I've heard mixed reviews about this reg/2nd stage. I've heard that this reg is just a total piece of crap, not even worth touching. I have also heard that its a pretty good reg, especially for those that get dry mouth while diving. I get pretty wicked dry mouth while diving and I was considering this reg. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

It's not bad. Nice inexpensive Reg. Shop I worked at in Denver, we used those Regs for our students (Pool and Open Water certs.). So they were put through the paces quit a bit. But it was nice having the repair shop right there. Yes they did go tits up sometimes, but again.....not bad for an inexpensive Reg.
As far as the "dry mouth" thing goes. You'll get dry mouth using any type of Reg. There is no one Reg. that prevents it. Whenever I get dry mouth, I just take my 2nd stage out of my mouth, pull in a little water, swish it around , then spit it out, then put my 2nd stage back in and off I go. I do this in both fresh and salt water.....not the pool though. I ALWAYS had a water bottle at the edge.

Sherwood are nomally a sevice techs wetdream. Simple design minimun parts and cheap service kits.... HOWEVER... Look carefully at the details before hand, Maybe it has changed but back in 2000 they were not rated for Deep water. I knew of multiple reports of malfuntions below 95-100 ft rangeing from drasticly reduced airflow to freeflow.
FWIW, Sherwod handle the drymouth part by means of a goldplated/brss set of vane's in the 2nd stage which act as a heat exchange from the exhaled breath. Its a nice feature but I wouldnt base the puchase of such an imported piece of kit on that.
I dived Poseidon for years they are pricey both nice, however you need to make sure the service tech REALLY knows his sh*t as they need to be tuned to perfection.
I good midground I would reccomend would be Scubapro or Zeagle
