View Full Version : Good, Bad and the Ugly Jobs?

I'm prior service AF and heading into the ARMY at the end of August and I'm currently pulling teeth to get infantry. They want to give me 12B combat engineer or some cannon crewmember job. I see that these jobs are not needed in a Ranger unit, but how good or bad(any opinions) are these jobs if I must take one? And would I be able to cross-train over to infantry at any time down the road? Thanks in advance. JTB

That's interesting, the Army trying to talk someone OUT of the Infantry...

To answer your question: stick to your guns and go Infantry; because they damn-sure won't let you re-up for a different MOS. The option the unit re-up NCO will give you is current duty assignment, same MOS with different duty assignment, or discharged. Unless you go for SF; but the Ranger Regiment will give you better skills than Red Hats or Red Legs.

There was a 12B E-4 (corporal) in my basic that had re-upped for 11B/Rangers/HAAF. How he got that I have no idea. However, I would say demand infantry and go from there. Why do 4 years as something only to RE-UP for what you really want?

Oh, if you're trying to get ranger option as an 11X, I can understand the difficulty there. They aren't currently accepting 11B's and C's volunteering for RIP.

PS- 13F isn't a bad way to go to the 75th. From what I hear, you get a lot of schools, too. I think this subject has already been addressed somewhere on this board.

If they blow smoke up your @ss again, then get up and walk out of the career counselers office. I garantee you they will have an immediate change of heart, if not then, then two weeks from now they will. Remember, you call the bluff, and you are in charge of yourself, not them. Hell, I imagine if you held out long enough they would give you their daughter(J/K). They are hurting for joes right now. The college fund and enlistment bonus just jumped another ten grand!@!!

I only wish someone told me this when I first enlisted, I probably would have gotten a RIP contract, but instead a 11x leg contract w/o college fund or bonus.

Yeah, I was shocked to hear them try and talk me out of infantry myself.

Tracy, as for trying out for SF down the road, does it matter what MOS you have?

I was a 12B on active duty. I was "lucky", as my company was part of the (then) NATO AMF, so we had a lot of additional training.

Unless you are in the field, 12Bs get missions that other engineer units get, such as construction assignments/support. The best jobs are when combat teams are formed, with Infantry, Cav, Armor, Combat Engineers (12B).

Get an 11X slot and then when you are eligible, get over to the Sapper Leader Course.

Several men from my former company went over to the Ranger Batt. when we became part of the 3rd Brigade of 24th ID. 3rd and 24th did everything they could to prevent them from going over the hill.

Be careful about that bonus. A friend of mine was denied his bonus as it was for 11B. His contract lists 18B as his MOS.

Talked out of 11-series? Yes indeed folks, it does happen.

When I first joined the Guard (first thing I did on my 17th b-day was cut school and head to the Recruiting Office), I demanded a slot as an 11B with one of only two Airborne units in the entire State of Texas: Co. G (–)(Abn/Rgr), 143d Inf. (LRRP) — the other was the platoon-sized (now defunct) 1136th Pathfinder Detachment.

The recruiter tried to tell me that there was no way I'd be able to get into the unit I wanted ("Do you realize you'll have to go to Jump School?" — "I'm counting on it. I don't want to be a leg!"), and even tried to feed me some line about not being able to get a bonus for coming in as an 11-series, blah-blah-blah (not sure if there were bonuses for that MOS at the time or not; this was February 1981). This bozo actually tried to twist my arm into taking a 54E slot with some pogue Chemical company that he was trying to fill a quota for!

I held out and, with the help of a different recruiting NCO (a jump-qual'd ex-36th Abn. Bde. type), did get a slot with the unit I wanted, although it was in a different MOS: 05B (the pre-1984 version of today's 31C). I even managed to get a bonus along with it. Never being allowed to test for the EIB sucked (wrong PMOS!), but otherwise it worked out just fine.

Not when I was there Kobra. Wrong MOS. Things may have changed since then but I doubt it. If I had it to do over again I would probably try to go as a 13Fox.

According to the recruiting site, Yes they have slots for 97B. However, I would think there would be a very very limited amount.

Better late then never, I guess.

I gotta wonder: Why would you choose 13F (Forward Observer, no?) over 11B? I would think that if you're gonna be a Ranger you'd want to be an Infantryman?

No no no, Tack and Sharky are trying to trick you. Don't go in as a 13F, the F stands for Fairy. You really want to go to Regiment as a 91B (the B stands for Bad-ass Medic). That's what I did. Besides, it is widely known that medics get the most chicks, and that is all that counts in the end.

Bucky,

You may want to get "into the heat", but please refer to the below post (10th one down) and heed the advice inherent in the attrition figures in my (and others) post:
