GMC Ronald Hetzel and CTM1 William Zimmerman of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 11 returned from a 45-day deployment in support of the 73rd Joint Task Force Full Accounting Mission (JTF-FA) in the Peoples Republic of Vietnam on May 29.
Hetzel and Zimmerman provided EOD support to identify and render safe unexploded ordnance discovered at four crash sites. During recovery operations, they identified and marked for future disposal 81 pieces of ordnance including two MK-82 bombs with point detonating fuses and 76-mm Tank rounds and mortars.
When not engaged in identifying hazardous ordnance, they took part in the excavation and recovery of personal items and remains of U.S. servicemen. All items recovered were forwarded to the Central Identification Laboratory in Oahu, Hawaii for identification and disposition.
The mission of JTF-FA is to achieve the fullest possible accounting of Americans still missing and unaccounted for as a result of the war in Southeast Asia. Both Hetzel and Zimmerman said they were honored to participate in the ongoing effort to repatriate those American Soldiers lost during the Vietnam conflict.
