I know this isn't the LRRP's board but no one's ever on there. Just wondering how they pick people for the LRRp team's. Do they have like a selection course or anything for them?

I think this IS a LRP/LRRP board. Rangers have been lurping around a lot longer then they've been fast roping. Remember, the 75th designation came in the mid to late 60's. Up until right before I left, we still concentrated on woods work. Some might say we've gone too far the other way.

good point poly, LRP/LRRPs are a part of the Ranger lineage: Jan 31, 1969 all LRP & LRRP Companies were deactivated and Ranger Companies activated in there place, basically it was a title only change with the personnel pretty much remaining the same during the deactivation/activation period ( considering I pulled that off the top of my head maybe I do read too much http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/smile.gif )

You CAN'T read too much. Me too. Linderer, Miller, Ericsson and Rotundo. I've learned more from them, than any school i've been to. That was a 10+ year war, and they were there walking the walk. F/58th, The Old Foul Dudes, First Field Force and Charlie Rangers....Click your slippers Dorothy.

to mac, I was curious how many percent of the personnel of the Ranger companies in Vietnam were Ranger school graduates.
Thanks.

Mike,
I can't say for certain, and nothing I've read gives any indication of that but my guess would be not many. Several reasons for that, you had draftees that were filling the ranks ( not sure how many, if any, draftees were in the LRRPs ) so sending someone to Ranger School who's gonna be out real soon wouldn't be a great idea. Also these units were in South Vietnam for the most part and sending someone back to GA for Ranger School then back to a combat zone 5000 miles away would be kinda odd not to mention the fact that they were already getting OJT on Rangering. My guess would be that more LRRPs were MACV Recondo grads.
Poly,
one thing I'd love to see, a hardbound compilation edition of the Six Silent Men series.

That would be a great idea. I've got Linderer's compilation titled "Black Beret's and Painted Faces", which is a hard cover combination of his two paperbacks. Re: the Tab. No hard figures, but the one thing I do remember from somwhere, was that when a new guy showed up with one, the usual reaction was "Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzz". (Bumble Bee, get it)?

I believe the buzz comment was in Charlie Rangers.Iget the impression that not many of those guys had the Tab.

I seem to recall having read somewhere (someone in the know please correct me if I'm mistaken) that individuals who earn the CIC while serving in a Ranger unit are authorized the Tab. 'Nam era LRRPs (11-series types anyway) would have fallen into this category.

In such a case, that could well be known as getting Tabbed the hard way. Not that getting the Tab the usual way is anything to sneeze at either....

Another little tidbit for the benefit of any of those readers who aren't aware of it: did you know that Radio Operators (MOS: 31C 1984-present, 05B/C pre-1984) serving in combat as LRRP/LRSU Patrol members and as Ranger Platoon RATELOs do not receive the CIB?

I got to meet Don Ericson and John Rotundo one time in Columbus. Introduced by a friend who served with them in C Company. Great guys. Wild stories.

There was lengthy debate about whether or not Nam era LRRP/LRPs should be authorized the Rgr tab. This was covered in the patrolling newsletter from the Rgr Regiment Assoc.I believe Dept.of Army said no,go figure.
