, or make him tap out. There usually aren't time limits. They keep going 'till either of the two happens.

I'm fighting my best friend in a couple months. I'll let you know how it goes. Last tourney I had I knocked out my opponent in about 15 minutes. Open-palm strike to his ear and shocked his neuro. Went down like a sack of shit. Went to put him into an achilles hook but he was out cold.

Shootfighting is good because it's useful in the real world. Every move can be utilized to its full potential. For instance: in a tourney, an achilles hook or leg lock will just hurt a lot and force your opponent to twist or tap out. In the REAL world, it would rip his knee out of socket and let it hang by a few strands of tendon. Useful to keep him down and get away.

Far as I know, Tracy's Karate is the only one who teaches it. It was started by Bart Vale (Knocked Ken Shamrock out cold) a few years ago.

10 March 2003, 22:41
yeah he's one tough guy, when i lived in CT i went to tracy's and went to 4 of Bart Vale's training seminars. You should check out some of his highlight tapes of him winning in japan. Definitly learned quite abit. Thats one of the things i loved about bat is that they do that shit there, I loved every minute of it.

Here is my two cents....

I retired last year as a boxer/mma fighter. I have 26 fights. three losses. My last fight I was KO'd by Dokojunisuki Mishima in Osaka Japan. I got beat down on Pay Per View. My other loss of note was to Barret Yoshida.
Having said that my only win against a bad ass was a Ko over Helio Soneca of Gracie Barra.

I have trained at Relson Gracie in Ohio and Hawaii. I have trained at HMC under Haru Shimanishsi. I trained with my good frien Din Thomas. Also American Top Team on occasion.
In boxing I worked out under AL STankie at LA Boxing and was on Team Famosos Hernandez. I trained and lived with Roberto Duran in the summer of 2001.
I won the Cup of the Americas in Panama City in 2001. A boxing tournament held throughout Latin America.
In Panama I am known as Mallo Gringo...

I am entertaining fight offers but there just isnt any money in it...

So,
My opinion is this...

If you are a civilian and you are seriously concerned with the need to train in self defense, I recommend:

1. Moving
2. Stop being an asshole
3. Gun safety course and a decent GLOCK

If your job requires a potential altercation I would train specificly for that threat. For example, AIr Marshalls may need to practice absolutely shutting someone down in a space the size of a telephone booth. A cop need focus on weapon retention and making distance between the bad guy and himself in order to make a clean shot.
A soldier practicing hand to hand would be far better off rehearsing the million other tasks he needs on the battlefield. I only know one SEAL who ever went toe to toe. ONE.
Lift weights. Hit first. Keep hitting.

Be ALERT.

Soneca...he a short guy? I take BJJ under Marcelo Alonso (a 3rd degree black belt under Carlson), and he brought a Gracie Barra guy down for a seminar named Soneca (So-no-kee-ah). I wonder if it's the same guy...he definately liked working from the guard.

Man...you need to give Din a slap on the back for schooling Serra on why you need to be a well-rounded fighter. When they announced the initial decision, I almost shit myself. It would have been a huge robery, considering Din controlled the WHOLE fight. Fortunately, the decision was corrected.

I'm also a HUUUUGE Duran fan. I just got into boxing recently thanks to this Puerto Rican coconut in my platoon that I became good buddies with, and we sit around and watch old Duran fights all the time.

Shit, I didn't know there was a BON-U-FIIIIIED MMA fighter on these boards. GOOD stuff, man. If you keep fighting, keep me posted. Especially if you're on PPV again.

Thats the same Soneca.. Nice guy...

I lived in Durans house all that summer. We went back and forth to Miami all the time. He is a very unstable and lovable guy.

Its surreal. We went to dinner after training one night with Mike Tyson.

AND listen to this shit. the fax machine broke at the house and he sent his daughter Irichelle to fax some paper work. It was late. Where did she go? Kinkos?
NO... The WHite House in Panama and used the Vice Presidents fax.
Duran runs that country.

Yeah, I think I know who you are then. heh

I love the whole concept of the American Top Team. Fucking sweet. I wanted Din to kick Uno's ass so bad...He almost had him a few times early in the fight. ESPECIALLY that triangle. God damn, man. I was wanting to see him and BJ bang for the title.

Didn't the ATT bring in Shannon Briggs to help with the boxing? Din definately showed some standup skills in that fight against Serra. Serra had NO answer for those jabs, man. It was a sweet fight.

ANYWAY....I hope "Cro Cop" kicks the shit outta Sapp. Sapp beat an over-the-hill Hoost, and that last fight was bullshit anyway. Hoost woulda made it to the bell, and Sapp wouldn't be able to walk much longer. Shit, they had to carry him from the ring.

I also think Vanderlei gets shit on for fighting poor opponents. Yeah, he's scrapped a few cans lately, but fuck...he doesn't do the match making. He whipped Dan Henderson's ass, and Hendo is the fuckin' man. Those Chute Boxe guys are fuckin' monsters, and I LOVE watching them fight. Except when Ninja beat Sperry. That sucked. hehe

Doctor_Doom, if you're a smaller guy bjj is definately the way to go. It's one of the few legit fighting styles that will give you a fighting chance against a larger guy. Overall, though...go with what froggystyle said. Carry a nice piece of heat.

Man, that's fucking wild. Duran SHOULD run that country. He's the SHIIIIIIIT. My buddy Rivera is such a big Duran fan that he's almost gone and whipped another Ranger's ass for making a "No Mas" joke. We seriously had to hold him back...which is pretty funny in retrospect.

Interestingly enough BJ Penn was at my house Monday night after the flight back for dinner. Renato Verissimo is staying here right now.
Din has been training with Mike Bell for a year now. He is the BEST Thai coach I have worked with. He is in Orlando.
Briggs was purchased by ATT in large part to bring more attention to MMA. Briggs works with them a little bit. Not too much though.
Dins benefactor got him a 10,000 dollar a night hotel room after the fight! No shit.

Thanks RagNar, but as a doctor and former surgery resident I don't think I can carry a piece. No need anyway. It's just that recently I was in a situation where I had no choice but to fight, and even though I was able to come out on top, I was lightly injured, and it could have been much much worse. So I'm looking for something that will give me a good chance should that situation arise again. I'll look into BJJ.

Thanks!

I'm just admittedly not a big Chuteboxe fan. I'm more of a Brazilian Top Team guy myself. I think they're the best team in MMA and Bustamante is one of my favorite fighters.

Speaking of BTT and Nog, what's everyone's opinion on Nog vs Fedor?

I heed that. Yet, silly as it sounds, I constantly picture the struggle over the knife in Saving Private Ryan. I don't want to be the guy on the bottm crying,"No, no, wait, wait, wait." I shudder.
