Justagrunt,
What you just described is accually very common. My LRS unit has quite a few spec-4s who took administrative knock downs just to get in the unit. We even have an NCO who used to be a company commander at one time http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/eek.gif
The reason behind their policy is because they are trying to avoid from being "top heavy". A LRS detachment is about a platoon plus in size. They also reserve the right to turn recruits down because of that.
Once you start training(if you decide to change your mind) with them you probably see that LRS is NOTHING like the regular infantry. Especially when you are on your isolation portion of the mission. I felt like I was cherry all over again when I made the transition. Another good reason behind their policy.

And as for not makeing my rank in that amount of time in the Corp. Well that might be why I ain't in the Corp...(No offence to any of my Marine Infantry Brothers)
As for doing things for "the Job, not the Badge" Well If it aint obviouse that I'm not "Badge Hunting" I don't know what is. If I wanted all the Badges I could get I would went to that unit and got them... It was never about no Fucking Patches...
And as for "Who Cares"... Well I do. And you obviousely don't, SO DON'T FUCKING POST ABOUT IT IF YOU DON'T CARE!
All I want to be is the Best Fucking Light Infantry Soldier I Can Be without screwing myself in the process. IF you can't figure that out than I don't know what else to tell you but to keep your pie eating fingers of that computer unless you've got something helpful to share... Be apart of the solution, not a part of the problem. Your opinion is like an asswhole... Not because everyone has one, but because it stinks like shit!

To start that was not a POP shot.. If it was, it would have taken off your head.
To quote you
"And as for "Who Cares"... Well I do. And you obviously don't, SO DON'T FUCKING
POST ABOUT IT IF YOU DON'T CARE!"
WellI do care and if you would of cared in the 1st place you would have DONE IT RIGHT THE 1st time. As I did, and many more on this board. That is why I choose the MARINES!!!!(AND YOU ARE NOT A FELLOW MARINE BROTHER... Infantry YES MARINE NO!!!POP SHOT)
As far as being STINKY.. You are the one with SHIT NO YOUR FACE. NOT ME.
Every time I got invited to join a unit, I took the INDOC or selection right then. I never went home and had to SLEEP ON it.... STUDS go for it.. You have to sell out... Let it be rank, family, school... If you want to be the BEST. No one every got GREAT by backing down and sleeping on it to make the best decision for themselves.
I'll put it this way. I don't know if you are a sports fan or not. Maurice Green is a great story. Fastest man in the world. GOLD MEDAL winner which I know you are far from
being (That too was a pop shot)He worked in a fast food restaurant flipping burgers. Here
is the fastest man in the world running on a dirt track so he can make it to the Olympics.
I'm sure he went home and thought to himself... I know I'm fast, but I'm making a lot of rank on the server line. Maybe I should give up on being the best so I can be in good shape for the future.
To me you look like a fucking WIENER. NUT UP and go for it. I understand where you
are coming from. In the Corps we have a lot of Senior Marines who would not come to
Recon because a E-3 would know more than they.. But a lot of the e-3's were prior service. I feel we missed a lot of great NCO
leadership because they would not go for it...Because they felt comfortable where they
were in their career. Don't let ego over ride your path to greatness. If you are going to be the best DO IT...
AS WILD BILL SAID: IF YOU ARE THAT GOOD THE RANK WILL COME BACK.
Good luck.

O' and by the way. I looked at all the branches when I CHOSE the Army... I didn't pick one over the other becuase they have cool fucking comercials and a pretty uniform... I picked the one that had the job I wanted. I joined as a Combat Medic and later reclassed Infantry. Last time I check a The marines don't offer that job. (Combat Medic)

The Corps has Corpsmen...Which I konw you know. They can go with Field Med 18D with the Marines or SEALS....
Again, Why did you not go for LSRC or RTB the 1st time.
I'm not trying to pick a fight HARD CHARGER.

My opinions are my opinions. I gave you my thoughts.. If you don't want to hear the truth get off the board.
E19, LSRC, RANGER HAZEN, SHARKY, and myself have all given our opinions. You just listen the ones you like. To me that sounds like the easy way out. If a unit like the one you mentioned invited me...I damm well would have been there... No need for options or opinions. I would have just done it. But I'm not you and you sure are not ME.

Go for it don't worry about rank. Unless it is your main income and you have mouths to feed. If it is just you... GO FOR IT... The service needs people who are deicated. Like I said I saw too many lifers pass up an opportunity of a life time... I got very lucky...I got to do it the 1st time in the Corps. I do miss the service because of MEN like you. I had mouths to feed... I could not do it on the pay..Now I have a little in the bank... I wish I could go back in time with the money I have now... I would have retired.
This all depends on what you want to do. No one else can do it for you. I sure as hell am not going to run an indoc anytime soon.
If it was me, I would do it. Screw everything else. I wanted to be the best nothig else mattered.

(Currently an Infantry instructor at Indiana Military Academy, Camp Atterbury for reclass of prior service that have now decided to become a "Real Soldier" as I put it...)
Well, Damn!, justagrunt, don't sugarcoat things.... I'm sure there are legions of PMOS 31C types and the odd 91B who've paid their dues in the LRSUs who'd consider it a real revelation to have your valuable self there to clue them in on the fact that they're not "real soldiers". Try telling all those non-11s SFOD-D has for shooters, or all those 18's-other-than-18B that they're not "real soldiers".
While I presume you were making a joke with that remark, in the event you were to seriously put forth the expressed idea in the presence of any of the aforementioned, my advice would be as follows: "Grab your ass and hang on!".
FACT: When I started out in the 1980's, we fielded 5-man LRRP Teams. Of those five, two were PMOS 05B (FYI: this was 05C minus radioteletype tasks. 05B/C were consolidated into MOS 31C during FY 1984). To put it another way, 40% of a LRRP Team were non-11's. Further, 05B's not only served on LRRP Teams, but often led LRRP Teams. In the LRSUs of today (Clinton-era, no-longer-SOF — this pretty much explains it all), this situation has changed, however I suspect this is due fully to the influence of Clinton's Dickless Pencilnecks — with their "let's-all-be-pogues" mentality — getting their butt-plugs skewed the wrong way over the thought of expensively school-trained technicians actually soldiering out there on the "sharp end".
Besides what I look like with specialis rank and a damn Drill Sergeant badge???
Like someone who was motivated enough to be in a highly select unit to be willing to take a reduction in grade to be there.
Not everyone has to take a reduction; I didn't. In my case, I previously left the military as an E-5 with 10½ years service (4 TXARNG, the rest AF. Most of it as an NCO, all of it spanning the entirety of the Reagan-Bush Era), followed by a 9½-year break in service, and still came back as an E-5. For what it's worth, I had spent my first four years of service in the very same unit. Had I been an E-6, I very likely would have had to take off a stripe, and would not have minded doing so. Short version: (Q) Would I have been willing to take a reduction to come back? (A) YES.

Purdy couldn't even SPELL tact. My god, he wanted to shoot us in the leg before our last 12-miler in RIP. Some of you may want to hoist the bullshit flag on that one but it is true, can be verified, and was supposedly one of the reasons he was never assigned anything over battalion level. Poly, were you on the jump with us when purd broke his ankle in 91? There's a story. Too long for this board though. Salter, Cool your jet's Turbo!!! Let me those questions of my post up a little for you.
First off, I don't think that Infantry types are the only "Real Soldiers" The MOS that you listed 31C and 91B I hold in high regard... I joined the Army as a Combat Medic when I first came in. (No one is tuffer than DOC!) and My father-in-law was 31C with 35th SIG. Airborne 82-85 Ft. Bragg / (Grenada)Definetly a HooAH Airborne type. My brother is joining an LRS unit soon as a 31C. He is a non-prior. He will be signing up in DEC.
I referd to all those "Soldiers" as becomeing "Real Soldiers" do to the prodoment amount of fucking REMF's we get... I/E Addmin, Cook, and a whole bunch of other crap.
As far as my reduction if I transfer to that unit, it is for two reasons that neither one are reasons that I could disagree with: 1) The highest ranking slot they have open is
E-4. and 2) I'm not jump qualed or LRSL qualed and they can't put me in a leaders slot when I am not Qualified to lead. I am a damn good Non-Com. I/E Drill Sgt., Infantry Squadleader, Platoon Sgt., Instructor... But that is a whole new ball game (That Mission) So I completely agree with their reasoning, I just had a hard time, myself with doing it.
I'm going to finish this assignment (11BH). I have 2 more years with it and then I will probably go crawling back to them... I'll be E-7 then, but who cares. I hope that clears shit up for you a little.

justagrunt, not hard to do. Don't overestimate the value of that rank. Let's be frank...in most cases if you do your job and maintain a decent reputation the promotions will come. I'm not saying that there isn't hard work involved but there are much harder things to accomplish than an E-6 rank in 8yrs. If being a Ranger is what you want than go for it. Don't be afraid to humble yourself and start over. Your 28, I'm 26 and we both have nice long careers ahead of us. Currently I am working on going back to active duty. I've finished college and have spent 4 years eliminating about 3/4 of my debt. The wife is all for it and I'm jumping out of my skin from excitement. I have very little desire to become an officer so guess what? Automatic reduction in rank - 2 grades in fact. It doesn't matter a hill of beans to me as long as I can attach "U.S. Army ret." behind my name in another 15years.

Justagrunt, Little clue for you! Get thicker skin! Breaking out the "I know you are, but what am I" Defense is pretty questionable in this forum, as it is obviously filled with well read, literate, educated, professionals... The only ability that I questioned was your spelling... (Some of my best Studs have been academic bricks, but at least they had confidence in themselves, which you seem to lack)... But as long as we're taking "Pop Shots" at each other...
Immaturity... Of this you have plenty... I hope you act more professional while shaping future leaders, but somehow I doubt it.
Respect... Of this you have none... You ask a question in a forum of Professionals... Don't like the responses you get, so you roll in with Chaff and Flare... Not impressive!
Talent... I'm not sure where you stand on this issue. You tell us "How Great You Are, yet show a lack of "basic" academic ability. You can't make it thru Ranger (Or any school for that matter) if you can't do the math on the declination diagram... (Hope I didn't lose you there)
Let me set something straight for you... I have all the respect in the world for young, hard charging NCOs, who want to better themselves... But I always advise them to start with academics, and build upon that... If you brief the "6" in a "Hillbilly" fashion (My apologies to any mountain folk out there) you won't be taken seriously... The same can be said for posting to this forum... If you write like a third grader... well you know where I'm going with this. Anyhow, good luck in whatever you decide to do...
BTW... (really fast would have been more grammatically correct. Quickly would have been even better... Because not becuase...Yall right?... I'm not sure on that one... Don't want to got to...
I'd give you a C+ on this post... which shows improvement over the previous 10...

I'll address everyone of your points...
1)My skin is thick enough... But when someone calls you a "Bastard"... Let's Go!
2) As far as you "only questioning my spelling" Quote: "Accomplishments that would only impress the most mediocre of troops." Be a little consistent, would you?
3)You obviously are a terrible read of people... You say I have little confidence, Yet I have the balls to come on a forum like this which I will openly concede that I am at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to "Hooah" experience to go to the source for advice... My advise to you is try a little humility. You would think considering the situation that I would be an easy target but I don't take shit from anyone...regardless of qualifications, your still a man, just a man...
4)IMMATURITY... Your the one that took a sucker punch on a guy by calling him a "Bastard" when he was mature enough to ask a group that is the subject matter experts for advice... Go figure!
5) RESPECT... I can't even beleive you have the nerve to stand and speek of respect!!! This is like Al Gore saying every vote should count after negating the military over-seas vote's... You called me a Bastard, an Asshole and you question my inegrity. Your right! I don't have any fucking respect for you, for obvious reasons... Your a Prick that has no respect for anyone else. You'll probably say: "I respect all the other professionals on this board, but you don't... You respect what they have done only because you have done it yourself, if you hadn't.. You wouldn't give a rat's ass about them. That's disrespect in my book. Respect is earned, not given...Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla...
6) TALENT... Everyone has diferent talents, (Mine is obviously not spelling, for which I will admit.) I never claimed to be "great" I listed my credentials so to give anyone that wanted to give me advise on the matter the "whole picture" I don't compare what I have done to anyone... I'm proud that I can still make time in my very busy life to serve my country. And honestly... FUCK talent! everyone is born with some talent to do something, but it is the man that developes the skill to do the things that he isn't born to do is the measure of a man's worth. I was born with Dysgraphia, wich is a form of dislexia... I have trouble spelling... so be it. I also have an IQ of 147 which got my "illiterate" (as you put it) ass through college and put me in a possition to make six figures a year, which I never fail to do...(If I was to ever brag, there it was. I guess you bring out the worst in me.)
7) ACADEMICS... Read #6 again.
I think I have wasted enough of everyones time on this crap... I hope it was at least amusing!

Balls and the internet are two concepts that don't often collide. You think this shows guts and defines you as a person to come on here and ask a question?
Stand up at a NARAL meeting and start reading from a Bible, go to a gay convention, stand up on the podium, and start talking about how much you're in favor of stricter sodomy laws. Take a reduction in grade from e-6 to e-4 to join an LRSU. Those things take balls (maybe not the last one, since you say you make 6 figures). Posting on here does not.
justagrunt
5 December 2000, 10:45
Whatever... http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/rolleyes.gif You have obviously missed my point. My point was: In reference to "having balls" is that I understand and admit to my "inperfections" You are right that it doesn't take balls to pop off at the mouth on the net... as so many people have proven here...Thats what started this flame war in the first place.
I ASKED A SIMPLE QUESTION... I've gotten some real profetional answers and I've gotten some egotistical jackass answers from other guys who just want to enact their self-believed possition of superiority on someone that has let their guard down to compensate for the fact that they real life may not be what they hoped it would be... I'm very happy with my life's accomplishments thus far... This whole conversation was started about me simply asking advise about my future, with regards to possible endeavors, so to continue on with bettering myself.
"If your not moving forward...Your moving back, because the next guy is passing you up. There is no middle ground in the journey of life."
"A smart man learns from his mistakes... A genius learns from someone elses..."
"You may be on the right track... But if you just sit there you'll get your ass run over"
Food for thought...

On that note, I would like to welcome myself to this forum. Thank you, gentlemen, you may be seated.
FEMALE ON DECK!!!
Now, justadud, let me have my way with you :-)
Your dysgraphia, dislexia, diarrhea, and apparent dysplasia of brain matter poses several questions. Asking, however, won't make much sense since I do not believe that your answers to my questions would travel on the same frequency.
So, I shall leave you with an opinion: Once you find that foot which you so conveniently logged deeply in your esophagus, you might want to use the scroll button and assess the damage from afar.
I, for one, am one of those pogue MOS's. In real life (since all I am doing is "pop shooting" and hiding behind my screen, scared your testosterone might push me off my chair) your silly attempts of requesting actions via 4187 would hit deaf ears (and lame fingers on the keyboard), for I do not grace any email traffic (or 4187's) with an answer or follow up action if received with such lack of care on basic English.
English is my 3d language, justadud, what is your first?
Now lastly, if you write like a moron, you probably speak like a moron, what does that make you in the long run?
Just wondering.

Is being an infantry instructor at an infantry school(Army or Marine Corps) the same as a military academy? Is it high schoolers?

Joe,
It is called a military academy because it was, at first only OCS. It has all of the NCO schools, Instructor cources, and Infantry reclass for prior service soldiers (Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force) that are comeing into the Guard and Reserve and option to change there MOS to Infantry (11B). As a matter of fact... One of my fellow instructors is a former Marine. He realy knows his Infantry tactics. He was a sniper in the Corps. and also did time as a D.I.
I hope that answers your question.

I think I recall you getting into it with others but if I'm wrong on that, so be it...no big deal.
Actually other than this AG Turd/Freak, that High School Drop out Fag, and you are the only one I have realy mixed it up with. (unless you count YTDevil but that was in the middle of our disagreement...) I , like you was planning to chill-out after that one board was closed, (It got out of hand on both our parts) and that is still my plan except I've got this AG Freak starting shit with me... O' well. I realy don't have any desire whatsoever to get into it with anyone on this board but, if someone takes a shot at me...
If someone dosn't take me at face value that is on them... I haven't claimed to be anything than what I truely am (on this board.) My opinions are just that, opinions. "Take'em or Leave'em"
I think we need to agree to let this subject go or it will probably just get nasty again...
Likewise, Just a heads-up, I have no issues with you either...

AG;
Is it OK for JAG to be happy about going where he want's to go in life? Is it reaonable to assume that he has chosen to do just that because in his admittedly arbitrary oppinion it seems to be the more beneficial option in comparison to any other available in his current situation? Is it therefore logical for him to regard anyone doing anyhing else as either being not quite right or slightly inferior in relation to his own standards?
I think so.
Does this mean you need to be offended?
No, it doesn't. Because it is a personal oppinion, however shared by any number of people. Neither JAG nor anybody else has ever claimed it to be a scientific fact and I'm quite sure that you feel much the same way about your own decisions and values, or you would most definitely have chosen to act differently and reassess your views, wouldn't you?
So: Who are you to rain on his parade?

I have succeeded in many differet fields in my life. Military is just one of them. One thing that reinforces that this is true is the fact that I have so many people such as yourselves that I inspire to post all these derogatory comments in my direction...
