First off. Knots...learn the square and bowline. These will get you started.
Equalization starts at the waters syrface. Hold your nose and gently clear your ears. Every 1-2 feet do it again. You never want any discomfort. Don't blow too hard either. Ask questions when you do your mini BUD/S and you will do fine.

Before the dogpile starts why don't you explain "Mini-BUD/s".
It is a Midshipman (NROTC or Academy student) Special Warfare Orientation program. According to the Naval Spec War page it is a challenging 4-week training program that will test students mentally and physically. It is designed to give students who are interested in Spec War an insight into the NSW community and BUD/S training. The first 2 weeks are spent at the NSWC where students will experience different aspects of BUD/S training. The students will be in a BUD/S student status and will undergo IBS surf passage, conditioning runs, the O course, ocean swims, and small-arms weapons training. The last 2 weeks are spent with a SEAL team to see actual training and get to experience the daily workings of a SEAL team.
For anyone interested in one Midshipman's account of his experiences at a Mini-BUD/S see link:
The mini-BUD/S screener is offered to students at the Naval Academy. It takes place during one weekend and I believe it determines who, from the Academy, gets to go to mini-BUD/S.
I know about the holding your nose to equalize the pressure, but when drownproofing your hands are tied behind your back. Is there another way to equalize?

Try yawning with your mouth closed -- just strech the muscles you use to yawn, but don't open your mouth.
Splaying the back of the tongue and pressing the front 1/3 against the roof of the mouth also works for me.
With either of these, if I do it right I can hear a click when my eustacian tubes open. If I hold the stretch and breath through my nose I can feel a pressure change in my ears.

If your on the bottom during drownproofing your a clump and should not particpate. You never go deep enought to have to equalize. Your too busy trying to gulp air like a goldfish.
Yawning without opening your mouth? Gotta see that one.

Please explain why one would be a clump if on the bottom during drownproofing......you do have to touch the bottom of the pool, do you not?
How deep is the pool at mini-BUD/S? I had a recruiter, who went to BUD/S for a week or so tell me that it was 15 ft, maybe 20. In this case, I would need to equalize during drownproofing.

When drownproofing, you do a couple of bounces with your feet off the bottom. It is in the 9 foot section if memory serves me right. You don't have to equalize... unless you are only 2 feet tall... like the perfect woman.

You ever notice how some people just continue to do whatever inane task they were doing before the disaster struck or the bomb went off. It takes them a few seconds to realize that something truly horrible of a Biblical proportion has occurred and to respond to same same event. I noticed it in some of the 9/11 footage, when the towers went down. I've also seen it several times in person during car bombs and ambushes. I guess some people just react slower to that kind of thing. I wonder if its physiological....

I don't see exactly where I tried to educate anyone on leadership. In fact if you read close, I actually asked BOT to explain something to me, since I wasnt following him on why I was "not even a REAL fuckin Mid".
As for officer enlisted relations. Currently, I would say that most people reading this thread would expect me to be like the typical Academy puke who thinks his shit doesn't stink. But all I've really been trying to do is just defend myself against the guys who started talkin sh*t about a little comment, "9ft, 9ft is nothing".
I always thought drownproofing would be done deeper b.c a lot of public pools are 12 or 13 ft in the deep end. So, if you can drownproof in 13 ft, then 9 should be nothing.

FWI, the only time I ever thought I was going to drown was in 7' approx depth of water. 'Course I didn't have the advantage of being a Midshipman or having one nearby or anything cool like that.
There were some SEALs nearby, though. But after your setting me straight about shallow depths being easy and all, I'm glad I never really said anything to them about it......

Why don't you just cut the sh*t out about being a Midshipman.
Anyone could drown in .5ft of water, let alone 7ft, 9ft, or 13ft. I just think that drownproofing in 9ft would not be that difficult a task, not as difficult as 13ft may be.

ski,
The guy (Cherokee) that you tried to correct is a BUD/S grad assigned to... well, a NSW unit. He can say whatever he wants to about BUD/S.
My comments about leadership are a result of your comeback to B13 and the "suck to be enlisted" bit. It also sucks to be an O at times. I went to OCS with a guy that was tired of getting his hands dirty in the motor pool. Your posts remind me of his attitude. You may not think like it, but your words display a different meaning to those of us that have done things. You also remind me of the Officer Candidate that tried to lock up a SGM because the OC was going to be an O in a few days. He decided that his "respect" needed to be delivered. Respect is earned and perhaps you'll see that one day.
The OC got his commission, but was smoked like you wouldn't believe for that stunt. Sad thing is, the kid believed that the SGM should salute him.

Aaah! The anonymity of the internet. It has truly made us a society that communicates! Anyone feels free to say anything to anyone else at anytime about any subject. It is good that we feel free to communicate. However, there is a problem with this new anonymous communication - it is without accountability - which is a bad thing.
Now I don't know, but I would be willing to bet that you wouldn't say the same thing to Cherokee in say, a bar or a Navy Club, that you posted here. Why? Geographically Induced Consequences. What are GIC, you ask? Good question. The rule of GIC states that if you are geographically close enough for the object of your derision to lay his hands on you, there are consequences. GIC is not a cyber concept, it is real world. Example you say? Thought you would never ask.
Now, let's say you and your life partners are in a straight bar somewhere in Maryland. You've got your little midshipman bell bottoms on and you are getting ALL the attention. Cherokee is sitting at the bar, talking to a friend about BUD/S and all the experiences they shared. It is Cherokee's bar, he goes there everyday to talk to his friends for an hour or two. You interrupt the conversation and ask a question, a good one in your mind, about wait for it - not BUD/S but mini-BUD/S. A term with which Cherokee, by now mildly annoyed, is unfamiliar. You don't like his follow on responses, so you call him "little lady". There are immediate and significant GIC. Normally the GIC come in the form of BAM - Boot/Ass Meet.
Can you imagine yourself doing that? Probably not. Because of GIC, you would have, albeit subconsciously, conducted a mental cost-benefit analysis at the speed of light and come to the obvious conclusion that this man, sitting at the bar talking to his friend, is not one to be trifled with. The cost would be too horrible to contemplate. The benefit of your life partners thinking you are funny or cool is so miniscule as to not even register. Every cell in your being is screaming DO NOT FUCK WITH THIS MAN!
GIC is a survival mechanism, much on the order of the Fight/Fight syndrome that men such as Cherokee have*.
In summary, you can get away with statements on the internet with only verbal consequences to suffer. It is a much different matter in the real world. A true man would remember that and not abuse the anonymity and relative safety afforded him by the internet to call a man who is obviously his better a "little lady" in a vain attempt to show how witty he is.
I sincerely hope you enjoy your "Midshipman (NROTC or Academy student) Special Warfare Orientation program". While you are being oriented, it would behoove you to take a moment to remember that Cherokee, Cass, Frogstyle, Frog and the others do or did everyday, for a living, what you are being allowed to be oriented on. And, that you are likely getting Day 0, Hour 0, Minute 1 by a gentlemen's welcoming comittee of what the "little ladies" have endured for years. You fucking disrespectful Ass Clown College Boy wannabe.

I didn't post it for you to like it. Its a lesson. Don't like it, learn from it. The comment didn't "become" smart assed, it was smart assed the minute it came out of your mouth. You only said it because you knew you wouldn't have to suffer real consequences for it. If you still don't know why calling a Spec Op Warrior a "little lady" is wrong you are beyond hope. Your are disrespecting a warrior while you, by your own admission "don't know shit about active duty." You are going to "Special Warfare Orientation". He is a Special Warfare Warrior. Why do you think the Navy is taking the time and expense to send you to this orientation and teach you a little something about him and what he does? If the Navy, in its infinite wisdom, is going to all this trouble, don't you think you might want to show some respect? Who do you think will be conducting this orientation?

A lesson learned for you? Your critical failing was not the initial question, it was the "9 ft. is child's play" remark. I'll hazard that at BUD/S, it isn't child's play. You compounded your mistake by continuing with the smart comments.

Just that I have known my share of Navy enlisted - including one of my best friend from high school - and I know what they do to officers with jj1ski's apparent attitude.
Of course, that seems to be quite a few. My high school buddy told me one story where their ship (USS Thorne - this would have been early 1994) ran low on water and food for some reason. The showers were deemed off limits to sailors and and got they received smaller portions of food. As he tells the story - these restrictions did not apply to the brass. (the sailors thus made it a point to get a stinky as possible and always "real close" to the officers. As he tells the story, the Captain finally relented and let them shower after the bridge area go so smelly his officers were getting nauseous).
Now, I don't know if it was just the command environment of that one ship, or what, but when I told him I had never been in an Army unit where the officers wouldn't go hungry if there was not enough food - as the officers always made sure the troops were fed first - he was absolutely shocked. Apparently that kind of philosophy did not exist in the Navy - at least not as he experienced it. Likewise - if water was an issue - I could not imagine not giving shower priorities to those doing the most physical labor.

It is hard for me to imagine you before your Ninja days - as I am sure that now you need not fear a measly shark. Ninja fear no sharks or other living beasts.
The best Ninja wall-climbing boots are, after all, built from sharkskin collected by Ninja Scuba operators. As I understand it, the best boots come from sharks who are killed by swimming underneath and cutting off a chunk of leather while the shark is still alive. The other sharks that smell the blood and come to the AO are used for hand to teeth practice. This is a coveted Ninja training method.
Edited to add: I just realized this was in the SEAL forum. I apologize to you gilled types for stepping into your AO here - especially if I revealed any training methods in this post. This thread was getting too good too pass up.

jjtheknobpolisher,
You don't get it. Your antenna is simply not tuned to the frequency of those that make shit happen. After I left the Teams I met many speed bumps like you, consistantly throwing sand in the gears of progress. At least you have a function, you make us look good.
Some like to throw your kind a beating, I know it's wasted effort, because you'll never be in the circle.
Have the best day ever!
jake just thinking...
this must be what it feels like to stand behind a 106 recoilless when firing.
Sweet thread...thank you jj

jjlickmyass...
For a middie you sure have it all done huh. Your comments about enlisted will make for a GREAT work environment once you hit the haze gray underway world. You will fit right in. Since ALL of the work is done by enlisted you will have your hands full motivating them into a butterbar self satisfying fervor. In fact your senior enlisted will love to call you "sir". Wear a kapok 24/7 because you may find yourself drownproofing in 2000ft. of ocean.

Ha Ha Ha! DFC, your so right. And when he gets his first Fleet assignment after flopping out of BUDS they will assign him to a mid-deck Division. They won't let him in the 1st Division. Cause when they drop anchor he'll get his dick caught in the anchor chain and take a trip down the hawser pipe.

Sir,
Thanks for intel. I have a friend going to mini-BUD/S this summer from my school's NROTC unit. I'll tell him to stand out of the blast radius. I'd hate to see my Marine SNCO "motivation" go to waste if he gets in with the wrong crowd. He's going to be busy as it is from my understanding.
I never did like the uppity midshipmen that came to Pendleton, though they did help dust off the ass-chewing skills. "Excuse me, did you say I need to salute you? Really... STFB" :D
Beautiful thread. Simply beautiful.

I was not being a smartass or trying to talk sh*t. If cannibal goes to Northwestern and his friend is Dornsife, I was just telling him that because I will not be there when Dornsife will be there.

GIC? No. Cyber-consequences. I like GIC better, much more satisfying.
Where is this den of AC physically located?
Who trains those such as this? Is there no one who will answer for his behavior? "I, I alone am responsible for this AC!" "I have unleashed this paintchipper on the world!"
He's probably wondering why his rank doth have no priviledges. Can't FATHOM it (Navy term - I looked it up). Five pages and he comes on here trying to use an Operator to send secret coded messages to his life partner. "Left face!" "You're other left!" "The hand you don't write with!" "The hand you're not in love with!" "Oh, never mind, Right face"

Should have let him stick.....it just so happens that I go to the U of I in Urbana, and even though I am presently indisposed, I just so happen to know a 3rd Batt NCO/Afghan Vet who would be more than willing to pay this young man a visit. If one of you Admins have this young man's email addy, I'm sure I can at least make him feel like the idiot that he so obviously is. In fact, I may know this misguided individual. *shakes head*

I'm glad.
As a last little note, I sincerely hope you take this opportunity to adjust your attitude. Seeing as it is quite likely that you will end up somewhere in the Fleet, perhaps it's better that you did the genital tapdance here while there is still time to recover.
Maybe in your last year in NROTC you will learn a little more appreciation for enlisted side of the house. Actually being an officer won't mean shit if you don't realize your success depends on the success of the men under your command.
Remember, you can only expect courtesy and obedience (you won't get either now, middie), respect is earned.

Hey jj1ski just so you know, the enlisted guys can set POS boot LT's up to fail, and we do it. If a new 22 year old LT. comes into the FMF and a SSGT. or Gunny plt. sgt. with 18 years actually doing the job gives him advice (read tells him how to do it) the kid better listen. Believe me when I tell you us enlisted guys are VERY loyal to a good plt.sgt. You 23 year old kids think you know everything, it's amazing. You wouldn't be allowed to run the copying machine in the office by yourself in most places at that age. Your not even IN yet, and your talking shit. You've been dressed down by a ranking seal officer, and all the enlisted guys who have read this think your an idiot. I would say your off to a real good start in your military career if your attitude dosen't change.
Just trying to help man. I'm really not mad, because I know no matter what theres always gonna be that smart ass 2nd LT. out there.
Take it anyway you want it. Go easy...
p.s. OH and don't make me...........
