View Full Version : RIP, Seal, and RGT questions

My name is Shane Spurlock. I live in Montana and will be leaving in a month or so to Ft. Benning. I am a transfer from the national guard (yeah yeah, I know) and am getting RIP in my contract. My XO told me that he went through RIP and Ranger school as marine quite a few years ago, and he warned me that RIP was tougher than Ranger school. I am training myself, getting ready to go, and I should be set by the time february rolls around, but i was wondering if what he says is true and if anyone can expand on this???

My next question was about cross training. I have heard some rumors about Rangers going through BUD/S and seal training. Is there any truth to this? I originally found it hard to decide between the seals or Rangers, and since I know more about the Rangers and have so much respect for them and their heritage, that I chose to go that route, although if given the chance I would love to push myself through BUD/S if i could. Any help will be greatly appreciated, and any advice anyone can give me would be great too. Thanks

If he was a marine he never attended RIP. He may have attended Pre-Ranger before he went to Ranger school but not RIP. RIP and ROP are only for Army personnel who are trying to get into the regiment. As far as Army personnel going to BUD's etc... I have no idea, but it didn't happen when I was there and I've never heard of it happening although you aren't the first wannabe to pose the question. Maybe someone else can answer that one.

Any cross-service personnel attending BUD/S would only be attending the dive phase. They would not be qualified as "SEALs". They WOULD be qualified as Combat Divers. The only personnel I've heard of doing this is Pararescue/Combat Control and that is rare. Don't take what I'm saying as "the law", but I do know that only NAVY personnel attend the whole BUD/S course. That's right, no Marines, no "Delta" guys, no cross service, period.

thanks for your help, i was also wondering if you could give me an guidelines as far as where i should be physically. I realize alot of it has to do with mentality, but i would like to have a goal to reach for my run, pull-ups, sit ups, etc. thank you

GUY,

LOL! That's the spirit! http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/wink.gif

Shadow,

Sometime when you have lots of free time, go through the entire list of threads here and you will find enough to read for days.

The requirements are, as I believe:

52 pushups in under 2 minutes, 62 situps in under 2 minutes, and 6 pullups, palms towards the body. There is also required running times and marches(can't remember at moment). These are MINUMUMS, you should blow these away. If I had to bank on the most important, I'd say it is running and marching.

And don't forget, you have to be able to stay on the surface with your LCE, helmet, boots, and rifle without losing any of them.

Good luck,

Chris

SF had a "Liason NCO" at BUD/S to act as a conduit for training techniques and equipment related to the dive phase. He also provided information, training and doctrine advice for land-warfare issues as requested. The LNO was dive-qualified prior to arrival.

thanks to everyone that posted a response. I have been doing alot of running every day and i have been swimming wearing everything but Rifle and helmet. I am in good physical shape and am not worried about the pushups, situps or pullups, the only thing I really was unnerved about was my running/endurance. Again, thanks to everyone for helping out a future Ranger. I hope to be in Batt by summer '01, and all your help is greatly appreciated.

"I am a transfer from the national guard (yeah yeah, I know)...."

What is this supposed to infer?

Just curious.

mac679,

Im from montana all my life, i assume you ask me about my preference on the cold since i will br going to benning in the winter. Ive been watching and it hasnt seemed to get even into the 60's hardly down there. Maybe it gets colder than that down there, but its typically cooler than that in my house and outside right now is negative 11 F. I have heard however that ranger school in the winter there is no fun cause of the river crossing exercises, oh well, if it was fun everyone would have a tab right?

to rogue,

I was just talking about the fact that in plenty of these threads and in other discussions of this nature i have seen the national guard get flamed pretty hard, and alot of the time from what i see, the guard and reserves more flaming han they get. My point was only to pass on that yes I understand I am not active yet and that puts me behind the curve, that way to maybe eliminate too much harassment from guys posting remarks. Thats all.

I'd love it if it were in the 60's. I'm on leave from OSUT as we speak, and trust me, it might not get Montana cold but there's mornings where I want more than a field jacket and liner... http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/wink.gif

oh so youre just now going through basic and all that, thats cool. where you going after that. I already did basic, but it was over 3 years ago and since im going into a combat arms MOS, i have to redo it anyway. OH well, i was kinda hoping i would do it over so i have more time to prepare myself for rip. How cold has it been down there lately, I can handle down to about 20 degrees with no field jacket for awhile, but ill tell you, very long or much colder and im searching for more clothes. If it would stay about 55 or 60 degrees, i think most people here would be happy. You going airborne or RIP?? email me at shadow74ss@aol.com if you wanna chat so these guys dont have to listen to our B.S.
