View Full Version : Unarmed Combat Training
I was reading some magazines the other day (Soldier of Fortune and Karate Illustrated) and ran across 5 or 6 people claiming to teach "the official unarmed combat system of the Navy SEALs" or something along those lines. Perhaps somebody could enlighten me as to who it is that really teaches you guys unarmed combat. Thanx.

Nick,
I am not a SEAL (nor have I ever
claimed to be http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/smile.gif ), but I believe
the reason that those trainers claim
to teach SEALs is because SEALs go to schools, seminars and teachers all
over the place and bring home what
knowledge they can. Also, SEALs
recieve seminars from instructors
like Paul Vunak.

Go here www.tridentacademy.org (http://www.tridentacademy.org) the head instructor, Pat Tray, is a retiring SEAL. He opened this school up for when he retires soon. He was a hand to hand instructor in the Teams for a while. He also trained with Vunak.
You probably saw ads for SCARS by Jerry Peterson. Peterson is always advertising in Martial Arts magazines and stuff that his system was adopted by the Navy SEALs. Pat doesn't think much of that system from what I've gathered.
If your ever in the Virginia area I recommend stopping by his studio. He's a really cool guy and he's got pictures all over the wall of himself and Teammates in Grenada, Panama, and Somalia.

Funny...when I was a SCARS train-up we had a 4 year student of Vunak there who gave it up after watching Peterson's tapes...he was thoroughly satisfied for the amount of knowledge gained in such a small amount of time SCARS takes to become profecient in.
People knock SCARS all the time, but it is always funny to see there credentials and he flood of people trying to get into thier $1500+ 3-4 day seminars.
I live in southeastern Virginia. Is this place in Little Creek?
I have seen something advertised on the internet:SAFTA fighting system.
Is this any good and is it the "official system taught to SEALs" ???
