Push ups, sit-ups, and a 2 mile run.
Supposedly you need a minimum of 240 to try out to be a Ranger officer. But I'm betting that probably it is bullshit and you need a lot higher score. But I'm am just a student and have no direct knowledge of this topic except what can be found here:

This website has everything you could ever want to know about the APFT, enjoy.

The APFT consists of the following: Preliminary stretching as needed to ensure that participants are properly warmed up. This is for safety reasons as well as to ensure optimum performance. Maximum pushups in 2 minutes. Rest 10 minutes. Maximum situps in 2 minutes. Rest 10 minutes. 2-mile run. (end of test)
Now a word about the scoring system. A maximum of 100 points is credited for each event, with a total score of 300 being the official maximum score. Some units do follow varying protocols WRT recognizing performance over and above this limit, but such "extra credit" is not considered "official" as far as scores for record are concerned.
Entrance into the Ranger Course, Airborne School and the Long-Range Surveillance Leader Course requires a minimum score of 70% in each event, which means a soldier must achieve a score of 210 or better, IAW the 17-21 age group standards. This means: 52 pushups, 62 situps, and a 2-mile run in 14:54 or less.
As for 75th Regiment requirements, these are subject to being stricter (i.e.: possibly 80% or better [62/72/13:54]), however I'll leave that one for current/recent 75th members to confirm/deny. In either case, going balls-to-the-wall for all of the allowed time on the pushups and situps is highly desirable (doing these in a perfect quick-time cadence for the duration will yield 120 reps — it can be done, BTW!). Same deal with the run.
A good goal to set for yourself is to try pushing/sitting-up continuously for three minutes instead of two and to try to do them as quickly as you possibly can without deviating from correct form.
Also, spending two or three 30-minute sessions per week doing sprints (e.g.: 6 sets of sprint-30-seconds/slow-run-30-seconds, 10 sets of sprint-60-seconds/slow-run-60-seconds, and 8 sets of sprint-15-seconds/slow-run-15-seconds) will improve your 2-mile run time drastically.

I did something different--I would bangout 60-70 (pushups or situps) as quickly as possible, then do the remainder in sets of 10-20. I got 110-120 in both events, so I guess technique doesn't really matter as long as you crush yourself with regularity.
I would do approximately the same thing on the run--run really fast for as long as possible, and then keep going. I was able to get down to a 9:05 on the 1.5 mile. I knew guys who went from over 11 minutes to sub-9 minutes in 10 weeks...crazy.
