View Full Version : Qualifications
I've been reading everybody's messages about qualifying to be a Ranger. Do ASVAB scores count as well?
I don't know how the Army works, but I've been to BUD/S while in the Navy. And one of the qualifications for BUD/S is to have 104 points for the verbal assesment and arithmetic reasoning portion of the test.
Is this true for Rangers and Special Forces? I also heard that in order to qualify for Ranger school, an infantry man must complete one year with his battalion before going to training. Is that true?
Thanks for your help.
The various "high-speed/low-drag" assignments in the Army typically require an ASVAB GT score of 110 or better.
Mine was 143; same as my Regiment number, making it very easy to remember!

143?!??!?!?!? WOW, I thought GT scores maxed out at 130.
I've asked this question before, but maybe I'll get a different answer here: is there any correlation between IQ and GT score?
recce,
if I remember correctly GT score is just a composite score of the ASVAB categories and measures aptitude to learn/do things more than intelligence
my GT was 122, AFQT was 92
BTW LRRP, the GT requirement for SF is now 100

Keep in mind that I took the ASVAB back in 1981; max at that time was 160. No doubt that there's been a few changes since then! http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/biggrin.gif

I don't know for sure if there is a linear mathmatic relationship between GT and IQ....but I know my GT was 127 (tested in 1985) and my IQ is 144 (tested in 1982 and 1991 with identical results).
Hope this helps.

Now that (1) another thread has linked itself to this one on the GT score issue, and (2) I've re-entered the military since last I posted on this thread, I can comment that yes, there is a difference in the way the ASVAB is adiministered and scored now, as opposed to the way it was back in 1981.
Not sure whether the GT maxes out at 130 now (what I scored this last time, BTW), but here's how it works:
Standard Scores are tabulated in 11 different areas (GS, AR, WK, PC, NO, CS, AS, MK, MC, EI and VE) with a maximum of 70 in each one. This system is the same for each service.
When we get to the Composite Scores, each service does things differently, with each composite score being determined based upon two or more of the aforementioned standard scores.
For what little it's worth, here are mine as an example:
Standard Scores:
GS AR WK PC NO CS AS MK MC EI VE
68 66 61 62 58 64 67 63 70 70 62
Composite Scores (Army):
GT* GM* EL* CL* MM* SC* CO* FA* OF* ST*
130 140 138 130 140 138 142 138 135 136
AFQT Percentile Score: 98 (i.e.: top 2%)
One major difference between "then" and "now": with the computerized ASVAB, speed now weighs on how well one scores, in addition to accuracy. Actual content doesn't appear to have changed much.

Mr Slater...err Salter,
Great detail in your illustration, however the use of abbreviations renders the whole thing meaningless to us kids on the block.

I don't know nothing about no GT/IQ correlation. But you can get into the Regiment with less than a 110. You will get sent to BSEP (kinda like nite skool) and retake the ASVAB until you get at least a 110.
In fact, the ASVAB and the MCAT are the only two IQ-type tests I've ever taken. Got me a 125 GT score on the ASVAB and a 30 on the MCAT.

This projects a 13 point fluctuation over a
4 month period, indicating a 3.25 increase or
reduction within the above-mentioned time span. ??? ??? ???

...you should read the posts more carefully.
The numerically higher GT score on the first exam was in February 1981, whereas the latter was taken in August 2000. This is a time span of 19½ years, not four months.
As I've also pointed out, the scoring system has changed during that period, likewise the manner in which the test itself is administered.
Therefore, to compare the two scores is meaningless.

Profuse thanks, RE FACTOR, but I reckon it shows I haven't fried as many brain cells as I'd hoped for over the years.
I wonder if that counts as a mission failure....
