550 cord holds... 550 lbs... barely.
You can use it for ANYTHING! Shoe Laces, tent line, converting your poncho into a hooch you can think of what you need rope or string for... 550 cord. It is an essential for use in the field. You can even take the internal cords out and use them for low weight jobs. You just have to remember to burn the ends when you cut it.
Only thing you can't do with that stuff is rappel.

Word of caution, strip the internal cords from the outer sheath if your attaching anything to your body with it, shoelaces, knife sheaths, etc.

Xdeth do you mean if i use 550 cord to tie anything up to my body its better safety wise to take out the inside strands so it breaks away just in case and does not hurt me or anyone

That is correct. Nothing like securing your ID tags with a piece of non-gutted 550 and then having them get caught on the jump door of a C130. Your body and parachute are going out...your head is not....

Well about half and half.
Buddy of mine from Force taught me that I should leave the guts in the 550 cord in my boots. If one ends up in a survival situation the guts can be used for fising line or animal snares. He's now the company Gunny for 2nd Force so I guess he knows what he's talking about. There's other places I use it ungutted that I see alot of guys using gutted. If I need something to break away, like my ID card holder, I put in a short loop of dog tag chain. I refuse to be a towed jumper.
The gutted version also allows for a flat wrap if you're using it for a handle cover.

You should be able to get it at an Army Navy store. It's either called 55- Cord, Parachute Cord, or Para Cord.

I bought 200 feet of it at the gun show! That'd be enough for a platoon for a week in the field, but it's enough to last me till judgement day!

Guys in my unit hord the stuff. Our supply guy gets like one roll and says "well that should hold you(the whole company) for a year". Guess that's probably right for an NG unit that has no idea what field craft is. Still pisses me off to see these shitheads with it braided through their boonies and on everything they own thryin' to look "high speed".
