I was talking to a recruiter and they said that you can only get a ranger contract if your infantry. I was wondering if this was true or just bs. I would like to get a ranger contract is a 91b. Any advice, suggestions, or comments would be apprecated.
Thank You

I thought the army was phasing out 91B'S replacing it with the 91W. In a year or so's time, all 91B's will be reclassed to 91W. The AMED web page had more info on it..

At last, someone who wants to be a medic!
Those recruiters are full of bs. I was a medic in the 1st Ranger Bn from '91-'95. Those dumbasses are confusing Ranger School with the 75th Ranger Regiment. Go back and ask them for a Ranger contract as a 91W, they do exist. Hell, not only do they exist, the Rangers are always needing more medics. Those recruiters need to get off their lazy asses and find out more about their job.
If the recruiters tell you that you can't get such a contract, tell them they don't know what the hell they are talking about and leave. Or better yet, ask to see their commanding officer and speak with him about it (you can do that, you're a civilian and have nothing to fear).
There is a 75th Ranger Reg't recruiting site on the Internet, I don't know what the address is, you can probably find it out from this site. That could be something you could use to educate the recruiters.
Being a Ranger medic is one of the best things you can do. After I got out of the Army, I had no trouble getting a job working in a civilian ER and my military experience definately helped me get into medical school later on.

Ted,
I am extremely interested in the SPECOPS Medic. I was wondering what their role in combat would be in a Ranger Battalion? In a combat situation do they just hang around until someone is injured or are they out fighting with the rest of the team? Does the same apply for SF? Do you know of any good resources where I could find some info about the medics?
Thanks
Joe
(I realize I should have posted this in the SPECOPS medic section, but traffic there is non-existent)

Exactly what Guy said. As the medic, you're an organic part of the unit, you have to be able to shoot, move, and communicate just like everyone else. You also have to be up on your medical skills. You will be a Ranger first and a medic second.

Go to 75thrangers.org and click around until you find the actual link to the Regimental recruiting site. Also, instead of pissing off a recruiter that you may later have to rely on, simply ask if they could continue to check on finding out more info and then go see DIFFERENT recruiter!

Joemac-
Read "Blackhawk Down"- the part about Kurt Schmidt and his actions in Mog are all about being an 18D (SF Medic).
An SF medic msut be able to shoot, move, communicate as well as perform at the MD/PA level if necessary...
And of course u have to be able to ruck- carrying the xtra batts for the commo guys, xtra demo for the Charlies, xtra claymores for the 18B's as well as all the paperwork for the LODs, water purification studies, camp sanitation equipment and if there is room your aidbag.....
It's the best job on the team.

do the Ranger Medics go through a more extensive medic program than the 91W or is it all the same?
Thanks again

Question. I noticed that the Ranger takes both 91B (now 91W, I guess) and 18D MOSes. I always assumed that the 18Ds were Ranger Medics who went toe the Special Operations Medic Course @ Bragg, but from what I read here, it seems like that isn't the case?
Are all 18Ds in the Army fully-qualified Special Forces troops (going through the full SF Q course) or do some go to just the Medic portion of the course (like the SEAL Corpsman seem to do?)

CMF 18 is Special Forces, and 18 series MOS's are awarded only on completion of SFQC
I believe SOMED is only a portion of the full 18D course ( which is 57 weeks I believe ). If I'm wrong someone here can give the correct numbers.
Hope it helps,
Mac

MOS 18D signifies a Special Operation Medical Sergeant; one who has completed both SOMED or as it used to be called 300F-1. This is an didactic oriented POI now at Bragg; previously at Ft. Sam Houston.
There are clinical skills portions here along with hospital and paramedic time. I believe when ones grads here they are eligible to sit for the National Registry exam for EMT-P(aramedic) exam.
SOMED is what Ranger, Force Recon, and SEAL guys go thru. Maybe also PJ's now-it's been awhile since I went thru...
SF candidates then go to the regular Phase training or "Q" course. The MOS producing Phase II is also at Bragg, involves live non-human patients, surgical procedures, CTM, and assorted lab, dental, vet and SpecOps medical subjects. Selected folks from other services, usually senior corpmen also attend part or all of this phase.
At the conclusion of this 2 month session SF candidates go to Ph.III at Bragg/McCall.
There is an OJT period after III, then on to SERE/language etc.
It gets kinda confusing with all the changes at SWC. Hope this helps.

We had some medics at Batt that went through the 300F-1. They said it was one hell of a good course.
