View Full Version : Question for the Batt. boys

I've been noticing that around Batt. their are some really big guys. Whats the word on roids there, do they test? Are they used by alot of people? And how is that looked at by the guys there?
Ranger002

Don't ask don't tell my friend.Piss tests occur often and if you need that shit to get an edge why then off to leg land you must go.
ROIDS are a NO GO Ranger!
William Hazen B 2/75 Ranger 1979-82
Thats weird, when I was in batt there were very few "Big guys" there. They had the most trouble keeping up. When I was there most rangers were tall and skinny although we did have a few short stocky guys around. Those big muscular guys usually suffered more than anyone on a run or a roadmarch. I guess times have changed.

Ditto on the no "big guys". Seems they just couldn't run.

Well I'm saying what I see right now there. I'm an holdover for RIP at 75th HHC, and from the people I've talked too there seems to be more than a few poeple using them. I'm not talking about huge guys just bigger than normal. I've only really talked to like 2 or 3 people that said they used and they say it is only because they have joint pain. I was just wondering what you guy's thought about it. Thanks for the info.

Yep,
To add to the discussion I am 6'2" and weighed 200 pounds while at 2nd Batt. Since most Batt stuff is endurance ( an understatement ) related most big dudes could not hang. I really had a tough time when I was a newbie with the running. It took a while for me to get up to speed. However this illustrates another point. Being able to hang is 90% mental. Rangers can come in all shapes and sizes. The ones who stick are the ones who can hang no matter what.
William Hazen B 2/75 Ranger 1979-1983
No Roids here.

Skinny guys can run, big guys can hump. You can train on your weakness. Hanging is mental-right on. I'm no racing snake, but can hang pretty well, but the Army runs to damn much! Sprints-hell yes, but this 10 mi crap...yeah, you'll see a lot of that when it's for real. TFR, how long were the runs on Oct 3/4? Check out a WWII PT test sometime. It will smoke your bags. Roids? Far as I know, they are detected by the ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone, don't know how you'd check that in the urine. Was told by medic that they don't check anyway. Used in the right way they are safe and healthy. It all started in 90' when some Senators were worried about fairness in sports. They've gotten a bad rap and it's bullsh^t.
"By the way Senator, can you pass me the vodka and let me bum a smoke"?
Polypro
Yeah, we had a few big guys like Lamatina that were huge but for the most part poly don't you agree that most were tall, skinny, long-legged guys? It's been a long time but most of the guys who were good all-around were the lightweight skinny guys. I had a roommate at RTB who was a samoan named Avegalio (or Leo for short)and the guy was just HUGE, but he just couldn't run. You remember Leo Poly?

Roger Leo. For the most part, to me anyway, the guys represented a cross section of all body types. I mean, Thorlund, Me, Adams, Grass, Frigon, Stone, Lamatina, Lamb, Runkle, Snukis, Stankus, "Big" Smitty, etc...were bigger and not as fast. Then you had guys like Hislop and Blantz who were smaller and very quick. Yes, the small guys can run better. Just look at an elite marathoner...they're skinny little things. That is what endurance training will do to you. On the other hand, look at a spinter, they're pretty built. You need to look at what type of end product you want from your PT program, and what type of physical obstacle's you expect to face when it's for real. I think it's more of a "I'm up, he see's me, I'm down" type of sprint, or carrying your 180lb buddy to the bird, then a "10 miles...go". Then you have to think about weight. More muscle mass increases the amount you can lift and carry. No offense to my good friend, but I do not think Hislop could even lift me. I say establish a reasonable standard, 8min +/- 15 seconds seemed to work, with distances that are expected in combat, and then make the guys as big and strong as posible. Regiment was testing a more combat oriented PT program w/MSG Pickering, I don't know what the outcome was/is.

Thanks alot for the info guy's. Just wondering about the size thing because I'm 5'10 210 right now but haven't done any kind of PT for about 20 weeks(had surgery on knee) running PT that is stay in the weightroom alot. But now I have to go back and do RIP all over again and worried about the extra weight I'm carring around. Guess I'm just lucky they let me hang around long enough to do it again and not made me worldwide. But have to say I fought my ass off to stay there so far so good. But thats where the roid thing came into play helping the knee come back faster and the fat go away faster too. But again thanks.

Polypro,Whammer and Bros,
So I am a mutant hee hee. I would caution anyone with regard to Roids they are a bit more serious then the motrin we used to take as candy.I am all for getting an edge but as far as it goes why risk it? I have seen too many kids get way too dependant on the shit and the side effects ( need I mention ) are a bit more than an upset stomach.Tom Tom you do what you want but I hope the price you have to pay is not too high. I am a wanna be powerlifter ( hitting 40 this years bros!) and I am very careful with what I put in to my machine. My hero Arnold is in his 50's now and even he says with all the damage roids have done to his heart he'll be lucky to see his kids grow up. So Tom Tom please just pause and think about it.Stick to RAW MEAT we mutants find it much more beneficial!

Rebecca and Famke...yummmmmm! Agree Haze-man on the POSSIBLE negative side effects if used like your average IFBB moron. Stay on year round and HPTA shutdown WILL occur. Then again, smoke 2 packs a day year round and see what happens. Used in short cycles, under supervision (medical or other)is safe. Hell even the AMA is coming around with their positive studies on the testosterone patches for men with low T counts. Try T-mag.com for info.

Well for the most part, we were sprinting (and that word does not do our speed of running justice) like our hair was on fire short distances that seemed infinitly long. With the exception of the poor guys that had to run that mile to the stadium behind the convoy with full gear, we were running short quick distances. Endurance was the key there, but the toxic boosts of adrenaline helped.
In all I would say sprinting should be stressed more, build speed and power, and it will build endurance just as well. Long runs don't totally get rid of, but yes..cut them down. Having your troops run 7-8 miles each day with a 13 miler thrown in frequently is nothing more than a good mixture for bad knees, hips, and pissed off soldiers.

If you dont think lots of sprinting will get you injured, you have got another thing coming. Sprinting is a poor way to condition anybody...I disagree with your statements. Plenty of sprinting will do more to screw up your feet, knees and hips than distance running...its also called interval training and all runners know it is the most dangerous form of training. If you think youve got injuries now, wait until after you institute a sprinting program in your unit. LOL
There are much better ways to train for strength and explosiveness...speedstrength. Olympic weightlifting movements are one.
A better way to develop strength and speed in Rangers would be to have them do a few explosive olympic weightlifting movements. Professionally supervised. Squats, power cleans, high pulls, push presses, power snatches...develop the fast twitch muscles in the hamstrings and glutes for short speed stuff. Try to lift the weights as FAST and as explosively as possible. That is how short distance track stars work on their sprinting ability. Track stars dont run all the time for the sprint...instead they do a lot of olympic type weightlifting movements...done explosively to work on speed strength. Forget the bodybuilder crap like bench press...does nothing for speed. Arnold and the IFBB idiots are nobody to use as examples for functional, explosive speed strength. Forget about bodybuilding for any kind of athletic oriented weight training. Bodybuilder methods(T-magazine, Arnold, etc.) are just about building mass...has absolutely nothing to do with speed or explosiveness. Its about what you look like, not about functional strength.
There is a worldclass olymic weightlifting training facility located in Savannah, GA. Near the Ranger Batt at Hunter army airfield. Those OL people in Savannah are some bad hombres...and much more explosive and stronger than any bodybuilder.
Check out this website. It is a website about Al Vermeil, the strength and conditioning coach for the Chicago Bulls. He knows his shit. He is down on bodybuilding stuff(mass building) and big on olympic weightlifting (speedstrength or explosiveness) for developing real world, functional, athletic power.
Olympic weightlifting movements done explosively would also be really good as an adjunct to a good hand to hand combat and bayonet training program. Cause the OL movements would give you a base of explosive strength, that would probably help your hitting, kicking and throwing power. Punches and kicks would be faster...and harder. Speed equals power.
For example, olympic weightlifting movements would develop explosiveness or speed strength that would be very valuable when entering a building by force for CQB. Or cracking an airliner during a hijacking...the guys doing the entry would be just a wee bit faster and more explosive upon entry compared to someone who just does bodybuilder crap or calisthenics for strength. A faster entry would have to be a good thing for surprise.
http://www.vermeil.com/question.html
http://www.nba.com/bulls/00654561.html
If nothing else, do explosive high pulls to develop those fast twitch muscles in your hamstrings and glutes for speed...very safe too. Anybody can do high pulls.

Hey stick boy,
Do they deliver those magazines to you on
your "bamboo farm" with the mail? Or do you
ride your water buffalo into town and pick
them up at "Unlce Ho's Liquor for Less"?
It's a bad idea to second guess an Army
Ranger when it comes to anything about
running. Most of these guys were on their
High scholl and college track teams.
The running is how they weed you out
at RIP and Pre-Ranger and then RAP.
This is why I never considered being
one or attending Ranger school.
Today, I owe my rehab to my old Army
buddy who was baptised by the 2nd Bat
in '83.He gets me off my fat ass and out
and running or jogging or fast walking.
The sprinting thing looks intriging.
Tell you what,stick dude,I weigh 255lbs.
I'm working on getting down to 190.
I've plateau'd on my workout regimen so
I'll have my Ranger buddy come up with a
sprinting session and well see where I'm
at by 9/7.I think I can take 30lbs off,
I'll bet you a water buffalo.

Many beautiful Vietnamese girls work there...girl bartenders, go go dancers working the pole. They all fuckee fuckee very good. By day they work as fuckee fuckee girls fucking dumb ass Amerikans. By night they wear black pajamas and carry AKs and run through jungle barefoot. HAHAHAHAHA Surprise surprise Mr. Amerikan infantryman.
How about if I work it off you by shooting my AK-47 at Amerikan's feet and making you "dance?" HAHAHAHA...HOHOHOHO...So solly...Merry Fucking Christmas US Maleen.

Not to try to get in the middle of this all out word war on how to get in shape, but I used to work at a gym and train alot of people and your both on the right track kind of. You could lose the weight running, but also sprinting. For the sprinting you would want to do intreval training like sprint a lap or two than walk a lap or two and so on. When you reach a point when you can't lose anymore weight try changing up your diet since this is the main thing effecting your weight in the first place. Try high protein low to med fat and low carb, if it doesn't work or when you hit the wall again but always keep your protein high and the other's in a med to low range. Meal replacements are a good thing to try too, or soy protein powder. Met-rx put's out a good fat burner called thermo-core cheap and easy. Hope this is of some help. But on the running thing I wouldn't sec. guess the Ranger either.
