well I was supposed to ship Friday morning but my feet got in the way-I got eaten alive by chiggers in the Pine Barrens of NJ and from just the number and concentration of bites my feet and ankles did a lovely job imititating either a good sized orange or small grapefruit. and before anyone says anything, boots were too loud and heavy for what I was doing and you can't really blouse your pants inside your socks too well. the doc at MEPS didn't like that I was on prescription meds for the bites. to make a long story short, I've now got my original RGV4 contract back and ship out on Oct 19.

PS, they actually don't itch ( at least not anymore )

Being of fair-haired Irish genes, I was a magnet for chiggers while in BN.

Here are my three time-tested chigger treatments:

1. AFTER BEING BITTEN: Bleach. Fill a bathtub and add as much bleach (dilute with water to taste) as you can stand. Soak your feet. It will sting and dry the shit out of your skin, but it will indeed work. Note: if you get chiggers around your waist/LBE line and have to dunk your torso in the stuff, put a piece of tape on the end of your dick. Laugh all you want.....it works......

2. AFTER BEING BITTEN: Clear nail polish. Put little dabs of the stuff (get it from a ladyfriend if you have one) right on the bites. Let it dry in place. This will suffocate the little buggers and alleviate, but not eliminate, the itching.

3. BEFORE GOING TO THE FIELD: Eat matchheads. The MRE ones work just fine. I'd advise no more than a half a book every eight hours. The sulfur in matchheads will sweat out through your skin's pores and repels the little bastards.

This post will, no doubt, draw fire from those medically educated......

Tack
I cant laff-I did it myself and had teammates use the same home remedy....Shit hurt. JRTC was the absolute worst for the little bastards.
Now due to the miracle of modern medicine, there are commercial remedys that work well both pre and post exposure..Chig-away comes immediately to mind.
But the old M5 sickcall potions do work....

1. Treating BDUs with Permethin seemed to take care of most of critter problems. SOP prior to JRTC rotations and JCETs.

What in the world are chiggers?

Mrjdawg,

Chiggers are a type of mite. You usually find 'em in tall grass, woodland area's, weeds etc. And quite simply, they itch like HELL

Thankfully you'll only mainly see them in the glorious southern rim of the great U S of A.

Permalone, sulfer sock, and potent garlic pills seem to work for me. However, in some cases it goes against unit SOP to use bug juice in a tactical environment. (ya right http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/wink.gif )

Start taking garlic pills about three days in advance and no bug will be able to withstand the power of your firebreathing pores.

(I'm a little late posting due to a minor operation and brief hospital stay. I'm now back at the AO seeing how long it'll take the kids to rip the stitches open and send me back.)
