View Full Version : Recruiting
Hi guys,
I talked an Army Recruiter today, I talked to him about joining the National Guard or Active Army and all. He told me that the Army only has so many options, which seems logical, but he said that getting a RGV4 contract and lots of money for college isn't really possible. Whats the truth to this? They also said reserves are better than the NG as far as money for college goes. Also, I havent had any real recruiter talks, just those guys who stop by my school. So if you guys have any tips, Id be grateful.
Thanks,
RKW

Have you talked to a guard recruiter yet?
There are some contract options that are mutually exclusive. I believe, but am not certain, that the Airborne/Ranger contract and Station of Choice are not available if you take the 40K college cash. You still get 19(?)K for school. And the 11X enlistment bonus (12K, last time I heard) wont let you take an RGV4. Here's a tip, go to the recruiter, ask him, write down what he says. Wait a couple of days, call the station, ask to speak to one of the -other- recruiting NCO's. Ask him the same questions, if they dont match up, there is BS on the loose. Above all, IF IT AINT MENTIONED -EXPLICITLY- on your contract, IT DOES NOT EXIST IN YOU FUTURE. Verbal promises are worthless. Benning DS's will attack if you spout "But, my recruiter said.....". You are now warned.

I have an 11X RGV4 Contract, with it I got a $9000 signing bonus and $40000 from the Army College Fund after I get out to finish up college, make of those amounts as you will, the $40K is more than I'll need to finish up college ( already have 40 credits ). Just remember the guys who actually handle the contracts are the guys at MEPS that's where you'll hammer out your stuff, don't take anything but what you want and they'll eventually find it for you.
Hope it helps,
Mac
LRSC,
Have I haven't gone into a NG recruiting office yet, but I have spoken with the recruiters who stray around the mall. There is LRS where I live. Can I enlist directly to this NG unit? Ive heard I can. Its also the closest infantry unit to me, long drive to next closest. I think I'll pay the NG recruiter a visit tomorrow.
If anyone can help with this, what things should I ask for in my contract? Is it possible to get Airborne, Ranger, etc? Can I make sure in my contract that I enlist as an 11B? Can I guarentee schools, and also get signing bonuses, and money for college in the NG?
Also, the recruiter said, that while in the Army, I can attend college courses, getting something like 60+ credit hours during my enlistment. Is this so in a Ranger Battalion? With their training schedule, I would assume not. He told me that the army would pay for 75% of the tuition during my enlistment?
Also, Im 16. I turn 17 in 5 months. Ive heard the earliest I could enlist is a week before my 17th birthday. I also need something like a parental waiver form if I enlist at 17 I belive. Whats the Army policy on this?
Sorry for being so long winded, and thanks for all the help guys,
RKW

You have assumed correctly. I will wager that your recruiter holds a basket-weaving MOS and knows not what he is talking about.

Contact the LRS unit directly. Ask to speak with their recruiter. See what they would be willing to offer you. The LRS may most likely get ARB slots. Get that in your contract if at possible. In the reserve component, unless you get it up front, your chances of going later are close to nil...
I stood up and walked out of MEPS when they told me "no airborne". They stopped me, and somehow, miraculously got me the school. But only because they found and Airborne unit for me... All other HOOAH schools will come in time... Get the Airborne first if possible.
