This pic from a buddy in the 'stan.

He says they had 17,000 pound of explosive packed into the cave - the detonation actually altered the face of the mountain.

Just though I'd share.

Not 17,000 lbs of explosive, 17,000 lbs of ammo, plus a very nice line of M-112 charge blocks across the top.

What wasn't blown was darn sure buried.

FYI, SF Demo Committee used to shoot over 60,000 lbs. of demo and chemicals per year in training.

Reaper,
EOD bases everything off a TNT equivalency factor. Weight of the munition has nothing to do with it. Propellants, fuels, other explosives all have this, whether it's .25 or 1.5(hense NEW). We figure it this way so we can calculate an accurate bast and frag distance.

Got that, used to work at the schoolhouse, not to quibble, but the quote was "17,000 pound(s) of explosive", NOT "17,000 lbs. NEW of munitions", NOT "17,000 lbs. of TNT equivalent", etc. I know Adam, and was pulling his proverbial student leg.

Can we discuss the Miznay-Chardin effect now, whether the Re of 20 year old lot Comp C-4 is actually 1.34, or if it degrades with time, or is it really just time for a cold one?

Gentlemen:

FWIW, the picture came to me desribed as 17,000 pounds NEW. I used the same term for my message header. As it was from a guy who has been doing EOD since I was playing Air Defender - I have to assume he meant what he said.

Perhaps I chose a poor choice of words for translating in an attempt to reach a broader audience.

My only dealing with NEW calculations have been in quantity-distance calculations in the classroom. I am, after all, a maintenance officer primarily.

EOD school starts in December. Reaper, maybe in a year I will know what the hell you just said, sir!

FWIW, my bias leans towards your last suggestion.

Come to Bragg Range 69, grasshopper, and we will show you some stuff!

MSD? We don't need no MSD (running like hell for the bunker).

Here's a "money" shot for you, it's one that a USMC EOD sent in. Can't top your 17k pounds, but it's a start.

A major cave network containing a huge arms cache was discovered in the area of operations, and carefully investigated. Weapons and munitions discovered included over 100 mortars of various calibres, over 100 recoilless anti-tank guns, several hundred rocket-propelled grenades, 200 anti-personnel mines, hundreds of artillery rounds and rockets, and many thousands of small-arms and light anti-aircraft ammunition. Demolition charges were then emplaced and the entire complex destroyed, putting the arms dump permanently out of commission.

Since this post resurfaced, I read up a few posts for nostalgia's sake - and I'll be damned - I actually know what the Reaper was talking about now!

The course changed a bit a few years back - Phase I is now at Redstone. They claim the academic washout rate at Eglin is now like only 2-3% (compared to 25-35% before). It doesn't surprise me, 'cuz this course is a smoker. We've already lost three students since Christmas Exodus!
