View Full Version : CRT? What?
I just watched GI Jane recently...no, i'm not posting any opinions right now.
I do have a question though: Supposedly they were all enrolled in a CRT (Combined Reconnaissance Training) program with Force Recon and "Army Delta" operators. I've never heard of this before. Is this a load of you-know-what? pure fabrication? or does it have basis in reality?

The idea of a "CRT" was as far-fetched as the premise for the whole movie. The only real thing it refers to is "Cathode Ray Tube".
lol @ cathode ray tube... =)
i agree the movie was quite far-fetched, but i wanted to make sure with the CRT thing - thought i'd ask here.
i have to admit though that the gear looked pretty authentic. One big gripe though - why were the Rangers wearing black in the desert? They must have had a penchant for overheating...

The Rangers are wearing black because they had made a night insertion earlier to recover the fallen satellite.

As I understand it, wearing black at night doesnt do any good in the desert because it creates a silouhete (cant spell). Wouldnt it have been better if they had been wearing regular desert camo?

They were probably wearing all black because like most things in the movie...it made em look cool...The Gear is the easiest to make look authentic because alas..its avaiable quite readily and all ya gotta do is look at pictures and set it up the same way...for the wearing of camo yes they would have been better off in Desert cammies..then again I've also heard that for moving up on the beach wearing white is better then black or camo because it blends better and doesn't leave a silouette like the black or camo would...then again the Desert would probably blend easily...The Rangers(probably shoulda been a SF detachment not Rangers) were probably pushing their luck too with moving like they were during the day...they should have been moving at night...it woulda provided better cover and concealment then moving in the middle of the day...but then again if we were to sit here and point out everything wrong with the movie we'd never get off the computer...

Remark and Question:
You could say that the sattelite had to be extracted quickly, for maybe, its homing device ( ? ) could be traced in time by Libyan forces. Now if a Ranger squad would be very near, and other SpecOps not, wouldn't it be possible that the Rangers got the job?
The thing I didn't get at the end : why didn't they use a helicopter to extract the Ranger squad. Maybe they could have waited until nightfall ( with any radio beacon coming from the satellite switched off of course ). Or wait maybe I do get it : that last plan would be too simple to make a good movie ending http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/smile.gif

p.s. I know it's a pretty pointless discussion, but I really felt like posting and this thread is pretty harmless []-]
OK Well how often do you see Rangers off in just a squad? I've never heard of any Ranger Team being smaller then a platoon and even then it was small...the Rangers are normally a large assult group...so that is what would make the Rangers a bad unit to use for that situation (not that the Rangers aren't a good unit)...the more likely choice would be a SF team...as for the beacon..I dunno could be..
