Just curious about something I thought of a little while ago. For a soldier to get a combat infantry patch, do they actually have to be out there in the fight, or just deployed to the area? Like w/ TFR, in the book it said it was only Company B out there, but the whole Batallion deployed to Somalia, right? So would the whole batallion get a CIB or just the guys who were out there fighting? Just curious. thanks

The CIB is an individual award for participation in actual ground combat. To be eligible the individual must be an infantry officer (colonel or below) or an enlistedman or warrant officer with an infantry MOS assigned or attached to an infantry brigade, regiment, or smaller unit and engage in actual ground combat. After 3/1/61 US Army personnel assigned as advisors to Vietnamese, Thai, Korean (in the RVN), and CIDG infantry type units were made eligible if they partipated in actual ground combat with those units. Same was true for MTT(White Star) and MAAG-Laos if they came under hostile fire. Advisors from the 7th SFG were also made eligible for coming under hostile fire in El Salvador. I'm not up to speed on the more recent criteria changes. Second awards are not made for additional combat in the same war period. If a soldier was awarded the CIB in the Dom Rep 1965 he was not eligble a second award in Vietnam or vise versa

Hope this helps
